Reading Response 2: the child Olaudah Equiano becoming the man slave Gustavas Vasa.
Olaudah Equiano was a righteous man who was stolen from his home as a child, and made into a slave. Through Equiano’s time as a slave he endured many hardships and made many friends who he would never see again due to death, or the slave trade. Equiano made a memoir to show readers what it was like to be a slave, and to show his hardship through his own eyes without showing himself as someone who is looking for compassion or compensation of any kind. I believe Equiano just had a story to tell to let out all of the misery, and chaos he had held in for many years. This reading response is focused on Equiano’s transition from having a normal life to becoming a slave.
Olaudah Equiano was born in Essaka in 1745 in Nigeria. Equiano’s father was a chief in his village, so the life of Equiano as a kid was comforting and satisfying. The slave trade in Guinea spread all through Nigeria’s coast. Equiano said “that part of Africa, known by the name of Guinea, to which the trade for slaves is carried on, extends along the coast above 3400 miles, from Senegal to Angola, and includes a variety of kingdoms”. (Equiano, p.356) Due to the high frequency of slave trade around Equiano’s village, while the adults would tend to their crops, instead of playing games Equiano and other children would keep watch for men who would sneak into their village and kidnap children for the slave trade.
