The Road to the Revolution began in 1754 when the French were fighting the British over the Ohio River Valley. This war was known as the French and Indian War. It ended in 1763 with Britain being the victors claiming most of the French’s land including the Ohio River Valley. Some of us colonists went to settle west of the Appalachian Mountains and force out the Natives. By doing this, it caused a war called Pontiac’s War. It started in 1763 and ended in 1764 with the British being the victors again. To avoid further wars with the Natives, the British government created the Proclamation of 1763 which banned colonial settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains. These laws were so harsh that the colonists called them the Intolerable Acts. Within this act it stated, the Boston harbor will be closed, the Quartering Act will be strengthened, there will be limited representative governments, and the Royal Governor’s power will increase. The British Government was outraged at what happened at the Boston Tea Party so they called for tough action to make an example of the people of Massachusetts. The colonies reacted by trying the help the colonists in Massachusetts. They donated food and other supplies to the people of Massachusetts. The colonists wanted to stop these acts so the Committee of Correspondence organized a meeting to discuss what to do next. That meeting was known as the First Continental Congress. It took place in September and October of 1774 in Philadelphia. 12 of the 13 colonies sent delegates to the meeting, Georgia was the only one to not send a delegate. The delegates demanded a repeal of the Intolerable Acts, and that the colonies had a right to tax and govern themselves.
