Introduction
Imagine if you had to come to school with the same clothes every day. Your hair not combed, teeth not brushed, and you haven’t showered in weeks. This is happening to people everyday, all around us. The poverty rate in 2014 for children under age 18 was 21.1%, which is the category that teens fall under. Teens are affected a great deal by poverty because they sometimes have to find work at a young age. They have to support their family because they are seen as an adult once they become a teen. Teens living in poverty at a young age might grow up and do bad things because they weren’t raised in a good environment.

Things in their lives like food are inconsistent or they might have to move a lot. They also might have a hard time with depression or low self-esteem because of their friends with better households. They also struggle academically and they can’t do their best because it’s difficult to focus in school with the stress of poverty. They concentrate on basic needs rather than schoolwork which is less important. Poverty is about not having enough money to meet basic needs including food, clothing and shelter. However poverty is more than not just having money. In addition to a lack of money, poverty is about not being able to participate in recreational activities; Not being able to send children on a day trip with classmates or to a birthday party, and not being able to pay for medications in times of illness. The poorest people will also have less access to health, education and other vital services. Problems of hunger, malnutrition and disease afflict the poorest in society. The poorest are also typically marginalized from society and have little representation or voice in public and political debates, making it even harder to escape poverty. Poverty is a direct threat to society and equal rights in America.
Poverty, a common problem in the US and yet, something that people consistently overlook. We are often unaware of the magnitude of poverty in the U.S and sometimes even disregard it. People living in destitution are at greater risk for behavioral and mental problems. Children or Teens who live in poverty are prone to poor academic achievements, become school dropouts , or grow subject to abuse or neglect. People in poverty also occasionally show signs of anxiety and depression.
The effects of poverty in America are very serious as well as creating a great impact on American society. Children who grow up in poverty suffer more persistent, frequent, and severe health problems than children who grow up with a better financial circumstance. Many infants that have been born into a poor family have low birth weights, which are associated with many preventable mental and physical disabilities. Also, Children raised in poverty tend to miss school more often because of illness since they are not living in very suitable environments. Child abuse as well as elder abuse have been linked to people who have recently lost jobs or are in poverty. This is all caused by stress, which has been proven to be more frequent in poorer
What’s poverty? Most people consider themselves poor for not being able to buy the newest fashionable car or beautiful big house, while some people can’t even afford to buy a single cart of milk for their children. According to The World Bank Organization, poverty is hunger, lack of shelter, being sick and not able to visit a doctor, and having no access to education. In general, poverty is when a person can’t meet basic personal needs such as food, clothing, and shelter.
For me, or at least before reading the class textbook, it was about money or financial status. It was about unemployment, welfare, crime, and less than what I would consider “acceptable” housing.
In my opinion, the idea of people being responsible for what happens to them when there adolescents growing up in poverty does affect them a lot. When you're suffering from poverty its way more tough to do the things you want to in life than someone who hasn't suffered. Some teens are able to overcome the effects of living in poverty and go on to become very successful adults, but this is not likely. When your an adolescent growing up to become an adult is one of the most important life transitions you will ever have (Kail & Cavanaugh). Most adolescents won't have this opportunity in life because there struggling with poverty. In my opinion, adolescents are responsible for growing up into poverty. When you're a teen you end up making poor decisions
Poverty is “the state or condition of having little or no money, goods, or means of support; condition of being poor” (Dictionary.com, 2017). Based off this definition poverty is a condition that can cause a cascade of cause and effect actions that is detrimental to families and individuals both physically and mentally. Haan, Kaplan, & Camacho (2017) completed a study on the correlation between social and economic status and health in adults in Oakland, CA. They found that the lower the socioeconomic class the higher incidents of diseases and deaths related to chronic diseases (p.1161-1162). Just being without money or little money was not the only indication of health indication, a person living in an area with higher poverty issues
It can be argued that an individual’s economic status is one of the most important aspects of a person’s place in society, almost more than race, gender, or religion. Poverty can be defined as a state of being extremely poor. In the United States and many other areas throughout the world there are many individuals who lack enough money to provide the basic necessities of life. Poverty is a chronic condition and so many children who grow up in it will face the effects over their lifetime. I see the main effects of growing up in poverty being poor health, a high risk for teen pregnancy, and the lack of education.
There are several definitions of the word poverty, depending on the situation it is in and the views of the person defining the word. Income poverty is when a family’s income does not meet a threshold that was federally established (differs across countries). Fundamental poverty is the lack of having choices and opportunities of human dignity. It means not having the basic opportunity to participate effectively in society. It means not having enough clothe and feed a family, not having access to credit, not having a clinic or school to go to, or not being able to earn a living.
Poverty refers to a situation when people’s basic needs are not fulfilled. When people doesn’t have the necessary food to eat or clothes to wear or shelter to stay then its called poverty. Life becomes very difficult for people with income is below the poverty line (BPL). The major reasons or causes of poverty are:
Over 13.3 million teens in America live in poverty. In 1995 about 10 million teens lived in poverty. In America poverty needs addressing by not only the government but local communities. Issues, similar to poverty, can lead to problems later in life. Poverty, an issue that if left unaddressed, could grow out of control. In the past the government looked over poverty because almost everyone lived in poverty. Now the government has passed laws to assist the population living in poverty. Poverty is an injustice to teens who grow up in poverty because, they will live their lives attempting to get out of debt. People of all ages living in debt, do not have to live in poverty, with the help of the community and government, together can prevent poverty.
Poverty is the state of being extremely poor. It is also a multifaceted concept, which may include social, economic, and political elements. According to the UNICEF, 22,000 children die every day due to poverty. While there are other factors involved, these three basic effects of growing up in Poverty include Poor health, a high risk for teen pregnancy, and the lack of education. Unemployment was the leading cause of the Poverty in the United States in 1999 and 2005.
Poverty can be difficult for many especially to those who derive from low income families. The effect of poverty on American youth has been a controversial and has triggered a great debate across not only the poverty reduction proponents and opponents but also society. A clear understanding of poverty impacts on American based youth is highly imperative for all professionals, welfare organizations and adults called upon to support the younger generations to come. According to several journals such as Prevention Researcher; the effects of poverty are immense among youth. Therefore, any poverty reduction proponents must first engage in surveying meaning, causes, theories on poverty and finally the impacts on youth in America.
What is poverty you might ask, well poverty is when one is labeled as inefficient enough to live at society standards and needs to provide for one’s self or their family finically. Poverty may be known as a state symbol in less developed countries. But in reality poverty is everywhere! Even the countries that would never come to mind like America “the land of opportunity “.
For some poverty is a way of life the day to day struggle of keeping food on the table and clothes on their back. For others it is something that is seen only on television, and even then it is not so easy to comprehend. This is usually the case with families who are well to do and money is not an issue. They may describe the characteristics of poverty as to not have certain materialistic items such as clothes, cars, accessories etc. However to someone living in those circumstances it may mean not having the basic necessities of life. What causes this to happen in society? How do people and families reach such a state of desperation? Well there are many reasons as to why this happens; poverty can be attributed to a changing society
