This weeks Ted talk “Why the best hire might not have the best resume” talked about many things. One of the things Ragina Hartley explained was the differences between a silver spoon and a scrapper. Silver spoons are destined for success, they go to the best schools and have the highest grades. As for a scrapper they go to a state school and have to fight tremendous odds to reach their goal. Ragina believes a scrapper deserves an interview because they have a great story and they overcome obstacles. Hartley ask the audience a question. How would a silver spoon handle tough situations? In my opinion a scrapper goes through tough situations their whole life. They succeed when their whole life was destined for failure. Many successful people are
Duckworth explains people with grit are those who confront failure and don’t give up easily. She did research on the U.S Army to determine their grit. She realize, if the soldiers had a though of mind of grit they showed good results in their military performance on summer camp. Also, there was a fascinating research she had with taxi drivers relating to grit. Commonly, one would think that taxi drivers make more money in a rainy day. But what she found out was that taxi drivers work less hours in rainy days because they would make the sufficient money they needed for the day. In similarity, she compare this research to talent and grit. One with talent will spent less time on something so they stop immediately once they have proficient. In the other hand, someone with grit will spend longer time and get more out of it.
Natural or supernatural? “The Demon Lover”, by Elizabeth Bowen, is a short story that tells of the protagonist, Mrs. Drover, and her frightful experience with a ghost. After returning to *her horrifying home in London succeeding World War 2, her guilt and anxiety of breaking her promise to her dead fiancé creates a situation of devilish illusions, leading to a suspenseful ending. It is believed that these experiences could have been either natural, in the thought that these events were made up in her mind, or supernatural due to some force beyond scientific understanding. Arguably, “The Demon Lover” uses the elements of setting and flashbacks to make this a true ghost story.

If you have ever said to yourself, I have no determination in life, I fall flat in everything I attempt; if we all gave up at the sight of failure, no one would ever realize whichever goals they have in life. Angela Lee Duckworth tells Deborah Perkins-Gough that being gritty or having grit is to be resilient in the face of failure or adversity. If you live by a code, of, “If I can’t do it the first time I will not try again” you will never undertake anything. Many studies have been conducted that explicitly say successful people are not just smart, but also strong in the face of challenges. In the article, “What if the secret to success is failure?” Levine collaborates, “The students who persisted in college were not necessarily the ones who had excelled academically at KIPP; they were the ones who were able to
The female characters in Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Blithedale Romance, Zenobia and Priscilla, differ in their representations of womanhood. Zenobia begins as an independent character, whom later surrenders to Hollingsworth's control, whereas Priscilla is ever submissive to his desires. This determines how the male characters, Coverdale and Hollingsworth, view both women. Coverdale and Hollingsworth are first enamored by Zenobia's charm, but both fall for Priscilla's docility. Zenobia represents female independence and Priscilla embodies feminine subservience; the triumph of Priscilla casts the male vote in this novel unanimously
The love triangle between Abigail Williams, John Proctor and Elizabeth Proctor in The Crucible by Arthur Miller is best characterised by not only the theme of love, but also the themes of abhorrence and vengeance. This love triangle forms a predominant part of the play as it introduces the three main themes which allow Miller to develop the storyline and express the two sided nature of people in Salem.
In Isabella Whitney’s “I.W. To Her Unconstant Lover,” she adopted a female persona that attempted to rework the notion of constancy, or faithfulness, in failed male-female relationships of the Elizabethan era. Where women are often accused of being unfaithful, the speaker of the epistle “writes” to her unfaithful male lover and holds him accountable for their failed relationship. By analyzing Whitney’s “I.W. To Her Unconstant Lover,” this paper will argue that Whitney’s persona, I.W., challenges the misogynistic conception of female faithfulness because she uses rhetorical devices — like metaphors and allusions — to shift the blame onto dishonest male lovers, whose actions have a negative impact on the constancy of virtuous women. The speaker’s use of metaphors and Greek allusions fundamentally allows her to rework the idea of female inconstancy, which, in turn, absolves her of fault for being abandoned by her ex-lover and presents her as an intelligent and virtuous woman to her English audience.
