Cars During the 1920s One of the most important parts of our daily life is the car. The twenties was a time when automobiles were becoming more like the cars we see everyday. Many things that are essential to cars were invented during the twenties. This essay will cover car industry facts, Henry Ford, and car improvements during the twenties. Those are some of the reasons why the twenties were so important to car history. Cars were first invented and perfected in Europe during the late 1800s. Though America soon dominated the industry. The “Big Three” American manufacturers during the twenties were Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler. From 1908-1929 these companies accounted for 80% of the industry’s output. The automotive industry in the United States began in the 1890s and rapidly evolved into the largest in the world. However, the United States was overtaken as the largest automobile producer by Japan in the 1980s, and subsequently by China in 2008 ( "2013 production statistics".). The U.S. is currently second among the largest manufacturer in the world by volume, with approximately 8-10 million automobiles manufactured annually (World Motor Vehicle Data 2007). General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler, all based in Metro Detroit dominated the automobile industry.
Cars in the 1920s completely impacted daily life and greatly influenced the cars that we use everyday. Back before cars were popular, everyone traveled by horse and buggy. They had no source of cart heating, nothing to absorb shock, wheels without tires. All they had for streets back then were dirt roads with a top layer of gravel. This was not a problem for horses and buggies, but cars didn’t handle well in the mud. Because of this, the invention of the paved road we use now came about. After that, they needed a more organized and efficient way to navigate to faraway places, since the people could now travel at ease.
