On August 31, 2012, a 35 year old named Kristen got into a terrible car crash. She had many injuries including a lacerated liver, sheared colon, bruised heart, pelvic hematoma, a concussion that lasted for four months, and 12 broken bones. She was told by a police officer that no one who responded to the accident thought she would survive. After her time in the hospital though, she went to see a physical therapist who helped give her hope. They started with standing for a couple seconds at a time with help from eventually walking again. Kristen has mostly recovered with the help of physical therapy and is so grateful. Many of the qualities that are needed is patience, an interest in health and helping people, reading comprehension, active listening, writing, speaking, and monitoring. For some cases, physical therapists need to be an active listener to understand the patient and also have to speak clearly so the patient can understand them and the instructions. They will also need to use things like science and math for many parts of this job. More specifically, physical therapists will need to be able to solve complex problems, have coordination, be able to instruct, make decisions and judgements, analyze the operation, be able to persuade, analyze and evaluate the system, and manage their time. Physical Therapists have to persuade many patients that whatever they instruct them to do will actually help them and not be pointless. Many states also require a criminal law background check. Some students are required to continue learning to become a board-certified specialist. According to the 2015-2016 Occupational Outlook Handbook, Demand for Physical Therapists should increase. Employment is expected to grow 34 percent between 2014 and 2024. For salary, the average yearly wage for ND is $77,820 and the national yearly wage is $85,790. Work hours for physical therapists is most likely 40 hours a week. Usually they only work during the week and don’t travel unless they work with a sports team. Personally, I think traveling with a sports team would be really fun but I wouldn’t want to travel if I had a family.
