Case Study : The Right To Poverty

How does someone overcome living in poverty? Do we just provide the basic needs of living or is there another way to help them that will last forever? Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa, once said, “overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life” (ONE, 2012). Nelson brought some valued points which will be discussed in analyzation of Randy Conway and Angelica Hernandez case study. In the case study, there are two individuals that have a family, but they are struggling in taking care them: due to the lack of income. Human rights, attitudes, empowerment, social workers and barriers are subjects we will use to evaluate this case study.
Human Rights
After reviewing the case study, some of the human rights violations of the clients are highlighted in articles 1, 2, 23, and 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights document. In the case study, Zenith factory did not care about the human rights of Randy and Angelica. The factory did not treat them with dignity and did not treat them equally in pay and protection. Angelica was getting paid less than Randy. Angelica was paid $35 for a 48-hour week unlike Randy that was getting paid $11 an hour. Consequently, Angelica was getting unfair treatment with pay and was also working in unsafe environment. Zenith factory was discriminating against Angelica because of her gender. The human rights that were not meet are in article 1, 2 and 23; the rights of being equal in pay, dignity and there will be no discrimination based on someone’s gender, race, and once status in society (United Nations General Assembly, 1948). Also, in article 23 includes the right to work in a safe environment, the right to join a trade union that will protect them and the right to get paid to take care of themselves and their family (United Nations General Assembly, 1948). In the end of Angelica’s case study, it describes how her human right in article 25, on providing for her family was being ignored because of the gender discrimination and the lack of protection by the Zenith factory.
