In “Chanda's Wars” by Allan Stratton, Nelson, a teenage boy, is introduced to Chanda, a girl who is visiting her family. At first, Nelson doesn't think chanda has much to her. He thinks that she isn’t very smart and is just another city girl. He doesn't want any help from her. “Careful? You’re not careful! You’re a city girl!” (Stratton, 136). This quote shows his feelings for Chanda. It clearly states that he does not want anything to do with her. It almost seems as if he feels that Chanda is a burden to him. After a while, Chanda and Nelson start to chase Mandiki. They have been tracking him for a while and have been through a lot of hardship together. Nelson realized that Chanda isn’t just a stupid city girl and that she is pretty good at
People are constantly showing that they are not very different from each other no matter who they are and what they want to achieve. Anna Comnena is a princess and the first heir to her father’s throne in the Byzantine empire, but she loses it all when her hubris and foolishness get the best of her and stains everyone else’s impression of her, as Tracy Barrett had illustrated in her novel Anna of Byzantium. Alternatively, Icarus is a boy who is the son of Daedalus, the greatest craftsmen of Greece, who becomes imprisoned on the island of Crete with his father and dies during the time when they attempt to escape as shown in the myth portrayed by Sally Benson in her retelling of the myth, “The Flight of Icarus”,
“We have lots of assemblies. Everybody enjoys speaking and being together. We decide things. But they don’t get done” (85).
Seabiscuit: An American Legend is a nonfiction book written by Laura Hillenbrand, published in 2001. This book is a biography of a Thoroughbred racehorse named Seabiscuit. Seabiscuit was a lazy, bandy-legged horse, that should not have one at all, on the other hand, he won 11 out of 15 races in the year 1937. He was also the year’s leading money winner.
In the early ages, mankind was savage. William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, proves that humans are savage still today. Golding does a good job of showing the readers that without civilization, people go mad. Jack shows savage ways early in the book, and it is obvious that things will only get worse. Lord of the Flies shows that when left alone, even the most unlikely people will resort to savage ways.
In Lord Of The Flies by William Golding the conch has hidden meanings. There are so many others that could be talked about, but there is not enough time in this essay. I chose three that are major here they are Power, authority, and worthless. These are only a few examples of the conch.
Chief Bromden decides to elude others and troubles by pretending to be “deaf and dumb.” Since the black assistant nurses believe that he isn’t intelligent enough to understand their conversations, they converse about confidential topics. This permits Bromden to gain insight on what is truly happening in the hospital, or learning about the Big Nurse's’ plans in advance. I predict that he will learn valuable information in the future since the staff believes him to be so incompetent. In a way, the Chief is an actor playing the part of an ignorant patient, and instead of being paid for his acting, his recompense is avoiding trouble and hearing secrets. A literary device used multiple times in the quote is repetition; for example, the words humming,
South Africa is a nation that was once faced with Apartheid, a system that belittles the average African to a point only slightly better than the slave status. In the novel Kaffir Boy by Mark Mathabane, Mark grows up struggling through that very system that was built to restrain him from success. Black South Africans are living as fourth class citizens and suffer at the hands of the white man. They are enslaved with the shackles of Apartheid and are regulated by the Boers. The only hope for escaping the damned nation is rationalizing with the very people who subjugate them, whites and coming to the means of equality. As the novel progresses, the author challenges white people’s perception of Apartheid’s framework and its negative effect on black people by advocating the nightmares of blacks in South Africa to the Smith family, ranting about how blacks are victims of oppression in the bar, and exposing the system that excelled at limiting the black man to

Have you ever read the story “the fight” by Adam Bagdasarian? If you have you definitely know that Adam is way over confident. He thinks he is so tough but he really isn’t, he is super cocky, and he is very unobservant. Adam is definitely way overconifent.
Human population is down to the hundreds, maybe less for all you know. You, Cassie Sullivan are left with your teenage soldier mates, Zombie and Ringer to save the future of the planet from the invaders (often referred to as the “others”). Oh also you have your kindergarten brother sam and his even younger friend Megan to keep safe. This is the scenario in the book I am reading, The Last Star by Rick Yancey. In the final book of the trilogy the author brings you on the journey of these characters to save the planet from the others.
In the beginning, Jack shows his selfish side towards Piggy although it can be seen as true depravity. Jack states “The conch doesn't count on top of the mountains, so you shut up” (Golding, 42). This quote is when Piggy is holding the conch while there on the mountains and is the only one of the boys allowed to speak because of the rules; in Jack’s mind, he thought that what Piggy was saying was worthless so Jack decided to lie and say that that rule didn't matter on the mountain. This quote is related to Regina because both Regina and Jack use very useless language to clarify their thoughts. An example of this is when Regina asks Karen to hangout and Karen says she can't so Regina replies with “boo you, whore”. Both Jack and Regina say whatever
The conch is a seashell, cream in color, which is used as a tool to call people. Symbols in The Lord of the Flies is very important because it helps with communication and identification of ideas. The conch in The Lord of the Flies by William Golding represents power, responsibility and leadership. When the boys hold meetings around the camp fire, only the speaker who is holding the conch may address the crowd.. At times the conch was disobeyed, you can see that in Chapter 1 the conch was powerful but later on in the book some of the boys started to talk over it. The boys in the novel start to develop a relationship with the conch which states Golding’s theme that humans, when

This quote reveals the character trait of determination in Jeanette. It demonstrates how Jeanette is willing to do anything to better her life, a common motif throughout the book. Before this quote, Jeanette discusses how people look down on Ginnie Sue because she is the town whore, which is degrading. At this point in her life, Jeanette is rummaging through trash for food and is barely surviving. The chicken not only represents food, but the ability for Ginnie Sue to provide for her children.
“Don’t educate your children to be rich. Educate them to be happy, so they know the value of things, not the price” Victor Hugo stated. Kino and Juana did not have the values or money that many people had, but they had Coyotito. Coyotito shows many symbols such as love, devotion, dedication, and affection towards Kino and Juana throughout the book. In The Pearl by John Steinbeck, Coyotito's illness and characteristics had an impact on Kino and Juana’s decisions.
