Victorian Era Queen Victoria was the longest reigning British monarch in history. Ruling the U.K. from 1873 to 1901. Queen Victoria’s death on January 22, 1901 at the age of 81 was mourned around the world and signaled an end to the VIctorian Era. For months the Queen’s health had been failing. Victoria had lost her appetite and started looking smaller and smaller. She would become very tired more easily and would become very confused. The Queen had left very detailed instructions as to how she wanted her funeral. The instructions included very specific things she wanted inside her coffin. Many of the items she wanted were from her beloved husband, …show more content…
However, it was during the later years that the drastic changes were brought about in fashion and design of the Victorian women. By 1860, the “skirts were flat” at the front as compared to the bell-shaped skirts worn by the early Victorian women. The day dresses had “ pagoda sleeves” and a “high neckline”. These necklines either had “ lace and or tatted collar” on them. By 1867, Crinoline was replaced by “Bustles” to hold the skirts up. The shirt was high collard and the top-hat had a veil. By 1887, sleeves of the dresses had become slimmer and close fitting. During the 1890’s women’s fashion was simple as compared to the earlier years. Women did not use bustles and crinoline and the dresses were no longer tight fitted. “Corsets” were longer giving the women a slight S-curve silhouette. Skirts worn were closely fitted over the hip and flared just above the …show more content…
The neckties were wider and were to be tied in a bow or looped into a loose knot and tied with a stickpin. Another change that took place was that the frock coats became shorter. Now, they reached up to the knee length as against the previous ones reaching the calf.Three-piece suits were invented around 1870s and instantly were a hit among the people. Another change that was brought during this time was in ties. Neckties were four-in-hand and a new type, known as Ascot ties soon became popular.During the mid-1800, dinner jackets were also used for formal occasions. The Norfolk jacket and woolen breeches came to be used for outdoor activities like shooting. During the winter, men preferred to wear topcoats and the overcoats reaching up to the knees along with contrasting velvet or at times fur
"Everybody will probably think it’s about money …and it is about money. “Not for the use of me getting the money, it’s the way she used her … her power for money. She used it against us all the time. "She used to manipulate us. She was always sitting there and there was this dominating type of aura about her. "Sitting back and always thinking that she's a queen. That's the way she is." (Matthew Wales, 2002)
women on the other hand, often had the stays as part of the outfit themselves(Rose). The jackets were aimed at the triangular shape as well. As said in the article Ruffled Shirts and Tailored Jackets.”Women commonly wore riding habits with what could be considered a precursor to the modern work-suit: jackets that cinched at the waist and form-fitting skirts. Victorian jackets also were often trimmed with fur or other sorts of piping.”(Rose).
On the other hand, the Goods of a queen are highlighted by the different behaviors portrayed by the two queens, Hygd and Modthryth. For example, although being “young, a few short years at court,” Queen Hygd is highly described as “her mind was [being] thoughtful and her manners sure” (ll. 1927-1928). In addition, Queen Hygd “behaved generously/ and stinted nothing when she distributed/ bounty to the Geats,” while Queen Modthryth is completely the opposite of her (ll.1929-1931). Queen Modthryth is opposite from Queen Hygd because she “perpetrated terrible wrongs” such that if a person “stared at her directly during daylight” that is
It is interesting to note that when the Queen receives Snow White?s heart, she eats it. ?And [the heart] was salted and cooked and the wicked woman ate it up, thinking that there was an end of Snow White? (Grimm and Grimm 168). This is a remnant of a primitive cannibalistic belief that one receives power and characters through what is consumed. By devouring what she is told to be Snow White?s heart, the Queen believes she is capturing Snow White?s beauty and power within herself (Sale, 1979). These instances show that the Queen was driven to act by her envy of Snow White?s beauty, which was said to be more beautiful than her own. As she saw Snow White?s beauty as a threat to her own (and through it, her power), she saw the need to eliminate Snow White completely. In consuming Snow White?s heart not only is she celebrating her triumph over Snow White, but she is reinforcing her own beauty and vitality.
In the latter part of the Victorian era there were significant developments signaling the decline of the corset. The way garments were produced is perhaps the key factor in the move away from the corset. In 1839, a Frenchman by the name of Jean Werly patented a loom for the production of women 's corsets. This type of corset was popular until 1890, when machine-made corsets gained popularity. The development of the sewing machine in the early 1850’s gradually led to mass production, manufacturers could produce corsets in far greater numbers and increase the variety of designs available to women of all classes. These advances finally led the way to new designs in underwear in keeping with the changes to the fashions and silhouettes of the early Twentieth Century.
“DID I SAY I CARE FOR YOUR SAFETY? No! Damn fool! EXECUTION! EXECUTION!” She screamed it loud as she could, rattling the throne beneath her, but she soon stood up and started to yell and scream. She was nothing but a queen, and the fool’s head would be beneath her, rolling on the grass, blood trailing
In the 1830s there were innovations in roller printing on textiles which introduced new fabrics for women. Men wore padded shoulders and women wore colossal sleeves to emphasize on a thin waist. A new fashion arrived; low boots with elastic insets. Men began wearing “greatcoats” for day wear. 1830:

She feels as though if her husband is incapable of becoming king she will do what is necessary herself in seeing that she is queen.
During Regency most women didn’t wear undergarments. Those who did wore what were called Chemises. Chemises were like tank tops or slips and they were made of Cotton or Linen. Because chemises didn’t provide much support, tight chemises were combined with Corsets to give a woman more shape.
In 18th century society, women were objects of beauty. In a time period where corsets
Whenever the queen is displeased it usually results in somebody getting their head cut off. This can be seen when Alice is put on trial in front of the queen and her court. The queens ruling results in Alice being guilty and becoming defiant to the queen. As a result the queen shouts, “off with her head!” (Carroll, 102). This represents Alice and her madness because as I stated earlier, this was all in Alice’s dream. Therefore the queen is a representation of what goes on in Alice’s head. She has that dark mental side to her nature.
The 1920’s, also called the roaring 20’s, was a time of change. During this time period the fashion for both men and women was changing immensely. The aftermath of WWI caused America to enter a vigorous era. As a result of the role of women during the war, many customs and morals were changing. The Stock Market started booming, many new dances and music came about, and women got the right to vote and enter the workforce. There was an uprise in almost every activity, and fashion was definitely one (Tirocchi, Anna and Laura). Although fashion varied throughout the decade, one could notice a drastic change from the prior fashion.
The Victorian period started in 1837 through 1901 under Queen Victoria’s reign. The period got divided into three stages: Early, middle and late Victorians periods. During, the early Victorian era took the throne. Under the middle years, the industrialization of the country began and everything stay steady. On the last few years, a lot of problems rise up with Ireland and the English colonies. In her 63 years of ruling lots of cultural, political and economic changes arise. However, under the period, many diseases were developed such as typhus and cholera because of the food distribution and hunger. Social changes such as women’s vote and rights were proclaimed. New science and technological theories were promoted such as Darwin’s Evolution Theory and Charles Lyell’s Theory of Uniformitarianism. Other social and economic changes
