Everyone loves their pets and would do what is best for them in every situation right? When I was five years old we put down my dog Shady down because she could no longer control her bladder and could not walk any longer. At the moment I did not think it was the best alternative but after looking back, it saved Shady from unnecessary pain and suffering. My story ties in with the book, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. In this book George kills Lennie due to the lack of control he had over Lennie’s actions, lack of a better option, and to give Lennie a calm painless death where their would be no suffering.
Some people may argue that George had other options than killing Lennie. Lennie is in this situation because he killed Curley’s wife.
If you were mentally challenged and could not perform daily tasks like everybody else, would you want to be shamed and belittled to words such as ‘crazy’ or ‘retarded’? This was the situation for Lennie Small in the novel Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck. In the novel, Lennie works on a farm with his friend, George. George and other characters in the book trivialize and dismiss Lennie as crazy, instead of what he really was; mentally disabled with cases such as Autism, Asperger's, or even mild down syndrome. Lennie possess many characteristics that are very similar to those who have mental illnesses. Also, during the time that the novel Of Mice and Men was published, these illnesses
Everyone has had a caretaker or guardian to protect and care for them at some period in time. Developing into an adult is often times when a person becomes able to live independently. However, this is not the case for Lennie Small from the story, “Of Mice and Men” as a result of his disability. Being dependant on other people, Lennie needs a caretaker because of the lack of family to protect him. Someone without family relation, George, rises to the position as his caretaker in the harsh, unforgiving circumstances they have at the moment. Dreaming of a better future, George has to carry Lennie from job to job in order to eventually collect enough money to finally claim their land as their own. George has good, honest intentions for Lennie and only strives to give him the best conditions even if it meant he had to pull the trigger against him.
Lennie small is a large strong, and un intelligent man. He rarely thinks for himself and can’t hold his own. He does not understand Who you can laugh at or when you can laugh which makes him not have any social awareness. Lennie also never learns throughout the course of this story. He never learns to stay away from some people. For All these reasons we are sympathetic for him.
"'No- look! I was jus' foolin', Lennie. 'Cause I want you to stay with me.'"
“I di’n’t forget, you bet, God damn. Hid in the bush an’ wait for George” Lennie said softly in the bush as he waited for George. In this book Of Mice and Men there are two main characters; Lennie Smalls and George Milton. They are ranchers going to look for new work. Lennie is a bigger guy, like a bear who is very sweet and never means any harm.
Lennie has shown throughout the book that he is very unique compared to the other characters. He is considered “big but small” meaning physically he is big but mentally he is small. Lennie is a brawny, quiet, and awkward character. He is childlike, but his strength is incredible. Compared to the other characters he is tall, and he makes hard work look like a piece of cake.
The novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck takes place on a ranch a few miles outside of Soledad, in a valley called Salinas during the Great Depression in California. The novel is about two itinerant ranch hands, George and Lennie, who stick together and dream of one day owning their own farm. Unfortunately, this dream, along with Lennie, dies when George makes the difficult decision of killing his friend Lennie after he accidentally snaps a woman’s neck towards the end of the novel. George’s action of killing Lennie at the end of the novel was incorrect.
In the fictional story Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, George was justified in his decision to end Lennie’s life. Lennie was like a forced upon-tag along that George had to put up with for many years. In the book, Slim and George always had talked about how Lennie was such a good man and that he never meant no harm, although, Lennie did bring harm to many. For example, he killed the pup and Curley’s wife. Lennie is a masculine man and he works hard too, that doesn’t change that he wasn’t wise enough to live the way George and he have to. Candy admitted after his dog had been shot, “‘When they can me here I wisht somebody’d shoot me. But they won’t do nothing like that.” (Steinbeck, 1937, p.60) This quote put the idea in George’s
Should someone that doesn’t have authority be allowed to end another’s life? In the novella, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, George Milton is faced with many ups and downs with Lennie Smalls. He is eventually faced to put an end to Lennie’s life. After all of the constant problems of running and other struggles with George’s friend, made things much worse. With all the accidental murders by George’s mentally challenged friend, things went to a downfall.
“There is no greater disability in society, than the inability to see a person as more,”-Robert M. Hensel. Lennie and George are migrant workers who start out in a small town in weed, Lennie gets into trouble and they flee and end up Soledad where they meet some of the other migrant workers. Curley in particular doesn’t quite fantasy Lennie, Curley’s wife is quite the flirt and Lennie ends up accidentally killing her due to his uncontrollable strength paired with his mental disabilities. George mercy kills Lennie and the previous dream of their own ranch went awry.In his novella Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck brings tells us a story about what it’s like being a mentally disabled person in the 1930s and the problems he and his friend are faced with.Lennie represents ableism in Of Mice and Men, which is shown in his childish ways, not being able to control his moods and strength,
Lennie, the second main character, was a fairly large man with wide pale eyes, and because he was so big he walked heavily, with his feet dragging on the ground (Steinbeck 2). Lennie likes to imitate others, and is often told not to act like his self. Lennie is mentally handicapped, and was incapable of looking after his self (Beach). With his condition he cannot resist touching soft objects and he is prone to unintentionally getting into serious trouble (Steinbeck 4). Although Lennie has the mind of a child, he is indeed a powerful man with strong hands (Isaacs).
Everyone has encountered someone who was very harsh, mean and cold hearted. Through that hard shell there is a warm hearted, loving, and caring human being. In the book Of Mice and Men Lennie is a character known as George's best friend , George is not always the best to Lennie he is the one who gets Georges cold hearted side. In the friendship of the two george is the more dominate, smart, and in charge one of the two. In that case lennie just sits back and lets George do all the talking and decision making. George has seniority over Lennie so he can take advantage of Lennie because thats all that Lennie really knows.
The story is about to workers named Lennie and George who are both opposites. George is a small dark man with sharp, strong features. Lennie is his total opposite he is a large man with a shapeless face. The both have been left off a bus miles away from there new job at a ranch in California. After they or Lennie got in trouble the decided to start fresh to come to California to start fresh.
Everything has two sides, include dreams and aspirations. George and Lennie in Of mice and Men dreams of purchasing a ranch by their own efforts. The mother in The Joy Luck Club expects her daughter Jing-Mei Woo to become a prodigy. Dreams can push people forward, bring relationships closer and makes them more ambitious about achieving their ultimate goals. Nonetheless, on the other hand, dreams may also have a negative influence on people’s daily life and drives relationships away.
Once George figures out he can't live without Lennie he feels like Aunt Clara will haunt him because he was supposed to help him out and watch him. George is thinking of running to a different town because Curley will probably end up killing George.
