These behaviors come in the form of intentionally trapping ships to stock his island with humans. He then hunts said humans because he finds it dangerous and exciting, and he also lives in isolation, only having contact with Ivan his servant. All of these aspects of his life contribute to his semi-insane traits which he demonstrates in the story.
