Merriam Webster defines the crooked word of twisted as mentally or emotionally unsound or disturbed, giving synonyms like sick and cruel-minded. Merriam Webster also explains the idea of a hero as a person admired for achievements and noble qualities, and/or one who shows great courage. While agreeing with these denotations, twisted can have several different interpretations based on a person’s perspective. Factors that may change a person’s views on who or what is “twisted” are often his or her ideology, cultural background, religion, social outlook, and other orientations. As witnessed in Our Twisted Hero by Yi Munyol, there are several characters who could fit the twisted or hero role. For example, some could see Han as the hero for putting the thought of combatting Om as monitor initially in the minds of his peers, or the new teacher could be viewed as the hero with his fight to demolish Om’s power in the classroom. While these points are valid, Han or the new teacher do not seem twisted in much or any form; they each had purposes and reasoning for what they felt they had to do to either fit into the school environment or to help the students realize their mistakes with harsh but reflective punishments. On the other hand, Om Sokdae, the class monitor, appears to fit the role of the twisted and hero components best. Om’s ludicrous punishments and referendums that he uses to control the class not only teach the students order and adherence, but he also shows them the
In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, John Proctor, the protagonist, is a farmer in his middle thirties. The author gives little to no detailed physical description of him, but from Proctor’s speech, we can still picture him as a strong and powerful man who is able to keep every situation under the control, the kind of personality which earns him deep respect and even fear from the people in town. On the other hand, Abigail Williams, the antagonist, plays an inferior role as an orphan who has no social status in a place like Salem. Over the course of the play, John Proctor is absolutely awakened and transformed by Abigail Williams. In the end, he overcomes the crucible by releasing himself from his guilt of
In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, it takes place in Salem, Massachusetts during colonial America. Throughout the story a group of girls makes accusations a mass of people of practicing witchcraft, one of the worst crimes to commit during that period, and people are being sentenced to hang for denying witchery. In the Crucible there are many lessons that Arthur Miller wants to teach you. To me a lot of the lessons that were taught in this story are important but I feel like one of them is the most important. Arthur Miller demonstrates that one of the lessons implied in the story is people’s character and how it affects those people and others. Examples of character are Giles Corey, John Proctor, Abigail Williams.
A hero is born is how every story starts with the same story, climax, and ending, but with this specific story this hero wasn’t born he was created. Throughout the book and the cases being fought, Bryan Stevenson is the hero; the man in quest of justice. His motive and moral code is defending the innocents and protecting their lives within the corrupt justice system. With each case, he begins to see what he is capable of and how he holds the lives of these people. Such examples would be the puritans, acknowledging their sins and trying to be redeemed by God. However, finding redemption comes with difficulties in their path to gain their redemption. Although, for Bryan Stevenson he is trying to find the innocence in these felons on death
In The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller involves a character named John Proctor, an even-tempered farmer, who cared about how others saw him as. Procter was a married man to Elizabeth Proctor and a father of three as well. Throughout the book, Procter is shown as a man obsessed with his status to protect his name. The following quote says “... there is evidence to suggest that he had a sharp and biting way with hypocrites. He was the kind of man--powerful of body, even-tempered, and not easily led….”, this shows he was the type of a person to unleash his temper with people often, although it was good because he was well known for revealing hypocrisy. This gave him honor in his town and respect by his
In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller was based on the Salem, witch trials when the people of the town where accusing each other of witchcraft and those held for questioning would stand trial had a choice to be valor. In Miller’s portrayal of the ghastly, sickening inquiry of witchcraft many people in the 1690’s were people of the township were maintaining guard for their beliefs; while others of the community of Salem were cowards who took the easy out of the accusations they were on trial. The townspeople of Salem are going through a day people are courageous even in a way others could not be or were never suppose to be. Those characters display their courage in the town at the time of need, John Proctor is a selfless man when only stating
American playwright and theatrical figure in the twentieth-century, Arthur Miller, once said, “Betrayal is the only truth that sticks.” Though he did not include this quote in the context of his famous work, The Crucible, his wise words can also be relevant in this play. The play takes place during the era of the Salem Witch Trials in 1692. In his composition, he includes the story of Mr. and Mrs. Proctor, a married couple living outside of Salem in the time period of the trials. Abigail Williams, the family’s servant, has an affair with Mr. Proctor, which becomes a greatly kept secret before prior to the events of the play. Proctor then fully experiences the consequences of betraying his wife, which include shame of betrayal and fear of
How can someone be willing fall on a bomb then live, but not want to be recognized as a hero? In the book “Heroes” by Robert Cormier, the main character, Francis Cassavant, does just that. Francis Joseph Cassavant is a shy boy with a very low esteem and a hatred for himself causing him to become a suicidal character.
Bad things happen from people making decisions based on lies and fear, but evil things
Abigail Williams is the most manipulative character in The Crucible. Her disposition allows her to threaten, lie, and act to get her way. After the girls were caught in the forest dancing, singing, and participating in charms, Abigail threatens all the girls to say and go along with the witchcraft accusations. If they said anything she would deal with them, like she dealt with the chicken. The purpose she started all this was to get Elizabeth Proctor, John Proctor’s wife, dead. Abigail wanted to be Abigail Proctor, she wanted to marry him, but Elizabeth was in the way. This was one step closer to getting Elizabeth executed and one step closer for Abigail to be John’s wife. The final step into getting the court convinced that Elizabeth was compacted with the devil was when Abigail was
Holly Hollingsworth The Chosen Essay 11/20/15 Differences between people often cause resentment and anger. In chapter one of Chaim Potok’s novel The Chosen, the main character, Reuven, struggles to control his emotions when confronted with an unfamiliar Hasidic baseball team. Potok uses Reuven’s first person point of view to reveal Reuven’s conflicting emotions towards Danny and his baseball team. Potok begins his novel with a striking observation to set the tone for the first chapter, acknowledging that the main character, Reuven, and another boy Danny live “within five blocks” of each other, but have never met or even known of the other boy before.
Having a successful life in America is like a goal to many people who do not have the opportunity to make this goal a reality. Living the “American Dream” was a goal for many foreigners from as early as the 1950’s up until now. Sometimes, the perfect life for one person might not be the same perfect life for others. Abraham Lincoln said “Folks are usually as bout as happy as they make their minds up to be.” This quote means that happiness is not all about the circumstance of a situation rather than how one looks at it. Throughout the story of Revolutionary Road, happiness seems to quickly reveal itself to be the downfall of Frank and April Wheeler’s relationship. One of the many examples of Frank
Christophe develops this guilt because he believes if he had done things differently, the family would still be alive. This becomes evident when he states, “this is my fault. I did order the gates closed, fearing an unseen enemy […] Why didn’t I leave the gates open for stragglers? What if there are more out there, frozen in the snow? What did I do in my haste and fear? Sick with guilt, I can barely keep myself up. I’m responsible for that family” (Boyden 399). Identical to Anna May, Christophe was also forced to endure his guilt through the dreams that haunt him. This is clear when he states, “when I sleep, it’s fitful, and I see Satan’s face peering in my window, looking down at me and grinning” (Boyden 399). Christophe finally begins to
Friendship: the emotions or conduct of friends, the state of being friends. In the novel The Chosen by Chaim Potok neither Danny Saunders, and Reuven Malther lives would have been the same without each other.
Terrorism, one of the most twisted causes in the world, is seen as heroic to a some people. And when considering cultural ways of viewing heros, we generally put them on the highest pedestals for what they do. They are seen as admirable and an image people strive to be. But, a twisted hero is not some who is put on that pedestal. They are not admired and look upon as great. By definition twisted means unpleasantly, or unhealthily abnormal. Also, if you just think about it, twisted is something grotesque in nature and not desired upon being. Therefore, a twisted hero is someone who although they use unconventional and undesirable methods to advance a cause, but by the fruit of their actions they are heroic.
