In life, people's' characters are shown through their actions, words and other’s opinions. There are no different when it comes to characterization in order for readers to connect with the character; author needs to present the character in a 3-dimensional lense that demonstrates human or human-like quality.
My first character is Andi- The book’s main protagonist. The reader further understands Andi when the author wrote in Andi’s perspective, “I hope mom realizes how awesome I have been about the whole brother business. I couldn't imagine any of the kids at my school being so relaxed about suddenly acquiring a sibling. Go ahead, World, bring on the long-lost relative.” (Gourlay 78). This characterization is a self-assessment of Andi. Readers can get a chilled personality from Andi, as most people would not react with a relaxed demeanor when they are suddenly getting a long lost sibling. Readers can also

In the book, Andi was talking about how there is a picture of Bernardo dad, Andi’s mom’s ex-husband, taking center stage. While her mom and dad wedding pictures are on the side. The author wrote the following about how Andi’s dad reacts to the situation, “Dad didn't seem to mind having to picture up there. He acted like it was the most natural thing in the world for his wife ex-husband to take center stage on the mantelpiece.” in this paragraph, the reader gets a sense of the personality of Andi's dad. It can also show her dad is very understanding, as the author later wrote, “ the husband named Bernardo had not woken up from the fever. He was dead” (29). This indirect characterization is done by other’s opinion, as William’s daughter described him here. This also shows that the only motivation Andi’s dad here is probably to make his wife happy. The author presented the dad as a good character since he is understanding and caring. In addition, he is willing to make sacrifices for the ones he
Through characterisation, the author is able to express the main idea of disempowerment and also allowing us as readers to feel discontented and upset towards the main character.
Characters play a major role in ensuring that the novels can be read and comprehended. However, the success of a novel is dependent on the quality of characterization and whether they will attract the
characters are in many ways divergent, and it is in fact these traits that reveal the most about
• What are the characters’ emotions, attitudes, and behaviors? What do these indicate to the reader about the character?
The first passage reveals the parallel suffering occurring in the lives of different members of the family, which emphasizes the echoes between the sufferings of the father and the narrator. The narrator’s father’s despair over having watched
In “I’m Not My Brother; I’m Me,” author Peg Kehret expresses the expectations passed down from her two older brothers and the negative impacts these expectations had on her. From my point of view, I fully agree with the author. In my case, I have a 23-year old sister who is the epitome of perfection. She graduated top of her class in both high school and university, is athletic, and is currently working on Wall Street in New York City. In addition, she is very diligent at Chinese, public speaking, and ultimately anything related to school. As a result of this, as one can imagine, I constantly live in her long shadow. My sister is a very goal-oriented person and strives to reach them. She knew exactly what she wanted to be and the path she had to take to get there at a very young age. Throughout
Characters are a vital element of fiction; without them, a story falls apart because the readers are forced to only focus on its plot, setting, or other aspects of fiction. Characterization is the process in which the author describes the distinctive nature or features of a particular character. A character is often characterized by their own dialogue, actions, thoughts, appearance, and interpretation by the author or by other characters in the story. Through these methods, an author can really bring their characters to life for the reader. In “My Kid’s Dog,” Ron Hansen uses these methods to bring all his characters to life. He portrays the strained relationship an owner has with his ‘daughter’s’ pet dog, and the difficulties overcoming his hardships. Through methods of characterization, Hansen unveils the friction between the dad and the dog and allows the reader to empathize with them, incorporating humor throughout the story, as well.
Junior is very observant and he describes his mother in a detailed way. He deposits emphasis on his mother’s hands. “One thing about Mami, her palms never sweated.” (27) Junior’s mother is a very lovely person, pretty and knows how to take good care of his sons. In contrast, the Puerto Rican woman is described oppositely of his mother. “She had papery hands, and when she rubbed the towel on my chest, she did it hard, like I was a bumper she was waxing.”(35) According to Junior, the Puerto Rican woman is careless and is not lovely as his mother. This increases his disgust towards his father for being with such a woman that will never be like his mother. This fact supports the idea that his son-father relationship is related to the Freud’s Oedipal Conflict.
The narrator is totally crushed by the gender discrimination. She longed to be seen by her mother and her grandma. The narrator is heartbroken that her mother loved her brother more than her and failed to notice her. “When she went into Nonso’s room to say good night, she always came out laughing that laugh. Most times, you pressed your palms to your ears to keep the sound out, and kept your palms pressed to your ears, even when she came into your room to say Good night, darling, sleep well. She never left your room with that laugh” (190). Her agony can be easily seen by the way of her narrating. She does not get the affection that she deserves. She really needs the affection from her own mother, but she is not getting it. She compares the love which her mother shows to his brother and herself. This is gender discrimination can be seen with her grandmother too. She hated her grandma as she would always support her brother and find fault with her. Even though what the brother did, no matter what crime. Her mother and grandmother always supported her brother and never supported or showed interest towards
Often times, people view individuals by the way they handle situations and their responses to others. Every character in a story can be summed up in about three to four characteristics based on their actions and speech. In the short story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, the narrator reveals his true character through the way he treats his younger brother. He possesses characteristics including authority, pride, and cruelty, and readers know these traits through Hurst’s dialogue and actions.

“Our brothers and sisters are there with us from the dawn of our personal stories to the inevitable dusk” (Susan Scarf Merrell). Merrell, an American author and a creative writing and literature teacher at Stony Brook Southampton, states that since the early days of your youth to the end of our story our siblings are there throughout our whole journey. Life is similar to a play; parents pass away during the first half; while one’s children come in during the second half; but siblings are there throughout both acts. Tobias Wolff’s, The Rich Brother, portrays the relationship between two brothers that are complete opposites; yet they know each other’s strengths and weaknesses better than anyone else will ever be able. The Rich Brother describes a complex sibling relationship that is fairly common in today’s society; Tobias Wolff makes use of pathos by incorporating real life sibling abuse; and ethos in his own life and credentials.
The detailed description that O’Brien clearly uses, expresses the personalities of each of the characters. One way how O’Brien tells the readers about the characters personalities is based on what they carry in terms of their tangible
Characterization is how the characters in the text are viewed and developed as the text expands. For this, I will consider the character, Nyla (purple). Nyla is an innocent girl with dull eyes and voice. Her innocence is revealed as tells of her first time sex encounter and also in her lack of understanding of her mum and sister’s relationship. Her confession of sex to an older man is like that of a young misled child. She is ignorant of the world and its dangers. She just completed high school and is very excited, happy to lose her virginity to childhood sweetheart. Reality drowns on her when she finds out she is pregnant and needed to abort. Her innocence gives her away when she tries to

And through the protagonists' facial expressions and body movements to highlight the character's personality characteristics, the expressions of the characters' faces and the eyes' communication, the film's atmosphere changing perfect. However, in the fiction, the description is based on dialogue, background and psychological details. The depiction brings out the atmosphere, shows the change of atmosphere through the psychological changes of the characters, pays too much attention to the details of the dialogue, and makes people feel that they are on the scene, And the atmosphere of the characters' dialogue is very good.
