Many people have different views on what success is and why they think success happens that way. I personally think being success is when you can truly not work a 9-5 and have people work. Charley and Willy have different opinions on how they become successful, achieve success and what happens why they get there. Success is a word that really hard to define, because everyone will have a different definition for this word. In fact, there no exact definition for the word "success". For a student, maybe the success means to pass all courses of the semester; for a business man, signing a importance contract and get a lot of money are successes; and for a president, leading the country to develop and make the people have a better life are success. For me, I also have my own definition for the word "success". There are many different understandings of what success is. Some relate success to money, others relate success to happiness, but it all depends on the type of person.
Is that success? What or who defines success? Different people have different interpretations of what success means to them.
The definition of success differs from person to person. According to the “Poolside” Cadillac commercial, success is having a large house, nice family and a new car. How is that success accomplished? According to the mainstream media, success is achieved through hard work and perseverance. Not by taking extravagant vacations, or working for only a few hours a day. Success for others on the other hand could be having a large amount of free time. The media gives examples of what they think success is, but ultimately it’s up to the person to decide what is success is.
What is the real definition of success, in fact is there even a definition? Well, in the book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell it is the story of success. Some successful people are born with talent, and skills. As others may have to put in hard work to get to where they are. Every successful person is different, which means there is no definition for being successful. Being successful is made of many different categories. Many successful people are born with talents, put in hard work, and are different from everyone else.
Who defines success? We would like to believe that we all do. That it is our beliefs that conceive the idea of success in society. That the true definition of success is what we believe it is–what we make it to be. But we don’t define success, society does.

Success is defined as the accomplishment of an aim or purpose in the dictionary but the definition varies from person. In the autobiography of Sandra Cisneros, “Straw into Gold” and of Ben Franklin they both have a strong theme of success. Within these essays they both proved that if you have a dream, you should follow it with all your heart despite any obstacle because they could be stepping stones in disguise. Webster defines success as “achieving wealth, respect, or fame.” However, my definition of success revolves around much more. Personal success, in my opinion, is achieved by the amount of happiness experienced by others around you. Being the good in an otherwise bad day, bringing a smile to a depressed face, or encouraging someone around you to try something new are all ways I feel triumphant.
In my eyes, success can have a variety of different meanings. I believe success comes within a person and their dreams. It doesn't have to mean you're the richest person or have the biggest house. I believe in a more humbling success. In other words, success displays one who has reached his own personal goals and is happy and content with the outcome of the chosen goals.
As it is commonly used, the word "success" is sometimes synonymous with another word — "winning." Success is beating the other guy and getting the big salary. Success is what happens when other people think you're a success or when you can convince them of it.
Willy believes education is not important for his son's future. Although Biff is failing his math course and Bernard is passing Willy still accepts the fact that his son will achieve success. Being handsome, popular, and excellent in sports adds to this belief. Willy does not realize that an individual must work hard to accomplish success. He also feels he is higher in status than Bernard's father Charley because "Charley is not-liked. He's liked, but he's not-well liked." (1257) Even though he feels this way he is also jealous of Charley's business success. Willy felt too proud to even accept a paying job from Charley after his boss, Howard Wagner, fired him. What is success? Is it the process of doing a task and receiving a positive result acceptable amongst the community, or is it simply achieving ones own personal goals? Success to me can mean many things. Although I am successful in school, that does not necessarily mean I will lead a successful life.
