An American hero can be defined as an individual whose action has created a major impact on the country. Furthermore, his or her actions can leave lasting implications that may have an affect on other individuals. From the epigraph, Wallace Stegner demonstrates the qualities of an American hero. He states that these individuals are free from social obligations and other responsibilities that may considered as “irksome”, and evidently follow no agenda. In the story “Into The Wild”, by Jon Krakauer, the main character Chris McCandless can be identified as an American hero. McCandless portrays countless characteristics of this model; for example, in the beginning of the book, after his encounter with a guy name Gallien, Chris offers his watch
Heroes cannot be simply defined in a few words; being a hero is not being perfect, it is holding some specific, heroic qualities that people can look up to. Especially in the case of Chris McCandless, one must understand that he was a real person, a person that possessed certain negative aspects of human nature; he is not a figure in a fictional piece of work that can be sculpted to the idea of a hero. Using this definition of a hero, Chris McCandless does in fact, embody the idea of a hero as someone to be admired to a certain extent; he is a figure that has shown noble qualities and strength through adversity.
In the novel Into the Wild, author Jon Krakauer writes,“They will think they have bought my respect” (21). In this quote by the protagonist in the novel, Chris McCandless explains that his parents tried to buy his respect and honor with gifts, however they did not understand Chris’s loathe for material goods. His parents did not understand that respect is earned, not bought, and they did not earn his respect. His poor relationship with his parents and his history with rebellion are some of the main causes for why he disappeared from his family, this also explains his narcissism as he only ever had to care for himself. In Into the Wild, Chris Mccandless believes that an individual’s purpose is to be unique and to avoid being conformed by

Actions whether wrong or correct affect the life lived, each one of us as decides what to do with our lives and control what is done. As we live our lives we make choices and these choices are permissible because of what we wish to achieve. Through decades and centuries humanity has wondered the exact question, why do people do what they do? Is it just an urge of adrenaline? Even so what is to happen or said when said person never appear ever again. Adam Shepard and Chris McCandless were two very different people however they both had one goal. Shepherd's goal was to accomplish the american dream and McCandless's goal was to escape from society. Both Shepard and McCandless wanted to accomplish different things McCandless wanted to escape from society and Shepard wanted to prove to society that the american dream is still attainable. However Adam shepherds project was admirable and had a positive impact on society. On the other hand Chris McCandless's project was not admirable and did not have a positive impact on his family or society.
The novel Into The Wild is a beautifully written novel by jon krakauer about the adventure of a young man named chris mccandless. The title is from the final letter that he wrote to wayne westerberg before he left from society to be free. As a whole the book is a beautiful story about his emotions and adventures across the country. It is an example of a man achieving true freedom through hard emotional turmoil. The fact that it actually happened also adds a sense of sympathy with the man chris mccandless. In the novel Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer demonstrates Chris Mccandless achieving his freedom.
to ask a certain question at the end of it all: Is Chris McCandless someone people should look
I choose this quote because it is a prime example of the major theme in this book, which is ultimate freedom. McCandless displays his naiveness as well as his view on what is socially valued. This quote is a prime example of Chris’s hunger for ultimate freedom.
What makes a true American hero? A hero is someone admired for their achievements and qualities, or one who shows great courage. Heroes are looked up to by many for their selflessness or actions in situations. In Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huck Finn is a true hero. His actions throughout the story help define him as such. Huckleberry Finn is a hero because he is clever, loyal, and moral.
Many saw Chris McCandless as a wacko, a narcissist, and an arrogant boy while others admired Chris McCandless for his courage and noble ideas. I personally saw Chris McCandless as a work of art and even developed a slight crush. I think that McCandless’s beliefs on creating experiences by never staying put and becoming one with the wild are beautiful. His beliefs have influenced me to view things differently when it comes to life and society and I know i'm not the only one.
Transcendentalism is the philosophical movement thats based on nature and spirituality while going against society and materialism (Transcendentalists, 2016). Into the Wild provides a narrative of Chris McCandless, a 22-years-old young man who left what appeared to be a privileged life in 1990. Chris, as a young child, lived in a dysfunctional family and was angered by the treatment of his mother and father and their poor parenting. As Chris graduates, he distances himself from from his family and friends, disappearing with out any information and started an off road trip. The movie documents events at home, the people he met and his gradual realisation of the importance of human relationships.
Many young adults can be seen making extraneous efforts towards a future that ultimately leads them to freedom. The paths they choose to attain this freedom can positively or negatively affect their character and how they perceive people and the world. In the film, Into the Wild, Chris McCandless shows us that ultimate freedom, to a certain extent, is an achievement that cannot compare to any other, but it is nonetheless a greedy and inconsiderate desire to achieve. Although pursuing ultimate freedom will bring the most happiness to oneself, carrying out this freedom is purely an individual task that is inherently selfish. In life, the desire for freedom can be a powerful drive to allow a person to attain happiness, in which they would have
Chris McCandless was born in California and was the first born if Walt and Billie McCandless. They moved to Washington D.C in 1976 when Walt was hired by NASA as an antenna specialist. Chris graduated from Woodson high in 1986, he was a very smart student but he didn’t like being told what to do. Chris was active in the school's track team, he was the captain. When he would take his teammates out running he often wanted them to think it was like a run of faith where they would think they are running from their problems or the evils of the world. In 1986 Chris returns to his hometown he finds out Walt didn’t divorce his first wife when his sister Carine and Chris was born, and “Lived a double life”. After that, Chris didn’t think of his father
Chris McCandless was a courageous man that had no fear but unfortunately it cost him his life. Chris had many adventures he met many people that little to him mean so much to them and he just ignored and became distant. What Chris did to Wayne was a bit harsh like Wayne is a very sweet guy and Chris was the son he never got to see grow up. Also Chris has done some amazing things without knowledge of places he was going which sadly resulted in his death. I admire Chris and like the things he did than there is the things which I don’t agree on what he did.
The definition of a hero is: "a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities" (Merriam Webster). An American hero is someone who, yes follows this definition, but completes it in a way that furthers America as a nation. A true American hero leaves a lasting impression that will be remembered for generations to come. An American hero must
