Chronicle of a Death Foretold recounts the story of Santiago Nasar, but more importantly the story of his murder. Throughout the story we learn the motive for the murder, mainly to avenge the honour that was allegedly taken from the Vicario family. While we do not get to know Santiago Nasar on a personal level, we do receive enough information to draw our own conclusions of whether or not he was innocent or guilty of taking Angela Vicario’s virginity. With the information given and enough reading between the lines, I believe that Santiago Nasar was innocent at the time of his murder due to the inconsistencies of Angela’s accusation. The minute Angela Vicario confided in her mother that her husband Bayardo San Roman returned her to her home because she was not a virgin, she placed a target on Santiago Nasar’s back. In their blind rage, Angela’s twin brothers set out on a manhunt without questioning their sister or looking at the evidence in front of them. One evident flaw in Angela’s claim that Santiago Nasar took her virginity is that she and Santiago have never been seen together, and there are no obvious lines in the book where Angela and Santiago interact with each other except for chapter two where he says, “"She's all set to be hooked," Santiago Nasar would tell me, "your cousin the ninny is" (Marquez; ch 2. Pg 16). The ‘ninny’ comment alone shows how Santiago felt about Angela, seeing her as foolish and immature. It should also be noted that Angela and Santiago were
