Cinematic Techniques The well-known director Tim Burton is famous for his creepy yet kid friendly films. A few popular movies being, Corpse Bride, Edward Scissorhands, and Charlie and the Chocolate factory. He strongly conveys tone and mood in each of these films to keep an audience engaged and sympathetic. Tim Burton uses many cinematic techniques to have an affect on the audience.
One of his strongest styles is the use of lighting in each scene. In his movie Corpse Bride Burton used low key lighting in the town and Victoria’s castle to show how dull and unhappy everyone is. The effect of this technique makes the viewer feel gloomy and eerie about the environment, or as if something bad may happen next. Later on in that film Burton switches the lighting to high key lighting when all of the dead people are having fun and singing. The audience can see even though they are no longer living, they are having a fun life away from despair and unhappiness, because Burton made the scenery radiant. By using non diegetic and diegetic sounds Burton can help the audience experience the movie through another perspective. In his popular film, Edward Scissorhands starting off the movie in the opening credits he plays creepy and intense music to show that this film will be mysterious and unsettling yet light-hearted. Later on in the movie, Burton adds sound effects of scissors opening and closing as Edward struggles to eat with silverware. Using diegetic sound in that way creates tension and it is clear to anyone watching that Edward is not normal.
