I believe, the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 and the differences the northern and southern states' had about the abolishment slavery played a major role in why the civil war was fought. Abraham Lincoln thoughts about slavery and the state’s rights to avoid the abolishment of slavery were different. Abraham was an anti-slavery republican who believed slavery was bad for business and he did not want to see slavery spread to other parts of the United States. He was a strong believer that you could get more people to work for money vs working for free. The ideal of people being enslaved for work was not only cruel, but it also wasn’t benefiting America’s financial state. Although, Lincoln was personally against slavery, he never said he wanted …show more content…
The compromise of 1850 was that southern feared that if they were to admit California as a free state it would cause the congress to rally against them. California senator Henry Clay tried to convince them that if they make this compromise then it would label California as a free state and it would toughen the Fugitive Slave Act. The Fugitive Slave Act inspire northern protestor because it eliminated jury trails for alleged …show more content…
Having exhausted their legal and political options, they felt that the only way to protect them from this Northern assault was to no longer be a part of the United States of America. Although the Southern states seceded separately, without intending to form a new nation, they soon banded together in a loose coalition. Northerners, however, led by Abraham Lincoln, viewed secession as an illegal act. The Confederate States of America was not a new country; they felt, but a group of treasonous rebels.
Many southern were against having an anti-slavery republican in office. While on the other hand the other Southern thought that having a Republican in office would benefit them, because maybe he would see that their rights of being slaveholding state should not be abolished. Southern whites from the Deep South were furious with the fact that a Republican had won the presidency without the help from any southern
The Civil War was fought from April 12th 1861 to the spring of 1865 in the United States. During the civil war, 62,000 men died fighting in the civil war. It is known for being the most bloodiest war fought in the U.S. The question to this war is, how did it the Civil War start? What were the reason to go to battle and fight each other inside the U.S. The biggest concern about the Civil War was that the Union and the Confederacy had different views of seing how to run their side.
LOAD THE CANNONS! BOOM! BANG! CRACK! AHHH! MARCH! FIRE! BOOM! RETREAT! This is what you would probably here in the Civil War monthly. But why did we have a civil war? What is a civil War? Good Question. I'm here to answer them. But first let's talk about what it was. It was a war in the United States of America about the North and South. America was splitting up side vs side. The Union vs The Confederates. Now back to why everything got messed up and had a war and a half million lives lost. The United States of America had a Civil War because slavery, sectionalism, and disagreements about compromises.
The Compromise of 1850 had many upsides to it. Among them is that it made slave trade legal but slavery was not. Of course, there were mixed emotions about the whole situation. Also California was admitted to the Union which made a lot of people content. This benefitted the government in many ways such as creating a more unified society. The compromise made it so people did not have to fear for who they were. Especially if you were black in the North or South, but that would soon change in the South because of the hatred between the two races.
Abraham Lincoln freely expressed his hatred for slavery and it’s expansion to Northern states, but he wasn’t calling for immediate emancipation. Despite this, Southerners’ fears that slavery would soon be abolished by Republicans reached its peak after the presidential election. Southerners viewed the presidential election of Lincoln as a virtual referendum regarding slavery. The 1860 presidential election caused fear and paranoia amongst Southerners that slavery would quickly be eradicated entirely by Lincoln and the newly formed Republican party, which ultimately illustrates the influence the election had on the outbreak of the Civil War.
Before the civil war began slaves in the United States had neither rights nor liberties. This would be particularly true in most southern states. The movement of the civil rights began slightly before the civil war had ended. Written by President Lincoln the Emancipation Proclamation was a small but undoubtable first important step, towards giving African American slaves freedom. Aimed towards the states that seceded from the union and which still contained slavery, this document was meant to free those slaves. And in turn allow them to enroll in the union army. With this added strength to the union, the south had no choice but to surrender. Although slavery did not completely end, it did give them the liberty to fight towards the common goal of freedom.
In the 1800’s people wanted to end slavery, but people had different ideas of how to free them. Some wanted to take an aggressive action and others thought it would be better to be peaceful about it. The historical question states what was the most effective way to free slaves in the US before the civil war: nonviolence or more aggressive action. Some might disagree because they believe that if you don’t follow the 10 commandments then god will be upset. I believe that the most effective way to free slaves was to have a nonviolence action.
The North and South felt like it was necessary because they couldn’t come up with a civil solution. After the civil war in 1865 reconstruction was the national effort to reintegrate the north and south so they could work together as one nation without slavery.
Abraham Lincoln once said to George Robertson “‘Can we, as a nation, continue, together permanently—forever—half slave, and half free?’ The problem is too mighty for me. May God, in his mercy, superintend the solution.” (Hobson, 1912) This he wrote in a private letter in 1855. It was another year before Lincoln felt ready to think about saying the same thing in a way that would be really heard. He made his position clear September 18, 1858, stating “I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races,” going on to say that he opposed blacks having the right to vote, to serve on juries, to hold office and to intermarry with whites. (Mintz, S., & McNeil, 2016) The Civil War in the United States was inevitable. The great sectional differences between North and South were far too great, and the main reason for these differences was the fact that slavery underlay both the southern economy and society. No one, not even Abraham Lincoln could dispute the growing gap between the nation at that time.
First slavery was the main cause of the Civil war because it caused lots of tensions and division between the states.Everyone in the north didn't agree with slavery and wanted to abolish it and were free states,Everyone in the south was with slavery and didn't want it abolished this caused them to argue and tensions. The book uncle tom's cabin
The American Civil War may be one of the most significant wars to ever happen in the world. The war shaped the future of our country and developed one of the greatest sectional divisions within one country. The war altered all American life and society. Men, Women, and children were involved in the war to some extent. Although the war was devastating to the country at the time, it allowed for a sought out brighter future.
The election of Abraham Lincoln accompanied with the economic and social difference between Souths and north created a rift with in the states. The dissent grew between union opponents and confederates resulting in to deadly civil war. “It began with fanfare of bugles and patriotic oratory, with both sides promising that it would be over in ninety days” (Oates, 364). It miss estimated by both sides whereby plunged into in exorable war. Young folks streamed to recruiting centers from both sides influenced by fellow friends and fascinating military pride. Both sides were not prepared militarily to participate nor had the experienced professional soldiers. The attack of
The Compromise of 1850 had five laws regarding slavery and conflict between the north and south passed in September, 1850. The five laws that were passed include California being admitted as a free state, upholding the popular sovereignty in New Mexico and Utah, banning slave trade in Washington D.C. (because it doesn’t look good in the nation’s capital), fugitive slave act and, settling the Texas and New Mexico border dispute. This compromise allowed issues to get sorted out in a fair way. The north benefited by receiving California as a free state and no more slave trade in
California provoked the next stage of Compromises in Congress. The Compromise of 1850 was a five-part bill put forth by Henry Clay, it was composed of five key components. First, California had to submit to the Union as a free state. Then the remaining lands had to divide into two new territories. Excluding New Mexico and Utah. They would remain proslavery until they became states. Next, it would basically pacify anti-slavery northerners, slave auctions would be banned in Washington, DC but not slavery itself. It stated that Texas would also be compensated and be prohibited from influencing New Mexico any further with hopes of extending slavery there. Lastly, the government would create and enforce new and tougher Fugitive Slave Laws, this would also punish Northerners from helping slaves to escape. This law hoped to ensure both North and South would work together to protect the slave
“My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union…. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave, I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves, I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving the others alone, I would also do it.” Abraham Lincoln 1862. The American Civil War was fought between the North and South from 1861 to 1865 due to long time tension of moral, economic, and political differences. The War began shortly after the election of our sixteenth president Abraham Lincoln, who was known for his opposition on slavery. Seven southren states suceded and declared their independence from the United States to the Conferadate states. Many argue on the causes of the Civil War, was it moral, and the conversy about slavery. Or, was it political, between states rights vs. Union. Lastly, could it possibly be an economic difference between the North and the South that caused protest between them.
Southern Democrats wanted slavery to remain intact since it effected their ability to make a profit; slave labor allowed plantation owners to become wealthier since they did not have to pay their labor force. This plantation economy if allowed to enter into the new territories would help to generate wealth for anyone
