Class Struggle In Hamlet

Throughout history, class divisions have always been a big issue. Many works today display social inequality; however, to realize it, one has to look through the right lens. Literary critical lenses help to see a work from a different angle which leads to a better analysis of the composition. There are many different lenses and aspects in literature, and one of them is the Marxist Theory. Also known as the Conflict Theory, this idea claims that class struggle is a big divider in society. Although it is more of a cultural idea, this concept also applies to literature. In his play Hamlet, William Shakespeare clearly demonstrates the idea of class struggles; looking at this composition through the lens of the Marxist Theory, one uncovers that the powerful ones suppress and manipulates the others in an attempt to display their superiority. Class struggle is really obvious in Hamlet. The royals exploit and use the lower class in order to achieve their goals. People from the working class obey the Aristocrats commands and they do not have a big importance in their society. The Aristocrats notably Hamlet, Claudius and even Gertrude oppress others in order to get what they want and show that they are superior. Claudius kills his own brother and marries Gertrude in order to have a better chance to be king since she is the “the imperial jointress,” to the throne; he does not love Gertrude; he is using her to get the power (I.ii.9).
