In The House of the Seven Gables, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses the Maules’ witchcraft as a key to revenge on the Pyncheon family. Many Pyncheon generations later, they still believe they have control of the Maules because they ended up with the land. They possess a sense of entitlement because they believe they are becoming close to millionaires and the Pyncheon inheritors are willing to do anything to obtain the fortune. The Maules, however, have their secret legacy, guaranteeing them to receive not only the money, land, and house but also revenge for the years of superiority from the Pyncheon’s.

“Some said that he could look into people's minds; others, that, by the marvellous power of this eye, he could draw people into his own mind, or send them, if he pleased, to do errands to his grandfather, in the spiritual world; others, again, that it was what is termed an Evil Eye, and possessed the valuable faculty of blighting corn, and drying children into mummies with the heartburn.”(132) The Maules possess witchcraft in them, and Matthew uses it on Alice Pyncheon, Old Colonel Pyncheon’s granddaughter.
Gervayse Pyncheon, just like any other Pyncheon, shows greed over the deed and money. He brings in Matthew Maule to tell him where the deed was, as he once worked on the house when it went missing. He asks for Alice and he sends her to him because his will to give up anything to find the inheritance. Matthew ends up hypnotising Alice and turns her into his slave. Nathaniel Hawthorne is one of the greatest American authors of the nineteenth century. He published his first novel Fanshawe, in 1828. However, he is widely known for his novels The Scarlet Letter and The House of Seven Gables. His novel, The Scarlet Letter, can be analyzed from historical, psychological and feminist critical perspectives by examining his life from the past, as well as his reflections while writing The Scarlet Letter. In order to understand the book properly, it’s necessary to use these three perspectives.
The Dark Side of Judge Pyncheon in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Novel, The House of the Seven Gables
She realises that she has been living with a stranger, since the whole marriage is a charade to fulfil the expectations of Victorian society.
The timing for the presence of a make-believe house that never existed in the town of Georgia determined the destiny of a family of five. The protagonist and the protagonist are center for the actions of good and evil. Whether good or evil is used for a beneficial or evil ways, they both go hand in hand. In accordance to the grandmother, she used the form of good to manipulate a criminal into think that he had good left in him deep down. She also used the sense of goodness in her desperate time of need for survival when she was standing in her grave face to face with the Misfit. On the other hand, the Misfit commits such violent acts to survive and had the necessary necessities to prolong his life. He only acts in violence because it brings good to him a way. The Misfit who has no one and no family and las lost all sanity does what he has to do to be alive. The story has a foundation of family, the influence of manipulation, and good vs. evil. Which are the characteristics and the personality of the protagonist and the antagonist. In a way, the main characters play the role of god. The grandmother plays the role of a judge on who is “good” and who is “evil” she considers herself a good Christian and the Misfit is just Evil in his actions. The Misfit plays the role of god by taking innocent lives and thinking it is okay because he says the punishment and crime never match with the person committing it. He was punished for the killing of his father, which he did not commit. Humanity is destined to be flawed and is capable of both actions. Even though good is always within reach, so is evil at the same time. Both main characters were stripped with what they valued the most and were left alone with nothing. The Misfit was a social outcast on the run from the system and the Grandmother was left alone in a devastating state
It is as well, prudent to Martin to ask himself how severely he need or want the waterfront property before continuing with taking lawful activities. The “future home of the Tar Heel Family Resort” is in progress and the neighboring houses have as of now been torn down (Property Case Study). Eminent domain is normally consider as a state over its people, yet the rule can be taken to a much higher level…God over the nations, since it is God who created the earth and who owns it all. Nations are born and can cease to exist, empires rise and fall, but “The Most high God, possessor of heaven and earth is forever (Genesis 14:9 KJV). My general assessment to Martin would be for him to take the government full market compensation value for his coastal property, and make another investment in a different property. “Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future” (Proverbs 19:20
Nathaniel Hawthorne’s, The Scarlet Letter, is a novel that portrays the Christian beliefs of Original Sin. Much like Adam and Eve, Hester Prynne was a woman who was ostracized from society due to her relationship with Arthur Dimmesdale. Throughout her expulsion, Prynne gains sympathy for the poor, donating all of her income to help them. The sympathy that Prynne gained is similar to the knowledge that Adam and Eve gained about the good and evil in the world because in both stories, the characters gain knowledge as a result of their sin. Similarly to The Scarlet Letter, The House of the Seven Gables is based upon the Christian belief of Original Sin. Characters like Judge Pyncheon and Clifford suffered due to the sins of Colonel Pyncheon.
Witchcraft is a subject in American History that has kept historians intrigued for ages. Nevertheless, this volatile topic addresses many questions of how women are perceived during this hectic and forbidding time. A person did not have to be a murderer or a thief to be consumed with fear during this time. Unfortunately, fear could be present simply due to their jealous neighbor, or the fact that they had an abundance of land. The violence against women, and a few men, brought out anxiety for the confusions of events that could not be justified. “In 1656, few New Englanders would have been surprised to see a woman prosecuted-or even executed-for witchcraft.” Why did women distinguish themselves as inferior and how did they become the obvious targets for blame? Consequently, the motive for The Salem Witchcraft Hysteria predominately is placed on women due to their social status, inherited rights, whether past or future, and problems that surfaced in a society that needed rationalism.
The older gentleman uses his current state to get a better title to him. “You see before you, in blue jeans and misery, the wanderin’, exiled, trampled-on and sufferin’ rightful King of France” (Pg. 125). The Duke and King fake their titles to be in control of Jim and Huck and use them to their advantage. “If I never learnt nothing else out of pap, I learnt that the best way to get along with his kind of people is to let them have their own way,” (Pg. 126). Huck relates his dad to these men, proving that they are alike in their abusive ways.
The Pyncheon family has suffered much through the generations because of the curse on them and their house. Clifford Pyncheon was sentenced to 30 years in prison for killing his uncle. However, Clifford did not kill his uncle like the state thought. These 30 years in solitude made him bitter and unhappy, and rightfully so, but by the end of the book, his character transforms. Clifford Pyncheon has a significant change in his personality, brought on by being free from prison, free from the house of seven gables, and free from the family curse.
Another example that indicates hypocrisy in the civilized society in the novel is the biased punishment of crimes according to the society’s rules and regulations. This is shown by the non-judgment of the Duke and the King regardless of the fraudulent schemes that both con artists involved in the community. Huck and Jim rescue the Duke and the King and offer them their raft. The first scheme begins when both criminals present fake identities to Huck and Jim. The Duke introduces himself as the English Duke’s son, also known as the Duke of Bridgewater whereas the King presents himself as the Lost Dauphin as well as Louis XVI’s son and France’s designated King (Twain, 144-145). Additionally, one of the con artists, the Duke, takes advantage of Jim’s race and position as a runway slave and prints leaflets that offer $200 reward to any person that manages to catch the runaway slave. The Duke is
Challenges and changes are a part of life. Many people, especially elderly who have set views can very easily resent changes and anything that can be seen as a challenge to their ideas and the tines they remember. Magic has always been part of life but sometimes the magic life takes on a maliciois spirit when manipulated by those who seek to bring about ruin. Society is built on traditions and revolutions to challenge others. These seemingly unconnected ideas come together in the character of Holgrave ans the plot of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel The House of the Seven Gables. Holgrave works as a force of change and challenges conceptions through his profession as a daguerreotypist. But at the same time his ideas ans actions are based on
The House of The Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne chronicles the generations of a Puritan family and the curse which haunts their fates. Although the Pyncheons are a respected family in their small Massachusetts town, their past is riddled with secrets, mysterious deaths, and the curse of a dying man. Few in the family ever believed in the curse, giving the generational disasters of the family the name of coincidental misfortunes, the simple results of human action. And, while the author attempts to explain away these coincidences with logic and science, he also conveys mysterious hints as to the supernatural phenomena existing within the house of the seven gables. Because of the secrecy surrounding the story, we, as readers, are
The House of the Seven Gables is a metaphorical, symbolic, and romantic. The house and the characters are all symbols for something greater and can be linked back to society. These symbols still have influence today, because the problems the Pyncheon family faced still goes on today. That problem that plagued the family for generation is greed.
A horrible epiphany of the truth about the plantation strikes the grandmother which then leads her family and herself to a mishap. It is significant that the story reveals how nowadays, circumstances are getting worse because before, everything was fine and this produces a positive effect to the young characters such as the grandchildren. Having said that, this is also the reason why they get into a misadventure where they encounter their vicious murderers.
