Government is not reason; it is not eloquence; it is force! Like fire, it is a dangerous servant, and a fearful master.” -George Washington George Washington was an important citizen in the time of Colonial Williamsburg. Colonial Williamsburg has many famous buildings such as The Magazine, The Governor’s Palace, and Bruton Parish Church. But, out of all of them, the Capitol Building should receive the 2016 Colonial Williamsburg commemorative coin because it is the oldest body in Parliament in Virginia, it still swears in citizens today, and it has changed our government system forever. One reason the Capitol Building should receive the commemorative coin is because of its historical significance. It was the oldest body of Parliament
Thomas Paine begins Common Sense with the idea that government and society have different means and are often confused with each other. He states that “society is produced by our wants”, it is positive by “uniting our affections”, it “encourages intercourse”, and is a “patron” (Paine). Paine describes government as begin the opposite. He describes government as being produced by “our wickedness”, it promotes “negatively by restraining our vices”, “creates distensions, and government is a “punisher” (Paine). In conclusion to this, he describes government as “a necessary evil” (Paine).
The design of the Washington Monument is a common obelisk and can be found around the world. Its history begins in Egypt. There were a great many obelisks in Egypt, 13 were originally in Karnak where now only 5 stand. Possibly the best known obelisk in Egypt is at the Temple of Luxor in Thebe. This obelisk was raised by Ramses II. He is credited with raising over fourteen obelisks at Tanis alone. The obelisk at the Temple of Luxor was originally one of a pair of obelisks. This missing obelisks was later removed and brought to Paris where it stands in the Place de la Concorde.
“I think government is the worker that works for the people who tell them what they want them to do by the way they vote at the election poll. I don’t like it when people in the congress don’t do what the constitution said.”
The responsibilities of government are to protect its citizens by such means as our armed services or military weapons. Government is to ensure there is a way of fairly maintaining order as an example our police, National Guard, and to ensure every citizen has equal access to items, products, goods such as schools, and highways. However, government or politics often has a negative connotation too many as it is viewed as a way for lobbyists and those with money to make policies that are important or in some way helpful to them. Many view politics as dishonest and that politics is a manner in which someone or group benefits for their own advantage and not for society as a
The government’s role for the people is to challenge them like how contestants from “The Amazing Race” or “Fear Factor” are challenged. Government should be like a reality competition show filled with adventure and danger (Amazing Race, 2003) (Fear Factor, 2005). Just like the government in “The Hunger Games” (Collins, 2008). People should compete for rights and liberties. The competitions can be held under the government’s supervision. These competitions can involve multiple life daring tasks and only the ones that survive win. The losers or the ones not so fortunate die in the process, a true fight to the death. Government works from a federal standpoint and does not get involved in local affairs.
Colonial Williamsburg is a massive importance of Virginia, but some of the important buildings are Bruton-Parish Church, Capitol, Governor’s Palace, and Magazine. The holder of ammunition deserves a commemorative coin because of its importance during Colonial times, value today, and its connection with “that the future may learn from the past.”
A government, by definition, is the governing body of a nation, state, or community. Those that work within the government conduct the policy, actions, and affairs of a state, organization, or people. By the United States government is divided into three branches, executive, judicial, and legislative, much every aspect of governing the nation falls under that umbrella. Since the forming of the United States government in 1789, those who govern the country have been held accountable for all actions that go on within the nation. Within this constitutional republic, when the nation faces a crisis of any kind, epidemic, pandemic, or act of terrorism, there is usually a call for government intervention. There’s even governments set up at the state and local level in the form of governors, mayors, local and state law enforcement, etc. Very rarely are all parts of the U.S. national government forced to work hand-in-hand. Yet, on April 15, 2013, a very rare occasion had occurred, an act of foreign terrorism on U.S. soil, the Boston Bombings.
Governments need to have rules, laws and regulations so they have control over the people, but too much control can be oppressive to society. Government control should be equal to the rights of the people; having too much control conflicts with the rights of the people and their life, liberty and happiness. There are arguments to both sides of governing power and it’s effect on society, but one thing is certain, and facts show that an overpowering government can lead to adverse effects on the people. In “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, it is evident that an overpowering government can lead to a lack of freedom and place little to no value on one’s life.
The contractor of the Capitol (Henry Cary) built the College of William and Mary’s Wren Building, which was the interim home of the Capitol. The Capitol building was the home of the House of Burgesses and the General Court. On May 15, 1776, at the Capitol, the center of major Virginian government, the first colony communicated independence. Currently, the Capitol hosts the Annual Naturalization Ceremony, in which immigrants can become U.S. citizens. In connection to the motto, “That the future may learn from the past”, the United States government represents a similar government as the form of government practiced at the Capitol. The 2016 Colonial Williamsburg Commemorative Coin rightfully belongs to the Capitol Building because of the importance during the Revolutionary period, the relevance to citizens today, and the connection to the Colonial Williamsburg motto.
In honor of Lincoln’s 150th anniversary, the makers of the penny decided to put the Lincoln Memorial on the back of the penny.
There are many notable pieces of architecture from Virginia’s past. Among these are the Governor’s Palace, Gunpowder Magazine, Capitol, and Bruton Parish Church. The Williamsburg Foundation will make a commemorative coin honoring one of these historical structures. All of these buildings were important, but the most relevant, historically influential, and related to Williamsburg’s vision statement is the Capitol. The Capitol should be commemorated by the Williamsburg Foundation.
The Burgesses resolved to build the first American structure, the Capitol on May 18, 1699 by Henry Cary. Later on, Patrick Henry gave his Caesar-Brutus speech against the Stamp Act on May 29, 1765. In addition, it is where the Burgesses, along with the Governor's council met and is one of the oldest buildings in Colonial Williamsburg. Along with this, a Commemorative Coin was made for this building to show its importance to citizens in colonial times, citizens today, and its great connection to the motto, “That the future may learn from the past”. The two coins showed represent this building and its importance. The front side of the coin (Left) shows the Capitol building and the current year, 2016. The back side of the coin (Right) says to
Which one, the dollar metal coin or the dollar paper bill? Is one form of the dollar better sufficient for the environment? Billions of coins and bills are used every day in the U.S and the production of this system of money is generating risks to the environment. The coin and the bill have different attributions to the environment, the cycle to produce a single coin/bill requires various materials and processes. The one dollar metal coin is “greener” than a one dollar paper bill, the dollar coin is fitter for the economy and the environment as the coin has several advantages over the dollar bill. The coin benefits more the environment as it damages less and last more than a bill. The average dollar coin would stay in circulation for 30 years,
