In one of William Shakespeare's many famous plays, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, the title can be deceiving. It is a popular opinion that Marcus Brutus was the real tragic hero of the story. Tragic heroes and assassination are a common theme in Shakespeare’s plays and, in 2016, it’s a common theme in the news. Berta Caceres of Honduras is an excellent example of both themes. Berta Caceres was an environmental activist and co-founder of the Council of Indigenous People of Honduras (Copinh). She is well known for being against dams, illegal logging, and plantations. Berta was a high profile, Indigenous, environmental and human rights-activist which is very risky to be Honduras. Between 2010 and 2014, 101 campaigner were killed in Honduras. …show more content…
She had moved back to her home in La Esperanza because she thought it’d be safer but she was dead wrong. Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, an international indigenous activist, noted that the Honduran president, Juan Orlando Hernandez, was supposed to protect her. “[. . .] she was assassinated just like that. If someone like her suffers in this way, then what chance is there for others who campaign for the environment and human rights,” says Tauli-Corpuz. Security forces still haven’t stated why she didn’t have any protection that fateful night. Killed in her own home at around one in the morning, it’s unknown how many people participated with report statements varying from two assailants to eleven. Although it’s unclear how many people were there, Berta was hit by at least four bullets. The invaders did leave a witness, Mexican activist Gustavo Castro Soto. Seeing that she was murdered barely a week after being threatened for opposing hydroelectric projects. “I have no doubt that she has been killed because of her struggle and that soldiers and people from the dam are responsible, I …show more content…
Completely loyal to his country he was tricked by Cassius and killed Caesar under the belief it was the best thing to do for the citizens of Rome. Berta Caceres held many campaigns to help indigenous people and the environment of Honduras but she never killed anyone in the name of her cause. Instead, she was the one who was killed. In a sense her and Caesar are both the tragic heroes of their stories but she’s also similar to Brutus and how loyal she is to her beliefs. Another similarity between Shakespeare’s play and Berta’s reality is that a group was involved in the murder. In Berta’s case it is unknown how many participated and if they were conspirators or hitmen. If they were conspirators they were mostly likely from dam companies or plantations. A year earlier she’d been awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize for opposing one of the biggest hydropower projects in Central America. If the assassinators were hitmen they were most likely either hired by the government or the dam or plantation companies. Either way they certainly weren’t her friends or colleagues because she was loved throughout Honduras. Riots began after her death, much like the riot that grew after Antony’s powerful speech about Caesar’s

The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare is a tale not completely focused on Julius Caesar himself. But is instead focused more on the conspirators that surrounded him. Julius Caesar is unwilling to believe several warnings that could have saved his life, Julius Caesar ends up being murdered after ignoring all of the warnings, everyone has a different view of Julius Caesar. A tragic hero is a character of high standing in society that has a flaw that leads to their downfall and must feel enlightened in the end. Julius Caesar is a tragic hero.
The tragedy of Julius Caesar is a story of struggle and betrayal; however, in it, Shakespeare conveys messages about human nature. Three of the main characters in the play convey the ways that power corrupts and changes people. Brutus’ attitude towards killing Caesar and rising to power, along with his personality, change throughout the first three acts. Cassius’ need for power makes him lose himself and his humanity. Mark Antony, changed by Caesar's death, rises to power after taking it away from those that killed him. In Shakespeare’s play, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, he conveys notions regarding human nature and the ways that power changes and corrupts people; he does this through his characters Brutus, Cassius, and Antony.
In Scene 2, Act 3, Brutus and Antony both separately tell a speech about Caesar’s death and why it happened. Both are trying to sway the people in their favor, Brutus saying it was necessary while Antony explaining it was murder. Both uses pathos and ethos, their own reputations, to win the people over. Brutus, however, loses to Antony. Antony persuasive speech was more on the side of pathos than Brutus, leading to Brutus’s downfall.
William Shakespeare focuses the play on Brutus’s choices even after the assassination of Caesar. The first bad decision of Brutus was trusting the conspirators, which shows his bad judge of character. This was bad because their intentions for killing Caesar were not for justice. It was only because they were jealous of Caesar and his leadership. They did not like the possibility of Caesar becoming the ruler of Rome. Brutus was the only one who did not kill him out of jealousy, which Antony realizes towards the end of the play when he states, “ This was the noblest Roman of them all. All the rest of the conspirators acted out of jealousy of great Caesar.” (5.5.73-75) Another bad choice Brutus made was letting Antony speak at Caesar’s funeral. Antony was going to tell the truth about everything. Before the funeral Antony tells Octavius’s servant, “There I’ll use my speech to test what the people think of these bloody men’s cruel action..” (3.1.307-309) Antony must have been the most angry about Caesar being gone. It’s not surprising for him to be wanting to tell everyone the
Well, honor is the subject of my story. I cannot tell you what other men Think of this life, but for my single self, I had as lief not be, as live to be In awe of such a thing as myself” (1.2.90-96.). Brutus goes through with killing Caesar, but talks the men out of killing Mark Antony out of the belief he has done nothing wrong. Caesar believes he has done the correct thing and has saved the people of Rome from a corrupt leader, and he performs a speech to the people of Rome explaining his actions and why he murdered Caesar. This leads to his downfall in the end, because the act of not killing Mark Antony creates a war that is order to kill Cassius and Brutus.
A tragic hero tries to do the right thing but has flaws in their character that prevents them from being a true hero. Scholars argue over whether Brutus or Caesar is the tragic hero in the play Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare. Both men have tragic flaws which cause their downfall. They are both ambitious. Caesar wanted all the power to himself. On the contrary, Brutus wanted what was best for Rome and to keep a good reputation. Brutus is the tragic hero of the play since he falls the farthest due to the fact that he is too trusting of everyone, he naively allows his enemy to speak out about him, and he lacks self confidence.
Hernandez’s trait of courage is represented by her feeling fear yet choosing to act, her following her heart, and her standing up for what she believes in. By trying to expose murderers, Hernandez was often on hit list and was often threatened by many people. Even though she was fearful she still choose to fight for what she believed was right. The play, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, by William Shakespeare, has two main tragic heroes. Set in Rome and spanning from forty- four to forty-two B.C., the play tells of Brutus and Caesar whom both fall from the highest positions to the lowest of misfortune and then are enlightened on their mistakes. Brutus is the stronger example of a tragic hero in this story. Throughout this play, Brutus commits many faults, falls more drastically than all other characters, and regrets his previous actions by the end of the play.

The Ides of March mean much more than March 15th, it was also the day Julius Caesar, the Roman general and leader was killed. Although this day is not a holiday, we should take time to think of things Caesar didn’t on this fateful day. In “Julius Caesar,” by William Shakespeare, Caesar that morning solidified his place as a tragic hero because of his tremendous fatal flaw. Aristotle once defined the tragic hero as a person of noble or influential birth, who has a moral personality. The tragic hero also must have one hamartia, which is a fatal flaw. This fatal flaw is the cause of the person's downfall. This also means that it is a noble person, and it is one part of their
