Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne were American writers who are said to belong to the Dark Romanticism. This literary subgenre of Romanticism is featured by the representation of individuals as prone to sin and self-destruction. It does not deal with man as innate perfect creatures who are devine and full of wisdom. Moreover, it sees nature not as divine, but sinister. The natural word is dark, decaying and mysterious. In my opinion, The Masque of the Red Death and Young Goodman Brown are great examples of Dark Romanticism.

In the case of The Masque of the Red Death, the “dark” force that torments Prince Prospero and his guests is a curious and obscure figure. This figure is not invited to the masque ball, however, it can penetrate the abbey and move among the guests. This figure might be seen as “Death” or specifically the “Red Death.” This figure appears in a dark, blood-splattered robe resembling a funeral shroud. The figure's mask resembles the rigid face of a corpse and exhibits the traits of the Red Death, once it is removed it is discovered there is nothing underneath. Then, it comes the realization that the figure is the Red Death itself," and Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all.” Whether it was the Red Death or Death itself, the message is that Prospero could never escape death, no matter his richness and the material protection around him. Death is inevitable; it can be caused either by disease or old age, but it will reach all. Additionally, it can be seen as a divine punishment for him and his revelers who selfishly gather and leave the rest of the people outside the abbay. The abbey with its iron gates might represent Prospero’s mistake and blindness by building a place with no …show more content…
Taking into account Hawthorn’s religion, Puritanism, the forest was the devil’s domain, that is the reason why Young Goodman Brown is surprised at the appearance of some of Salem’s respectable members and does not want to be seen with that old man. The Devil appears to be an ordinary man wearing decent clothes and appears to be like any other man in Salem. He wants Young Goodman to attend to a ceremony in the forests, and although Young Goodman does not attend the ceremony, he sees people he thought to be honorable and lose his faith. Evil’s physical appearance may mean that there is evil in everybody, and that is why it is easy for the Evil to tempt human beings. As Hawthorne wrote “Evil is the nature of
Dark Romanticism is a literary subgenre which emphasizes on a sinful side of a human; the authors who followed this movement were interested in psychology and morality. Edgar Allan Poe, who was strongly interested in self-destructive human nature, and Herman Melville, whose themes of mystery and madness are also very remarkable, were other famous representatives of this literary movement. Sometimes Dark Romanticism is said to be close to the Transcendentalism literary movement, though they are quite different. Transcendentalism
Everyone fears their own death, thus why some people will do anything to escape it. In Edgar Allan Poe's short story, “The Masque of the Red Death”, this fear is experienced by all. In the story, a prince named Prospero and his people try to elude the Red Death through seclusion and isolation in the prince's abbey. However, no walls can stop death since it is unavoidable and inescapable. Throughout the story, Poe uses symbols such as the rooms, the masked figure, and the clock to convey the theme that no one can escape death.
“The Masque of the Red Death,” a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, tells the story of Prince Prospero and his futile attempts to prevent death. During his masquerade party, the prince notices an unusual figure, dressed as the Red Death, and, enraged at the sight of it, Prospero tries to kill it. Poe uses the seventh room, the ebony clock, and the Red Death itself as symbols of death throughout his story.
Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allen Poe were extremely successful gothic or dark romantic authors of the 19th century. The two authors wrote a plethora of short stories that strayed from the rationalist styles of the 18th century and paved the way for other dark romantic authors. Romanticism focuses on emotions and nature while rationalism focuses on logic and reasoning. Hawthorne and Poe display the darker side of human nature throughout all of their works. Three especially good examples of this particular style are Hawthorne’s “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment” as well as Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Black Cat.”
Edgar Allan Poe was a brilliant poet who endured an incredibly harrowing life. It seemed as if everyone he became close to would decease before his eyes. His grim life served as inspiration for his work which take on eerie, nightmarish tones and themes, likely because those disturbing subjects are what he knew best. One of his poems greatly influenced by his life was “The Masque of the Red Death”. Some parts of the poem influenced by his life are Prince Prospero, the red death, and the theme of the inevitability of death.
Death is a terrifying prospect for most people , imagine being face to face with it. In Edgar Allan Poe’s “Masque of the Red Death”, the revelers were in this very situation. Prince Pospero’s country was devastated by the Red Death. A plaque that resulted in a painful, gruesome, death. Prince Pospero being the selfish uncaring man he is, locked himself and a thousand of his lighthearted friends in his abbey to hide from the Red Death. After 6 months of seclusion Prince Pospero throws a masquerade to celebrate that they were still free of the Red Death. It was at this masquerade a gruesome mummer appeared shortly before Prince Pospero and all the revelers to died of the Read Death. In this story Poe personifies death through the mummer who
In both of the short stories The Devil and Tom Walker by Washington Irving, also The Murders in the Rue Morgue by Edgar Allan Poe, were written in the romantic time period. Romanticism typically contains the ideals of nature worship, nature imagery, as well as nature having a healing effect. Gothic Literature stemmed off of romantic literature which leads to many of the contradictory ideas in both. An example could be that romantics saw imagination while gothic writers saw the darkness in the supernatural. Both the authors used very similar elements to make each literary work different but strong in their own way.
“The Masque of the Red Death” has a symbolic expression to the story. It featured a set of familiar symbols whose meanings combined to send a message. This allegory operated on two levels of meaning: 1) the literal elements of the plot; for example the color of the room and 2) their symbolic counterparts that involved philosophical concepts for example life and death. The story could have been read by the reader as an allegory
“The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe is an example of Dark Romanticism. This poem is a form of Dark Romanticism because it depicts what can happen to some people if you push them to their limit, they may resort to madness. It also shows the evil side of people and the sins they can commit while in their state of madness. These are just some of characteristics of Dark Romanticism.
The “Masque of the Red Death,” written by Edgar Allan Poe yields a pragmatical ending in which is represented in everyday life. The intent of the ending was to depict and illustrate of how one cannot seek liberation from the impending death which bestows all. The ending primarily begins when the presence of the Red Death becomes personified in which the figure travels among the seven colored rooms, from blue to purple to green to orange to white and finally violet. Moreover, the despair in which the host of the party, Prince Prospero, had felt urged him to confront the Red Death but fell to his inexcusable demise. As the prince fell to his knees, the revellers suddenly gathered enough courage in order to once again to defy the Red Death but soon death had also opened the doors to their souls.
“ At each lapse of the hour, the musicians of the orchestra were constrained to pause, momentarily, in their performance, to hearken to the sound, and thus the waltzers perforce ceased their evolutions.” The musicians, Prince Prospero, and his friends stopped their instruments and dancing. Another concept in “The Masque of the Red Death” is the setting. There are seven rooms each a different color. This is a symbol of life to death.
At any giving point even the most respectable person can give into temptation and do things that are not right. “Goodman Brown, and bearing a considerable resemblance to him...they might have been taken for father and son” (Hawthorne 2). The mystery man that Goodman Brown meets up with in the forest is the devil and Brown is being compared to him. The author establishes a connection between the narrator and the devil or a common person and evil. The author attempts to show the reader that anybody can be overpowered by evil at some point, anybody who may seem to be a good person may in fact be a very evil person. The author reinforces the idea that people are not who they say they are.
Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) born in the United States was a poet, writer, critic, and journalist recognized as one of the greatest exponents of the Dark Romanticism (Ultan and Olson, 51). Dark Romanticism is an American literary subgenre emerged in the nineteenth century from the philosophical movement called transcendentalism. Dark Romanticism, broadly speaking, rely very little on perfection as an innate quality of the human being, a key idea of the transcendentalists (Howard, 1).
