Compare and contrast the Aztec civilization and the Mayan civilization.

Throughout the humanities course, I have been intrigued by a vast amount of information on different cultures. However, there was a particular section that truly caught my attention, and has piqued an interest in me that has caused me to do my own research aside from this paper. The culture of the Mayas, and the Aztecs has been extremely fundamental in understanding my ancestry, being that I am Mexican American. I took an interest in their beautiful architecture, their ritualistic and sacrificial religious practices, as well as their history and how they began. Throughout this paper I will outline the similarities and differences of these two cultures, as well as articulate an understanding of the humanity disciplines outlined above.

The Aztecs were a remarkable civilization. Th is civilization were distrusted and disliked because they tended to push others out of their way. They ruled an empire in Tenochtitlan in the time of 1350 to 1519. They also were known for their agriculture and human sacrifices. Agriculture was a very important part of their h istory because without their farming method the Aztec couldn't have created such great civilization. It was clear through the human sacrifice that the Aztecs practiced that they had no regard for the quality of human life and did it for the benefit of their society. First of all, they would kill thousands of people at a time, and then they ate the arms, thighs, and heads leaving the bodies to feed to the wild animals (Document G). This shows that the Aztecs did not care about the people that they were killing, only about sacrificing to the gods. Secondly, many say that the Aztecs sacrificed human beings for the sole purpose of pleasing the gods. The Maya, Aztec, and Inca civilizations were really smart in topics of engineering, writing, agriculture and astronomy. Also all three had their beliefs, and good with agriculture. All three cultures used great technologies in their agriculture like slash and burn, terrace farming. They all hunted for religion, they had a huge belief with the people spread throughout each region. They all had a lot of interest in the use of chocolate in the region, and cultivation. They all were pretty much the same just different beliefs.

They did not have a set military hierarchy, they just picked who they thought was best for the job at that time. Expansion was the cornerstone of the Aztec civilization, because their religion demanded that a large number of human sacrifices be made to the gods. To get these sacrifices the Aztec went to war with other tribes; in this way they captured more slaves for sacrifices and also more land to add to their empire. The Aztec was a strong civilization who had specialized war chiefs and an organized system for amassing large armies in a short time.

The Aztec and Mayan civilizations were two important, early civilizations that settled in Mesoamerica. The Mayan and Aztecs were two civilizations that lived in two different time periods, but they shared many physical and mental characteristics of one another. The Aztec and Mayan civilizations were different but they were more similar. The Aztecs and Mayans were more similar in their location, religion, writing system, government, social structure, gender roles, technology, and sporting activities.

Religion was the foundation for the infamous culture of the Aztec Civilization. Through ceremonies of sacrifice, and the infusion of cosmology into their religion, the Aztecs sculpted a culture unlike that of any other civilization, and left behind a legacy to be studied and admired for generations to come. Religion ultimately shaped the unique civilization of the Aztecs, through cultivating the general outlook and values of the Aztecs, expanding the empire, and influencing the architecture and layout of their city.

Mayan and Egyptian civilizations had much in common but also many things differ in their cultures. The Mayan began to evolve around 1200 B.C. to 400 B.C. while the Egyptian civilization began unknowingly but it’s kingdom at one point split but reunited in 3000 B.C. The two civilizations lived in locations which were similar but different, the Mayas came from South America and Egyptians from the area of the Nile. The social structures of these civilizations gave a great advancement in astronomy, mathematics, architecture and writing, all which these civilizations were advanced and also excelled in. Both civilizations of the Maya and Egyptian were know as powerful empires in their time but their set on social structure is what led to smart thinking and conquering.

Aztecs were ruled by an emperor known as the Huey Tlatcani, the great speaker, which had absolute power. The Huey Tlatcani was believed to have been a representative of the gods, and was worshiped as a god. The Aztec empire was made up of many city-states that were ruled by a supreme ruler and a supreme judge. City-states were politically independent, yet had to worship the emperor and pay tributes. They were a structured society with a strict caste system divided into two social classes. At the top were the hereditary nobles, priests and high ranking warriors. At the bottom were the commoners, the serfs, indentured servants and slaves. Within these classes they also had social rankings. (History.com).

The Mayan and Egyptian cultures, both had very similar ideas but had many differences. The Mayan civilization fell to the ground by the will of themselves collapsing. On the other hand, the Egyptian empire was taken over and fell to the Romans. The Egyptian civilization lasted for more than thousands of years, but the Mayan only lasted for a couple of thousand
