These works cover a multitude of subjects and come in many platforms. Some works often incorporate more than one theme so that the story can be more diverse and complex. One of the most common themes that are present in British literature is goods triumph over evil. This theme, however, is not limited to just British literature; due to its frequent and widespread use, it is considered a universal theme. According to author, Richard Bodek, in Beowulf the theme for goods triumph over evil is paramount throughout the entire story. However, is the theme used in a Christian interpretation with pagan influences or is it more of a pagan rendering with Christian overlay? In the story, Beowulf claims, after he defeats Grendel, that he could only do it with the aid of God. He also claims that he is doing God’s will by ridding the world of the monsters that are Grendel and his mother. This represents a Christian base with major pagan influences (Bodek). In the essay, The Symbol of Good Is Used in Both Grendel and Beowulf, Beowulf’s character is compared to God and Beowulf himself acts as his champion. Because of this, Beowulf is made out to be the good hero. Beowulf is considered the Christian ideal of a good and noble hero. He uses God as his strength to help him through trials. Beowulf is even compared to Jesus Christ, though it is never made directly in the text. Beowulf kills the monster Grendel, but because of the overlay of Christian principles, it could be that Grendel represents sin. Beowulf defeats sin, the same as Jesus Christ defeated sin
