Does living a life in the wilderness bring betterment to people’s lives? According to Christopher McCandless and Henry Thoreau, it really did. In the book, Into The Wild, by Jon Krakauer, the author tells the story of young Christopher J. McCandless who seemingly decides one day to give away his savings to charity, pack up his car, and leave his home and family for a life of wandering and adventure. His story ends with his eventual death in the Alaskan Yukon, but Krakauer goes into what may have caused him to do such a thing and how those who’s lives the young man touched felt about his death. Multiple parallels can be seen between McCandless and author Henry Thoreau. Among McCandless’ possessions found with his body in August of 1992, was
Imagine being stuck in the wild, on the verge of dying from either starvation or freezing to death. There are not enough resources, not enough food, all you have left is to hope. Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, is a story written of a man named Chris McCandless who overall did not like his life. He thought society corrupted his dreams that he previously set, and he wanted to get away from all of societies norms. Chris wanted to achieve his dream, he wanted a “thrill” in his life, so, Chris decided to go out into the wild and be a free man. In the process he left behind his family who worried everyday having no notion of his whereabouts. Chris was without a doubt , a very controversial/confusing person. People who have heard his story have reason to believe that he was a foolish, stupid kid who got lost into the wild and got himself killed. However, due to Chris' grit, his ability to look deep inside himself to bring out the real him, and his love of nature are all exceptional. Chris' journey into the threatening Alaskan wilderness was not one of stupidity, but one of self determination and courageousness.
The movie Winter in the Blood, was made 38 years after the novel was first published and was not directed by the author, James Welch. This among many reasons may explain some of the noticeable differences between the movie and text. Although the basic plot in the movie stays true to that of the book there was some added “Hollywood magic” to make it more viewable on the big screen. The book, Winter in the Blood portrays the grandmother as grouchy and simple while the movie Winter in the Blood depicts her as the stereotypical wise, gentle, and nurturing Indian grandmother. The movie’s depiction of the grandmother is done to convey a better relationship between her and the narrator which makes viewers feel more connected and sympathetic for

Jack London brings a natural instinct into the spotlight by defining that everyone has that primal call to the wild, and often one feels this when in a difficult situation. Giving into this ‘call of the wild’ leads to a different kind of adaptation, it makes you become primal to survive in a primal situation. Further into the book it states, “The others sat down and howled. And now the call came to Buck in unmistakable accents. He, too, sad down and howled.” (London, 1990, p.62). This is the defining moment of Jack’s book when Buck lets go of all ties to humans and decides to carve his own path, adapting the way he needs to, not the way that humans encouraged him. Soon, Buck changes himself completely to fit snugly into the environment and to prevent further torturous struggles with humans. These quotes combine to paint a picture of total and complete change when it comes to a new and unfavorable environment.
This year’s summer reading options were marvelous. It was a hard choice to choose what book to read, but in the end, I chose The Call of the Wild by Jack London. The Call of the Wild was an adventurous tale about a dog named Buck and his adventures as he was sold into a harsh life of relentless labor in the cold and brutal North. The author of this classic novel, Jack London, was a short-story writer and a prolific American novelist. He was born in San Francisco, California. He was known for his other novels, The Sea Wolf and White Fang. I chose this particular novel because I love reading classic novels and it seemed to be an interesting and exciting story. Finally, this was the novel of my choice because it was recommended to me by my grandma.

In The beginning of the movie i realized that he probably wouldn’t have survived in the first place because he didn’t have no knowledge of what he was really doing. If christopher had experience of going into the wild he probably would have done better.
