Comparing Confucianism And Daoism

Confucianism and Daoism have influenced China for many centuries with conflicting and agreeing ideas. Confucianism consist of the very famous texts called “The Analects” and one very famously known as ‘Mengzi” named after its writer. Similarly, the Daoists also have important text, such as the “Daodejing” which are compartmentalized into different sections. Differing in texts is a minimal distinction; Confucianism and Daoism differ in what their main concepts are. First, Confucianism focused on filial piety and benevolence (Poceski 2009: pg. 43). Kong Fuzi was very concerned with how one presented his or herself to the public due to geomancy. One also had to respect one’s elders in order to promote social hierarchy, which meant it would essentially keep the entire universe in order. Furthermore, Kong Fuzi believed that if social order were to be perfected then it would mimic that of the Dao, putting one closer to Heaven (Poceski 2009: pg. 43). Following xiào is also known to bring success to one’s family; therefore it should be followed (Mengzi: 118). 69). In the Daodejing, a concept that is referenced to a lot is wuwei, meaning non-action. Daoism promotes a lot of naturalistic and spontaneous behavior, which flows with the nature of things. If one flows with nature one does not take control of things or get ranked for status, this is wuwei taking action (Ivanhoe: pg. 159). This also takes away ritualistic habits from society like those in Confucianism, and it brings more harmony to the world (Poceski 2009: pg. 67).
