An Analysis of the Avoidable Fates of Oedipus and Hamlet

Hamlet and Oedipus Rex are two epic dramas written by William Shakespeare and Sophocles respectively. Through these stories, Shakespeare and Sophocles tell the tales of two tragic heroes with numerous similarities. Hamlet and Oedipus are brave, courageous and noble heroes who met unfortunate and catastrophic fates. Hamlet met his demise in an attempt to avenge his father’s brutal murder and humiliation; Oedipus willingly falls from glory as he tries to redeem himself from his mistakes. Although many agree that neither hero deserved his fate, upon analyzing the plots of the two epic dramas, one is forced conclude that Hamlet’s and Oedipus’ actions were rash and unnecessary, and that they …show more content…

When the King and Queen appear to be greatly disturbed by the play, Hamlet decides that the two are guilty, and that he must kill Claudius and torment Gertrude with guilt. Today, almost anyone would agree that one’s facial expressions upon watching a play would not provide sufficient evidence to incriminate someone; however, Hamlet irrationally bases his decision to kill his uncle and traumatize his mother upon this “evidence”. Ultimately, it is this irrational thinking that leads to the deaths of multiple characters, including his own. While Shakespeare emphasizes the importance of rational thinking through, Hamlet’s death, Sophocles also explores this topic through Oedipus Rex. Like Hamlet, Oedipus too reaches his demise as a result of rash thinking. The play begins with the citizens of Thebes begging Oedipus to save them from the plague that has killed many. When Creon brings the news that the Oracle at Delphi claimed that Gods cursed the city of Thebes with the plague due to the unavenged murder of the Old King Laius, Oedipus is quick to proclaim the following,
“I solemnly forbid the people of this country,
Where power and throne are mine, ever to receive that
