Irony in The Yellow Wallpaper and The Story of an Hour Charlotte Gilman and Kate Chopin were contemporary authors who were a product of their times. They wrote during the abolitionist movement, during the times when the gender roles were clearly defined and where women were given their specific roles and given a space within which they were expected to live and perform their duties. Although they had their freedom, the women of that time, especially white women in the upper middle class society were not completely free. Their position in the society and standing in their social circles was entirely dependent on their husband and in a way they were trapped in their marriage, slaves to the customs of the time. Both the women in the stories are not fragile but are made to behave like they are and this forced rest that they are made to have makes them psychologically ill. The dependence that they are subjected to makes them fight against it even when they know it is futile. Their fight is also not a literal fight, for they do not say anything but do things that they were not supposed to do. Their problem lies not only with their husbands but also with the society at large and the other female characters in the stories. the sister and the sister in law in the stories ensure that the women accept their place in the household and do as they are told. it is ironical that other women themselves would play an active role in the subjugation of women and ultimately cause the sickness. The irony in their situation is that they are not slaves to abusive husbands but rather slaves to love and the tradition that they and their husbands must follow.
