The classic “Romeo and Juliet” written by William Shakespeare in 1597 and “West Side Story” based on the story of Romeo and Juliet and it is a movie directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins in 1961 have many similarities. These two classics may have the same story but they have their differences. One of the biggest differences between the “Romeo and Juliet” and “West Side Story” is that Juliet doesn't die. If you have never read Romeo and Juliet you would think that this isn't a big deal but Robert Wise and Jerome Robbin completely denied Shakespeare's law of everyone dying. Another of the main differences is that Romeo is actually one of the founders of one of the two rival gangs or families and his parents are druggies and alcoholics. This important because it shows that Tony or Romeo isn’t part of a powerful family and the other gang or family isn’t powerful either. Also Tybalt's character Bernardo is the leader of the other gang or family. This make a difference in the story because it shows that the characters are able to make there own decision possible making them meet with the other gangs for the war
