In many situations, the repetition of history can be observed, sometimes continuing indefinitely and sometimes eventually breaking the cycle. David Campton’s play Us and Them tells of two warring groups in an intentionally vague setting while Romeo and Juliet is a film directed by Baz Luhrmann that follows two rival families in 1996 Verona Beach while still retaining the original dialogue from William Shakespeare’s tragedy. Both of these texts remind the reader of how history repeats itself, however while Us and Them depicts history as a cycle that goes on continually, Romeo and Juliet shows how such patterns can eventually come to an end. In some instances, certain events serve as a reminder that history often repeats itself in a pattern that …show more content…
In Romeo and Juliet, the youngest generations of the Montague and Capulet families partake in “the continuance of their parents’ rage”. This shows that the conflict and hatred between these groups is not actually their own, but rather one that has been passed down and therefore repeated throughout an unknown number of generations. From this “ancient grudge breaks new mutiny” in the form of violent shootouts that “have thrice disturbed the quiet of [the] streets”. This suggests that the main way in which Luhrmann reminds the audience of the repetition of history is using the theme of conflict, and more specifically through physical violence and death. Unlike in Us and Them, Romeo and Juliet “do with their death bury their parents’ strife”. This is significant because it shows, that through their own deaths, Romeo and Juliet were able to break the cycle of conflict and hate and thus put an end to the repetition of hatred throughout histories of the two families. Luhrmann seems to have used Romeo and Juliet to not only show how history repeats itself but also the way in which such repetition can be potentially put to an end, however comparing the film to Us and Them will highlight some of the specific ways in which such repetition can
Overall Romeo and Juliet is a relevant piece of work for people in modern times because it teaches people consequences for very extreme situations and bad decisions. It shows how powerful love is, like when both Romeo and Juliet kill themselves because they can not live without each other. It also teaches how common suicide is, and how most kids rely on suicide as the next step when they think they have nothing left. Finally, it reveals how rebellious teens are, like when Juliet faked her death to be with
William Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet, tells the story of the tragic love between Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet. The play has been reinterpreted throughout time and Baz Luhrmann’s film version, William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet, uses a modern setting to tell the tale. Luhrmann’s cinematic understanding reinforces the key themes of love, fate and hate as he explores Shakespeare’s famous play.
Both Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet, and Luhrmann’s film, Romeo + Juliet, explore the idea of conflict and how it inevitably leads to tragedy. Although situated in the contrasting social and historical contexts of Elizabethan England and the modern world of Verona Beach in Southern California, 1990s, the two texts both represent how conflict directly leads to tragedy by conveying that, the fight between the Montague and Capulets was depicted as long going and did not have meaning anymore yet the two Lords pride shields them from stopping it, the neglectfulness of the individuals from each house prolonged the battle unnecessarily, and that Juliet and Romeo's knowledge of the conflict between their families drove them to conceal their relationship.
Shakespeare’s classic Romeo and Juliet has been reimagined many times across different mediums. One interpretation that stands out among the rest is Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 film of the same name. The most shocking and powerful difference between Luhrmann’s work and other films or stage productions of this piece, is the movie’s setting. Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet is set in the modern city of Verona Beach, New York, ruled by two powerful business families, the Montagues and the Capulets. Themes, language, and ideas remain the same, while places, props, and wardrobes are updated to the twentieth century. This compelling change helps emphasize the violent, fast-paced, and chaotic society of the play, which comes to precipitate the tragic demise of the two main characters.
The themes found within Romeo and Juliet can relate to contemporary society greatly. The themes in the text include hatred, love, ignorance, the power of fate, revenge, star-crossed lovers, forgiveness, overcoming adversity, and separation from loved ones. William Shakespeare included these themes so the play can be interesting to several age groups and so the audience can relate to world’s history (and in this case future). Clearly, his intention of the production appealing to several age groups followed through because his themes continued to appeal to people in our current time. in our society is revenge- an eye for an
The romantic story of “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare, is about two lovers who are doomed. The Family history between two families the Montague’s and the Capulet’s has formed a feud which then foreshadows the events later to come. The personalities of the characters have a massive impact on the story line as the major events change the play’s pace this therefore leads into the working of fate and coincidence this is an important part in the play as all the little pieces fit and interweave together to make one dramatic and tragic scene in the end.
In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo Montague, one of the main protagonists of the play, contends with the long rivalry between his family and the Capulets. This feud has lasted long enough where the reason of it has been lost amidst the animosity between the two families. Because of this conflict, it serves as an obstacle for Romeo to be with his love, Juliet, the daughter of the Capulet family. The banishment of Romeo as well as the secret of his and Juliet’s marriage adds more onto the animosity and the conflicts between the families. Romeo, however, manages to take on this feud for the sake of his happiness and to be with Juliet. Romeo’s relationship with the past, or rather his family’s past, is the center focus the play and is both the reason for the conflicts that also lead into the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Without the feud between the Montagues and Capulets, two of the overall lessons from the play: “love from a few conquers the hate of all” and “take risks for people you love” would not exist. Not only will the lessons won’t have the same meaning, but also the significance of Romeo’s emotions throughout the play would not complement the work to its fullest without the feud.
All of the deaths brought a new level of tension, except for the death of Romeo and Juliet, which did justice to the family feud. The feud caused the deaths of the two youngsters but also ended up helping the future of the families become brighter. The feud caused both the lovers to be secret about their relationship. They wanted their families to support their love decision but the tension of the feud made it impossible for them to come out. Also, due to the constant deaths that kept arising in both families due to the feud, both lovers could never meet making them compress their love. Due to these problems caused by the bitterness of both families, the confused couple, who didn’t know to choose between family or love, chose death as the one true path to be together without the complications of their
William Shakespeare’s timeless story Romeo and Juliet is one of the most famous romantic plays ever written. It remains one of the most influential works of literature ever produced. Although still performed in its original form, it has many adaptations in modern popular culture including West Side Story, Gnomeo and Juliet and Baz Luhrman’s famous interpretation starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Shakespeare effectively uses literary techniques, monologues and soliloquies to give the audience insight into the characters feelings, emotions, nature, motivation, relationships and intentions. The tragic love story of two star crosses lovers explores the themes of fate and death by using these techniques to unravel the story of misfortune and fatal destiny
For our group project, we decided to develop the “fight scene” in Romeo and Juliet to a western setting. Many characteristics of the old wild west mirrors similar behaviors and traditions that took place in the time of Romeo and Juliet. Both time periods believed in defending their pride and dignity and would go to such lengths as kill to maintain it. Adapting Romeo and Juliet to a western version gave us an opportunity to easily change some parts of it to create a new setting whilst keeping the plot unchanged.
The juxtaposing display of peace and violence creates sympathy within the audience as Romeo is shown to be unable to choose between his one true love and his family. This characterisation enhances the audience’s ability to understand classic characters in a modern

With short attention spans, ever-increasing amounts of technology and endless distractions, 2018’s modern audience vastly differs from the audience of Shakespeare’s time. So, how does Baz Lurhmann’s Romeo and Juliet manage to capture and engage a modern audience? The answer to this question is by using the theme of conflict. People, especially in today’s society, love drama, suspense and action, and combining all three into the movie helps to hold the audience’s attention until the very last moment. The theme is expressed by using SWAT codes, foreshadowing and dramatic irony
