The authors Horace Walpole and Edgar Allan Poe use themes that keeps the reader enticed and wanting to know more. The Castle of Otranto and The Fall of The House of Usher” are two gothic tales that use the elements of surprise and fear. However one of these tales hold the key element of gothic literature where the reader can fantasize about the horror and suspense of the story. The Castle of Otranto is a story of death, darkness, and paranoia. The story begins with a prince name Manfred. He comes off as very standoffish and wants to marry of his son, Conrad. Conrad is very sickly and unappealing as well. While the family prepares for Conrad’s marriage to the young woman Isabella, Conrad is found dead by a servant and described in the chapter “dashed to pieces”. Manfred comes off as nonchalant about his son’s death since he is only focused on the helmet that Conrad wore the moment of his death. During these sudden events, Isabella seems disoriented from her future husband’s demise. Manfred continues to become more selfish while accusing a peasant of using magic to distract Manfred. The story continues to use a pace where you couldn’t predict what was going to happen next. What sticks out the most about the story is how Poe uses the connection between the Usher siblings. Roderick mentions how close he is to Madeline and their connection is very apparent when she passes away. Roderick’s fear including his mental illness increases and he becomes hysterical. This theme shows that the siblings could not live without each other. What continues throughout the entire story is the description of the house and it’s environment. The way the narrator continues to describe the house as being depressing and dreary. This tells the reader to visualize the conditions throughout the
