Comparing The Controversy Between The Colonists And Their Natural Rights

The controversy with the British King and parliament between the colonists and their natural rights has been huge throughout history. It all began with John Locke. Locke is a philosopher who had an ultimate passion for natural rights. The British government were also very involved in protection their English citizens. The British king, King John, signed the Magna Carta is 1215. The Magna Carta was a promise made by the government that “he and future monarchs would refrain from certain actions that harmed, or had the potential to harm, the people of England (Chapter 2 in the Book).” Since these rights had been set apart by the king, they can be taken away by future kings or queens. Some of the laws laid down were the base of the US constitutions 5th and 6th Amendments. The Magna Carta was originally only granted for protection of the English barons. Englishman had come to believe that the Magna Carta was a “cornerstone” of their natural rights. Although King John solidified the laws in 1215, they …show more content…

The biggest one they messed with was property. The colonists sided with Britain during the Seven Years War in hopes to gain property west of the Appalachian Mountains and that obviously didn't happen. I think the colonists could've gone about solving the situations in a more rational way. Instead of just hoping for land, talking with the British government and coming to an agreement about repayment for their assistance in the war could've prevented hard feelings between the colonists and the British government. However, the Acts the British government imposed on the Colonists got out of hand. The British government were so worried about being on the wrong side of the Ohio Valley Indians and were so rushed in paying for the debts of the war that they didn't stop to think how it would effect the residents in their own
