When comparing how the Gospel of Mark and the Gospel of Thomas view the kingdom of God, the writings have some similarities, but have two opposing main views are how you get to the kingdom. In the Gospel of Mark, it talks more about how one has to repent in order to enter the kingdom of God. It’s portrayed as more of a place one has to earn the right to enter through various doings. In the Gospel of Thomas, it has written that the kingdom is inside and all around. It’s not a specific place, but rather the kingdom is present at all times. However, both Gospels describe the actual kingdom in such a similar way, both comparing the kingdom to a mustard seed. In the Gospel of Mark, the first chapter starts off by talking about the kingdom. Mark says, that Jesus said, “The time has come…The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” (Mark 1:15). Mark then talks later about the kingdom being divided and one must go up against the devil, because one can’t enter if they are divided. They must be forgiven of their sins so they aren’t guilty of eternal sin (Mark 3:23-29). All throughout the Gospel of Mark, Jesus speaks through parables. He implies in chapter 4, verses 13-20, that it takes everyone a different amount of time to finally understand the parables. However, one must understand them in order to get rid of Satan’s temptations. Mark’s gospel begins with Jesus’ ministry, leads up to, and ends with His crucifixion. The gospel stresses the importance of Jesus’ divinity and discipleship. There are different examples throughout the gospel of this. Discipleship is shown on Mark’s gospel when Jesus first calls his disciples to repent and believe. In chapter two verses twelve to seventeen Jesus calls sinners to repentance when he has supper with tax collectors. This calls the sinners to follow Him. I have decided to compare and contrast the Gospels of Matthew and Mark. In the book of Matthew, we begin with the angel coming to Joseph and telling him of the son that Mary will bare him. The angel says to name him Jesus and tells him that he will save the people from their sins. This clearly marks Christ as the savior from the start. It can be seen that Jesus is the healer of many when he is presented with sick people, because he heals them. He heals those who are sick, mental, and possessed. He is seen as a teacher when he goes to the top of the mountain and speaks to everyone that is listening, he teaches them what is right from then on. He is seen giving healing powers to his disciples and sending them forth to heal and teach the people of his ways. He is seen as a miracle worker, when he walks on the waters of the sea and calms them and then allows Peter to walk on the water toward him. The Gospel according to Matthew is the first book of the New Testament. The story explains how the Messiah, Jesus, was refused by Israel and finally sent the disciples to preach the gospel around the whole world. As Matthew wrote for his fellow Jews, he wrote his Gospel in the language Jesus spoke, Aramaic, which led early Church Fathers to believe Matthew’s was the first Gospel. On the other hand, the Gospel of Mark teaches that Jesus is the Son of God who assumed human nature. Mark wrote the gospel in Greek for a Gentile-Christian audience, which was undergoing persecution, perhaps in Rome. A central theme is that following Jesus often means that a Christian must suffer like Jesus did. Mark’s Gospel points out that Jesus accepted this important title, but that he was reluctant to let people know his identity. (Matthew 26:26-30 and Mark 14:22-26 )
The roles of disciples play a very important part in developing the message of the gospels due to their close relation to Jesus throughout the stories. To start to understand the importance of the disciples first you have to understand the main purpose of the Gospels. The Gospels are written in order to describe Jesus’s life on earth before Heaven. They give people insight to who Jesus was and create a stronger basis of belief in Jesus and God. In order to bring the Gospels to life they use the students of Jesus or Disciples to project his teachings and stories. The disciples take on many different roles in the varying gospels. They are students, friends, witnesses, observers, and worshipers of Jesus. Disciples come in many different forms of people as well. During the stories of the Gospels, Jesus is essentially walking along picking up new followers and experiencing new things with them. Throughout the experiences, Jesus teaches the disciples and they grow and learn and as a result the reader grows and learns as well. That is why the disciples play such a pivotal role in the comprehension of Jesus and him as a person. It becomes evident when analyzing the different Gospels that Jesus’ relationship with the Disciples is slightly changed in the varying texts. A noticeable difference in the development of the disciple 's relationship to Jesus is present specifically in the Gospel of Mark and the Gospel of Thomas.
Bible Scholar David Garland points to two possibilities as to why Mark’s Gospel is written in a narrative style or form. Garland believes the Gospel of Mark either came from an oral story circulating in the Jerusalem church or it came from a firsthand account of the Apostle Peter. Some bible scholars point to the idea that the Gospel of Mark was narrativized, so it could be heard rather than be read silently. Bible scholar Robert Tannehill believes the Gospel of Mark may even have been collected and delivered orally before it was ever written down. Michael Licona believes if a certain text appears in all three Synoptics, the Gospel of Mark is the most likely source for Matthew and Luke’s accounts. Licona notes that this rule should not be held hard and fast, since Mark may also have been using an oral story while Matthew and Luke choose another source or omitted material where it differs in each of their Gospel’s. The Apostle Peter seems to be the eyewitness account which Mark narrates into a single unified story, which centers around a single central figure Jesus and a group of His closest companions. If the author of Mark was using an oral story to write his gospel from, this would definitely explain its narrative style.
When the writer of the gospel of Mark says “The beginning of the good news”, 1. it is obvious from his opening sentence that he is writing about news he thinks will benefit people. The good news is not only that there is a God, but is about God`s action and is connected to Jesus who is the Messiah and Son of God. 2. It is about hope and fulfillment of hope. Mark alludes to Malachi and Isaiah where the mention of wilderness and exile, symbols of need and expectation. They reinforce the claim that the good news meets such hopes and expectations. In Mark 1:15 ``The time promised by God has come at last!`` he announced. ``The Kingdom of God is near! Repent of your sins and believe the Good News!`` The call to repentance must be understood. People should repent in preparation for the coming of the Lord. In Mark 2:10 ``So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins`` The good news is that in Jesus’ ministry he will baptise with the Holy Spirit. There are many similarities between the Gospel of Luke, Mark, and Matthew. But one difference is the way in which they are written. Luke unlike the other two begins his Gospel with a introduction called a historiographic preface. This is a Greco-Roman literary device used by authors to express the depth of the research and scholarship included in the work. Ehrman states "they commonly refer to the sources that were at his disposal, and they not infrequently suggest that the final product of the author's labors, the volume being written on the subject." In the beginning Gospel of Mark, it states the coming of John the Baptist to make way for Jesus Christ. In John the Baptist's message he states while he baptizes with water the one to come will baptizes with the Holy Spirit. When Jesus came from Nazareth to be baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River the sky opened and the Holy Spirit came upon him like a dove as he was being baptized. God spoke audibly stating that he was pleased with his son. Right after this, the Holy Spirit guided Jesus to be in the desert for forty days, in that time he was tempted by Satan. After John was put in prison. Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the good news. As he walked along the sea of Galilee he approached Simon and Andrew who he told to follow him.
Sarah Alflen REL Essay Matthew's and Mark's passages share their views on the same account, but they are distinctly different for the audiences that they are writing to. Matthew's audience is Jews. He writes to them to remind them that Jesus is the Messiah because he has healed the sick, fulfills things from the Old Testament, and values faith. On the other hand, Mark's audience is mostly for Gentiles or a mixed audience.
Unlike the other gospels, Gospel of Mark is not written in a chronological order. It is also the shortest gospel consisting of only sixteen chapters. It is the gospel that guided other gospel in terms of the way gospels should be written. Some of the major points discussed in the gospels are the introduction of how Jesus was baptized. Mark shows that some people already of Jesus coming like John the Baptist. John was able to baptize Jesus with water. Jesus being Baptized with water is where god recognized him as his son. The story then goes to Jesus going on a forty day journey to be tested. The story of Jesus continues to Jesus traveling to Palestine where he started healing people and bringing back the dead. Mark of Gospel shows Jesus taking his role as the Messiah. Another point of Mark is the death of Jesus. This Gospel focuses mostly the resurrection of Jesus in order for Jesus to end all evil. Coincidences are a funny thing. They may seem completely uncalled for and uncommon; and many may say that the similarities between the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke are just this: uncalled for and uncommon. This plagiarism issue is summed up at “the Synoptic Problem”, making the Gospels of Mark, Matthew, and Luke the synoptic gospels. The problem shows how many passages of the three gospels have the same wording, sometimes in the same order. However, the similarities balance out with the vast differences between what is included and what is not.
In the Men of the Word video L4.1 (2013) Rick Yohn broke down the Gospels, with Matthew representing Jesus as King of the Jews or the Son of David, in Mark as a servant, in Luke as the Son of Man, and in John as God (CCU CAGS). In Matthew, the idea of Jesus as the King of the Jews was to establish His royal lineage and let the Jews know that He is the Messiah who will occupy David’s throne. The style of Mark focused more on Jesus’ deeds to represent His servant-like attitude to live out His Father’s will. Gundry (2012) mentioned how His miracles demonstrated the power over nature, the demonic world, and death (p. 162), possibly to reiterate to the Romans His authority. The use of parables in Luke offered a literary means for people to better understand Jesus’ role as a human, in that He could relate to everyone. Gundry (2012) illustrated this by stating, “Luke thus portrays Jesus as a cosmopolitan Savior with broad sympathies, one who mingles with all sorts of people…” (p. 239). As for John, he aimed to show the omnipotence of Jesus, For He was the eternal God. His Gospel right away established Jesus’ connection to God when it stated, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1, NKJV). The concept of ‘seeing’ the ways of Jesus and that He is the Messiah, is to truly understand the message being portrayed throughout the Gospel, and not the surface meaning that is being represented literally. This concept was very significant to Jesus and his followers as to interpret the meaning without being said, most parables being related to the Kingdom of God and Jesus’ miracle stories. Times were harsh and difficult to spread and teach the words of Jesus, as Mark’s community would face persecution. The disciples of Jesus could ‘see’ more than other believers could perceive, from being apart of Jesus’ life with close relationships, as they were taught the fundamentals from Jesus himself to understand his teachings in much more depth and fluency than others. There were many similarities among Jesus’ twelve disciples and Mark’s community, as both groups share the strong faith in Jesus and God’s power by spreading the good news to others as well as experiencing hardships caused by arrogant hierarchy and society. Mark was the second of four Gospels although some Scholars argue and insist Mark was the first Gospel written 1. Mark was written by John Mark in AD 65, with a target audience of Roman Christian beleivers 2. Mark was written in a unique manner in regards to literary genre, as it contains figures of speech, and portray life situations in a passionate story like setting that can make the reader feel as if he is there 3. The Gospel of Mark is the shortest of the four Gospels, however it is written in a manner that emphasizes more so on Jesus’s works than Jesus’s words 4. The key theme in Mark is to portray the life of Jesus Christ as the son of God 5, and the purpose was to show the human qualities and emotions that Jesus displayed from anger (Mark 3:5), and compassion (Mark 1:41). Some of the key events of Jesus Christ’s life in the Gospel Mark include his miracles, his entrance into Jerusalem, the last supper, his arrest and trial, his crucifixion, his resurrection, and his ascension 6. The Gospel of Mark ends with his instruction to the eleven Apostles “And he said unto them “Go ye into all the world, and preach the Gospel to the whole creation” (Mark 16:16), and his ascension into Heaven (Mark 16:19).
