Comparison: Minority Report and 1984

1984 and Divergent have many similarities which include determining their faction/parties, drug usage, and uniforms, which tell the differences between each differing level member. There are also differences in each of these books, too.

In “1984,” Orwell portrays Winston’s secret struggle to undermine the totalitarian rule of Big Brother and the Party in Oceania. The different government agencies, such as the Thought Police and Ministry of Love, exercise unrestricted totalitarian rule over people. Winston actively seeks to join the rebellion and acquire the freedoms undermined by the Party. On the other hand, Heinlein’s brief narrative, “The Long Watch,” depicts a contrasting struggle championed by Dahlquist against the power hungry Colonel Towers and the Patrol. Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World and George Orewell’s 1984 were both composed surrounding times of war in the twentieth century. The authors were alarmed by what they saw in society and began to write novels depicting the severe outcomes and possiblities of civilizaton if it continued down its path. Although the two books are very different, they both address many of the same issues and principles.

George Orwell's 1984 and the movie V for Vendetta both have similar views on how society is being run. Since The book 1984 was written before V for Vendetta, so perhaps V for Vendetta may have based some of its ideas on this book. Both 1984 and V for Vendetta have similarities like the way the themes and how the male protagonists are the one in charge of overturning the government.

It is no secret that the media is able to influence the general public’s opinion on most anything. Whether the subject is fiction or non, movies, documentaries, and the news especially, are capable of swaying the public’s opinions and perceptions one way or the other. Not even the world of law enforcement is safe from the media’s purview (Barlow, M. H. and Barlow, D. E. and Chiricos T. G., 1995), as media portrayals often romanticize law enforcement as a well oiled machine that always gets the bad guy, and has a perfect relationship with the public. On top of this, the media has displayed a poor habit of portraying crime as predominantly violent and racial, rather than showing the whole picture(Gilliam, F. D. and Iyengar, S. and Simon, A. and Wright, O., 1996). In this paper, the motives driving these depictions, as well as the scope and effect of the media’s influence on public perception of law enforcement, will be explored and discussed.

Dick, author of the sci-fi short story "The Minority Report" (MR), has given us. Set in a futuristic New York City, we see Police Commissioner John A. Anderton as the founder of a promising new branch of policing: Precrime, a system that uses "Precogs" (mutated and retarded oracles) to predict all future crimes. However, the system appears to backfire when Anderton himself is accused to kill a man he's never even heard of.      1984 and Brave New World, written by George Orwell and Aldous Huxley, respectively, are both books that reflect the authors vision of how society would end up at the course it was going at the time of the writing of the book. Both books were written more than fifty years ago, but far enough apart that society was going in a totally different direction at the time. There are many ways to compare these two books and point out the similarities. On certain, deep levels they are very much the same, while at first glance, on the surface, they are very different. One point that in some parts is the same and some very different, is the governments in each of these books method’s of control.

Ridley Scott and George Orwell both continually depict control in their texts through the utilisation of various techniques, in order to portray the effect this has on the characters of Blade Runner and 1984 respectively. This is done by both Scott and Orwell expertly and provides the audience with further insight and depth of the characters. Some films portray how types of police corruption can have a positive influence on society, while others show the dark side of police corruption. Many law enforcement agents join the criminal justice with the basic idea of "justice for all," however, most of them do not realize that the nice guy doesn't always win. Even though there are vast amounts of movies which specifically address police corruption we will use three main movies for our argument today, mostly LA Confidential, however, also Training Day.

1984 is what many considered the first dystopian novel and started the trend of writing about the failure of human society. George Orwell's dark and gritty style of writing inspired numerous other writers to craft their own tales of society's failure and downward spiral. One of these writers was Steven Spielberg one of the greatest directors of the modern era, creating masterpieces such as E.T The Extraterrestrial and Jurassic Park. His dystopian tale, Minority Report, shares many similarities with 1984. 1984 and The Hunger Games are two brilliant novels written by two award winning authors. They contain many characteristics that typical dystopian novels possess; however, they’re presented differently to create the fictitious environments, where both characters live. Which is why they make such great pieces of Literature to compare.

Question: compare the ways the George Orwell and Steven Spielberg explore the power of the government. Minority report and 1984 both explore the topic of an overarching police force, which have great control over the citizens and do not operate with many rules. The two texts question the ethics of law enforcement and punishment, and they both discuss the limits of crime. These are techniques that are used to represent the power of the government in a way that can be visualised. The texts also have different outcomes which both represent how the government can be fought and how it can change.

Both 1984 and Fahrenheit 451 predict a dystopian future where information is tightly controlled and the populace seems to care little for the fact that they are being lied to and manipulated into working for the ambitions of their government. Both governments in the story have taken control of the media and this the population, and both characters are apart of agencies that help keep the government in control of the people. In Fahrenheit 451 the man is a fireman and burns all of the books that he can find, this keeps the population dumb and easily controllable. In 1984 Winston works for the Ministry of Truth, its job is to help edit news and entertainment in order to keep the party in line and be able to misinform the prolls. Both of these characters unknowingly worked for the party and political establishment.

When the Sun was A God and With Fire and Sword are two films directed by Jerzy Hoffman, respectively in 2003 and 1999. The films were based on the historical events, illustrating the common matters of individuals’ desire to overpower others with wealth, power, and control in order to take over the throne and land. Both films took place in different settings – Piast dynasty era and Khmelnytsky Uprising era – but they do share some similarities and differences. The reason for why I chose these two films to compare and contrast was due to the fact that they share certain aspects that set the films alike and apart from one another. The aspects are: greed, friendship, loyalty, women, and love.
