Comparison: My Definition Of A Hero

Hero’s come in many different perspectives. Some might view a hero as the fictional super heroes. Other’s consider hero’s to be modern day people. Some qualities of a hero are someone who is courageous, brave, and kind. A hero is a person who is admired for their courageous acts and achievements. They never give up even when times get hard. It’s more about the hero taking a stand for what they believe is right. Taking a stand counts more than winning.

The stories of heroes have been at the axis of nearly all cultures throughout history. Each different type of religion or culture has their own heroes or legends, each one of them having their differences to go along with the beliefs at hand. On the other hand, each and every hero also has their similarities, which therefore makes them the hero. In poetry and in song, literature, and action movies, the hero embodies the qualities of bravery, strength, and honor. According to Merriam-Webster, a hero is a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability: a warrior: a person admired for achievements and noble qualities: one who shows great courage. While others define this concept as a trustworthy cause a selfish or unselfish act. On the other hand, a hero is someone who stands for integrity and justice for all mankind and willingly put his life in peril for that belief. As noted there will always be different definitions of a hero as of the diverse perspective on the issue.

Being a hero requires an individual to possess bravery, kindness, and selflessness. These characteristics are noble qualities people admire. Heroes achieve incredible tasks that other people cannot imagine. A hero is an individual who is courageous, would risk their life for others, caring and selfless such as Edward Byers.

Heroes do extraordinary things and often tend to be people or figures we place on a pedestal whom often have made inspirational sacrifices (Allison and Goethals 24-25). Heroes as courageous, selfless and skillful humanitarians. They can be extraordinary athletes or even someone who gives the gift of time and or sacrifice (Allison and Goethals 26-30). Fictional heroes are described as self-confident, suave, extremely virtuous, and attractive.

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. They can be fictional or nonfictional. Maybe a hero is a child or possibly an ordinary person. People can also have multiple heroes. Whenever I think of my current hero, Andre Bryant comes to mind, he helped, connected, and a hard worker.

A Hero, in my opinion, is someone who sets an example, and pulls through the tough times as a leader. They can also defined as someone who expands our sense of possibility (LaBarge). Heroes are chosen by us from the culture they are from and the qualities they have. Some of these qualities include bravery, prowess, loyalty, honor and strength (Jokinen). Epic Heroes, Superheroes, and Personal Heroes are all types of Heroes people in today’s society can connect to.

There are many types of heroes (such as the ones in comic books, myths, movies, or even just everyday life heroes) but all of them have perseverance when they’re going through a conflict. Heroes are role models and they’re people that we look up too. They all have unique and special qualities that make one another different from each other. For example policemen battle crime everyday and when they’re overcoming a conflict they have determination, courage and other traits that people admire them for and that make them as a hero. Typically a hero is admired for their achievement/actions and qualities.

There are thousands of heroes in books, movies, comics, and poems. Just about all of these heroes stick to a similar path or journey. However these heroes each have their own specific role in their society that they live in. Their job is to be a leader and protector over the common people, that live in their society, from any type of danger or evil.

When the word "hero" is spoken, everyone has different thoughts. Some will think of super powers like flying and saving people from villains; while others have a certain person they know or have heard of that come to mind who have done something to make a difference in the lives of others but who is a hero to you? To answer this question you must first ask yourself what a hero is; what comes to your mind when someone says the word. When I am confronted with these questions I always have the same thoughts; smart, strong will power, and someone who stands up for what they believe is right.

What makes a hero could have difficulty to define given that several different qualities exist that create or deem an individual worthy of the title when portrayed through fictional characters. One may view a hero as those specifically seen in marvel superhero movies or perhaps even disney movies. It often leads to the high expectations of what a hero should always do and how they should always act. More importantly, all heroes typically have a fantastic super power which creates an illusion that the ideal superhero can only exist in the realm of fiction. This makes the idea of a real one seem impossible and even imaginary. Alfred de Vigny claims that heroes do not have any existence in this world such as the fictional hero with amazing strength in Beowulf, but the mortal heroes of reality, with nothing except their own wits to save them and defend others, do exist inside the shadow of the ideal fictional hero.
