“I will not judge you John,” says Elizabeth Proctor from The Crucible as she forgives John and gives him the decision whether he lives or dies. Elizabeth Proctor is a Christian and holy woman who is married to John Proctor will never tell a lie. She lives on the outskirts of town and gets pregnant during the story. I am most parallel to Elizabeth Proctor because we are both loyal, forgiving, and caring. In The Crucible Elizabeth Proctor is loyal, just like I am. Elizabeth Proctor is loyal because she stayed with her husband even though he had an affair. Although she was mad and angry at John, she never left him and stuck by his side. I resemble Elizabeth because of my loyalty. I am loyal because I can always keep a secret. For example, my one friend told me what girl he finds attractive. He trusted me with his secret because of my loyalty and I have yet to tell anybody his secret. My friends could tell me anything and trust me that I will not tell anybody. I am also loyal because I stick to my word. For instance my brother and I made a promise to each other that we will stick up for each other no matter what. One time last year he came home after curfew and my parents were mad at him. I stuck up for him and distracted my parents by taking them behind our house to see a “tree that fell down.” I made up the excuse to get my parents out of the house to see an apparent tree that fell down at 11 o’clock at night so my brother could get inside the house. Even though my parents
People’s true character is revealed through their actions. Their morals and ethics can be told from how they choose to act in a situation. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible; the character of John Proctor is an honorable man despite having committed wrongful acts. He was able to redeem himself through acts that is considered courageous, such as when he refuses to contribute to the lie of witchcraft in Salem, when he fights for the people who were convicted of witchcraft and when he regrets being a dishonest man.
Elizabeth is also strong and courageous. When John is accused of witchcraft, Elizabeth is willing to follow along with the decision John decides about whether he wants to confess or not. She knows if he confesses he will be living a lie and if he tells the truth, he will be put to death. Although the decision John makes will affect Elizabeth and she wants John alive, she is courageous towards John by showing her support and love. Elizabeth knows she must put her opinions to the side and John must construct this decision on his own. Elizabeth states, “I cannot judge you, John, I cannot” (Miller). Elizabeth is also strong because she was falsely accused by Abigail and

What do you think of when you hear the word heroism? Is it a person becoming a hero or the acts they do which may lead to another act making them seem like a hero? Arthur Miller’s The Crucible presents Elizabeth Proctor and Abigail Williams who serve important roles through their unique characteristics and thinking. John Proctor’s wife, Elizabeth, has two defining characteristics that show throughout this play: she not only lives to please everyone around her and behaves passively, but she lacks the assertiveness to confront what lies directly under her nose. However, Abigail, the girl John Proctor commits the crime of adultery with, manipulates those around her. She is keen to act upon an opportunity when one arises and feels a determination to get her way. While Elizabeth and Abigail are similar in their love for John Proctor, Elizabeth differs from Abigail through her tendency to try to please everyone and keep her own emotions bottled up, while Abigail believes the world revolves around her and works to make things go her own way.

In The Crucible, Arthur Miller employs many rhetorical and poetic elements to depict the changing nature of relationships between the play’s characters. One of the most rhetorically dynamic relationships portrayed in the play is the marriage between the protagonist John Proctor and his wife Elizabeth. Miller skillfully uses Elizabeth and John’s language and the overall tone of their marriage to manifest John’s complex character development throughout the play. The marriage evolves from a relationship of hostility and tension to sacrifice and selflessness as John becomes a man of integrity. While John is overall more of a dynamic character than his wife, Elizabeth does not remain static for the entirety of the play; she demonstrates a slight character change in the final act that is, in a sense, opposite from her husband’s. The changes in the language of Elizabeth and John throughout the play result from the gradual breakdown and final anagnorisis of John’s character as he learns the value of the truth and becomes willing to shed his formerly coveted dignity for Elizabeth’s honor. This evolution of communication and character between the Proctors allows for mutual forgiveness and the final reconciliation of their marriage before John dies as a martyr.
Goody Proctor, also known as Elizabeth Proctor, is the wife of John Proctor. Abigail Williams accused Goody Proctor of witchcraft. Abigail Williams was found with a needle in her stomach the same place where a needle was stuck in a poppet, in the belly. When she first heard she was accused of witchcraft it was like she already knew she would be accused "She wants me dead. I knew all week it would come to this!"
She even said, “it needs a cold wife to prompt lechery”, (Miller 137). around the end of the play. One reason she distrusts John, is that he has claimed he was not alone with her. He later says that he was, in fact, alone with her for a short while. It takes a person of strength to be able to take that lie he gave and still control herself in the manner a wife should do. It was her inner strength that showed her that “it were a cold house she kept”(Miller 136). and needed to fix that problem.
all faith in him, she feels that he does not want to prove Abigail is
In a town plagued by judgment and fraud, Elizabeth Proctor is an outlier. With impeccable morals and ethics, Elizabeth Proctor attempts to stay adamant with her traits despite the hysteria that provided a challenge. Throughout the story of “The Crucible,” Elizabeth proctor is constantly put under severe tests that impact both her character and others that are close to her. Much like many other characters from the story, Elizabeth discovers the faults in herself and how they furthered the hysteria of witchcraft in Salem and surrounding communities. Elizabeth undergoes several ordeals that directly influence her as a person, and she grows and develops along with the story of “The Crucible.” All of theses tests display a great deal of
Travel back in time to the year 1692 and visit the outskirts of small-town Salem, Massachusetts and you will discover the inhumanities of the Salem witch trials. This was during a time when the devil was very much alive in the eyes of Protestant Christians and was constantly doing his work stealing souls and turning woman to witches. During Arthur Miller’s version of the Salem witch trials, depicted in The Crucible, more than 200 people were accused of witchery. One such person was Mrs. Elizabeth Proctor, a woman perceived by many as a wholesome member of the community and furthermore, a saint. However, she has a secret that is affecting her personality and her love life with her husband. With that being said, one can see that the personality and feelings Elizabeth express at the beginning is not the same as the ones she demonstrates in the end, in other words, she is a very dynamic character.
Elizabeth Proctor is the strongest of the female characters, she is portrayed as the perfect housewife and nothing more. Elizabeth Proctor is the good and wholesome wife of John Proctor. She shows the stereotypical good qualities of a wife in that time and age. Miller conveys her as the heartbroken wife who was cheated on by her young and beautiful servant. She is nothing more than John Proctor’s wife. Elizabeth being the obedient and Christian wife she that she is, tries to find forgiveness in her heart for John. Miller is making it seem like it is all Abigail’s fault because she is this evil person when it is just as much Proctor’s fault. The women
