“Big brother is watching you” (Orwell 3). The book 1984 by George Orwell depicts a society in which the people have no rights to freedom. When someone decides to think differently, they get re-educated, or “vaporized”. This book does not directly relate to any government system in particular, but rather the communist party as a whole. Although today’s society and that of 1984 have obvious differences, the surveillance, class system, and ideals have many similarities. In the first place, people of the modern day are being watched constantly much in the same way as in 1984. The telescreens have the ability to see and hear everything and send the information to Big Brother. “The telescreen received and transmitted simultaneously” (Orwell 3). The telescreens were able to display an image or a video on the screen, while at the same time, it was able to see and hear what was happening on the other end of the screen. Contemporary smart devices are able to transmit videos and receive audio that the National Security Agency (NSA) is able to see. “There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment” (Orwell 3). Cameras and microphones are everywhere. They are on street corners, in grocery stores, in pockets, and on desks. No matter what people do, they are being watched by either a security camera or by an undercover government worker. In stores, there are people that walk around and pretend to be shopping.
