The idea that everything is going to be okay as long as you work the land or work hard does not apply in this scenario. The protagonists would have been able to work hard and have economic success or stability. The text states,“I got you! You can’t keep a job and you lose ever’ job I get. Jus’ keep shovin’ all over the country all the time...You do bad things and I got to get you out.”(Steinbeck 11) and these ruins their chances of being able to achieve their dream. In brief, there is no way that Lennie and George can accomplish their dream of living off the land that would cost them roughly $600 even though they keep trying and moving all over the country to have a …show more content…
Lennie is also unable to tell what is a the appropriate thing to do during any situation. As a result, Lennie and George are unable to settle peacefully. In the text, “...he wants to touch ever’thing he likes. Just wants to feel it. So he reaches out to feel this red dress an’ the girl lets out a squawk, and I heard all the yellin’ , so I comes running, an’ by that time Lennie’s so scared all he can think to do jus’ hold on.” (Steinbeck 41) this proves that despite they are always together not everyone will necessarily understand where they are coming from. In brief, George and Lennie are forced to constantly move and to rely on themselves because no one can understand Lennie’s

In 1920 women got the right to vote. In 1948 President Truman signed the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act. Jeannette Rankin was the first woman to be elected to congress. Women’s rights have come a long way, nowadays women are CEO’sCeo’s of companies and doing great things. Although it wasn’t always like this, in Of Mice and Men, and in Sojourner Truth’s Ain’t I a Woman speech women weren’t treated right. Men thought that women weren’t as strong as them, and couldn’t do a man’s job.
In Chapter 25, Jack completes actions that are due to him finding Babette’s bottle of the tablet Dylar. Jack takes a tablet out of the bottle and brings it to Winnie, the neurochemist at the university. “What can you tell me about it?” Jack said to Winnie. The reason why Jack decides to bring the single tablet of Dylar to Winnie is because he is eager to know what the tablets actually do to his wife. Whenever Jack tries to confront Babette about the tablets, she always avoids the question and moves onto a different subject, which makes Jack even more eager to find out the reason on why she takes Dylar and constantly avoids the topic. Jack is very motivated to find out what Dylar is and goes out of his way to search for Winnie, who frequently moves her way across
“Am I my brother’s keeper? Yes, I am.” Scott, Jill “Brotha”. Since biblical times it has been debated over whether or not “I am my brother’s keeper”. In Mice of Men by John Steinbeck, he takes a deeper look at the meaning of my brother’s keeper. Of Mice and Men is based in California during the 1930’s. It is a tale of two friends who travel across California looking for work, and a place to call their own. While the story is mostly about George Milton, who looks after his travelling companion Lennie Smalls, who has a mental disability; the story is also about how Lennie takes care of George. For instance, they often sit and talk about how they have each other to take care of, and when Crooks makes it seem like Lennie is not coming back, Lennie almost assaults Crooks to protect George. Lennie, more than once in the story offers to leave George, if he feels that would be best, sacrificing his
Nelson Mandela, the first black president of South Africa, once stated that “we owe our children, the most vulnerable citizens in our society, a life free of violence and fear.” Mandela’s belief reveals that society has a great influence on the minds of its youth. If children are protected from a life of violence, they will grow up to be a strong, healthy, and ideal representation of our world; in contrast, if the youth are exposed to violence and fear, they themselves will become destructive. Books, for instance, are a common influence on the youth due to their varying content. A case in point of books’ effects on young adults is the controversy over John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men because
The rabbit was telling the truth he should of just listen to him. but George was trying to put him to rest because he was struggling in life.If he would not killed him they would killed him and Lennie. The rabbit was telling him the true. But if Lennie was still alive the cops would been looking for them because they are not supposed to be there. Lennie trust George because in the past they been together that the only friend that Lennie had. George has always told Lennie if he was in trouble to hide be hind a bush. Also in chapter 1 there was a snake trying to kill a rabbit but now on chapter 6 the rabbit was trying to kill the snake because he wanted to get revenge. When George tells Lenni “Gonna do it soon ...Ever’body gonna be nice to you.
Being depressed, George says “No, Lennie. I ain’t mad. I never been mad, an’ I ain’t now. That’s a thing I want ya to know” (Steinbeck 106). At times, George was very angry with Lennie, but he wants Lennie to understand that he was mad only because he cared about Lennie. Although Lennie doesn’t quite understand, he understands the unconditional love that George shows towards him so he is immediately happy again. George is also compassionate towards lennie when he learned a lesson from the situation in Weed. One time, George tells Lennie to jump in a pool and Lenny obey’s his instruction as always enough though he can’t swim. Lennie is left drowning for a while, and then he is saved by George. After this, George never commands Lennie to do anything that is illogical or funny in George’s view. There are also many situations where George is supposed to be extremely angry with Lennie but he’s not due to sympathy. For ex: when Lennie kills the mouse, the dog, or Curley’s wife. Also, dealing with george’s mental disability is an important way George shows compassion. Lennie’s memory loss is the cause of most of his mistakes. Holmes told the court, “And I wanted to stop her suffering” (Nadeau 1)For example, When Lennie talks to Curley, he is injured by Lennie, as George immediately orders him to fight back. As a result, Curley is badly injured but George is happy that he was able to
Sometimes decisions are like a drug addiction. You know the choice you need to make (quit for crying out loud!) ,but it may be harder than you choose to think. You know you need to quit smoking cigarettes, it’s taking you down a path to life terminating lung cancer. However, you refuse to jump the derailing train, because your need is stronger than your desire to quit. Because Lennie’s time was out and his train was about to go hurtling off the track, George made the right decision to spare Lennie from the suffering that would’ve followed, and I believe that this was the right decision.
An unknown source once said “People with good intention make promises, people with good character keep them” (https://becauseisaidiwould.com/promisequotes/). Of Mice and Men, is an amazing story, that revolves around the journey of two characters, who are not similar in any way, who go on a wild trek chasing their American Dream. This eye catching story revolves around the two best friends, George and Lenny. George can be classified as someone who knows his way around, he knows how to get around the in’s and out’s of all situations, and is ultimately the only reason Lenny might still be alive and safe. Lenny on the other hand can be described as a giant baby. The ginormous man, topping the charts in both size and strength, could pretty easily
“Then he replaced his hat, pushed himself back from the river, drew up his knees and embraced them. Lennie, who had been watching, imitated George exactly” (Steinbeck 4). Despite his large frame and age, Lennie is still unable to completely think for himself and will follow his companion’s example for guidance. He is still learning to live in a world that is harsh and selfish. Yet only a few chapters later, Lennie has accidentally killed Curley’s wife. Instead of panicking, Lennie merely apologizes to her and is more worried about George’s reaction. “‘I don’t want ta hurt you,’ he said, ‘but George’ll be mad if ya yell’” (Steinbeck, 91). Unlike an adult, Lennie fears his parent (George), more than the law itself. Like a child, he will do anything to avoid his parent’s wrath, even if it is something morally wrong. And before Lennie and George arrive at the ranch, George asks Lennie what he will do when questioned by the boss. He surprisingly remembers George’s instructions from before. “George gestured with his spoon. ‘What you gonna say tomorrow when the boss asks you questions?’ Lennie stopped chewing and swallowed. His face was concentrated. ‘I...I ain’t gonna...say a word’ ‘Good boy!’” (Steinbeck 15). Because no one else besides George will care for Lennie, Lennie feels that everything
While journeying to the farm and working on the farm, George realizes that the world won’t allow him and Lennie to have their dream
Of Mice and Men Of Mice and Men is an American literary classic. The novel was written by John Steinbeck in 1937. It tells a story of Lennie and George, two men looking for work during the time of the Great Depression. The novel reveals that Lennie has a mental illness and George is held responsible for taking care of him. Being set in the mid 1930’s , many people did not understand mental illnesses, hence the actions and strong language of the characters.
The plan is doomed virtually from the beginning not only because human fellowship cannot survive, but also because the image of the farm, as conceived by George, Lennie, and Candy, is overly idealized. The probability being that life, even if they obtained the farm, would not be as they envision. The fruits and vegetables in abundance, the livestock and domestic animals, and the community of people involved are unreasonable expectations.
From the very beginning of the book George and Lennie discuss how someday they won't have to work on the farm and they will be able to live on their own and do whatever they want. George says “Well do her, he said. We'll fix up that little old place and we’ll go live there. S'pose they
When Lennie accepts what happens he says that he did “another bad thing.” By saying this he is referring to his past troubles causing George to lose it several times. Again Lennie loves soft things so when his aunt gave him mice to pet as a kid not knowing his own strength those mice wouldn’t last long, they would be crushed in Lennie’s firm grip (Page 9). Still not learning clueless Lennie scares a girl half to death when he pets her to hard and doesn't let go (Page 41), Lennie was accused of rape and could have been lynched if it weren’t for George. The cycle of harm continues to get worse and worse until George knows something has to be done.
