Decent Essays

Abortion is a topic that Americans have found controversial since the ruling in the landmark case of Roe v. Wade in 1973 where abortion was declared fundamentally legal by the Supreme Court. Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy before the fetus is viable to survive outside of the uterus. There are different types of abortion procedures. The most common procedure is elective abortion, or induced abortion, which is the willful termination of a pregnancy. Many people see abortion in a negative light because they believe that fetuses are not yet fully human. Many others see abortion in a positive light because it protects women from some harmful effects during pregnancy. In my views, abortion is ethical because it helps the mother and allows for the mother to terminate unwanted pregnancies. Abortion should be legal because it provides safety for the mother and the child. In this case, it is important to weigh the life of the mother of the life of the baby. Many anti-abortion backers claim that women could be in pain or even die as a result of abortion, however it is extremely rare. A woman's risk of dying from having an abortion is 0.6 in 100,000, while the risk of dying from giving birth is around 14
