Concligation : The Issue Of Abortion

Abortion is defined as an early termination of a pregnancy, willingly. It is one of the most controversial issues that is brought up because there are so many different views. This ethical issue today is usually split in two groups, one of these views being pro-choice, giving the option to have an abortion to the family of the fetus. The other main view today is pro-life, which states under no circumstance may a life be taken away. There are many concerns with abortion, the biggest being is the fetus an actual person yet? Many of us will never know the answer to that question. Two views I will go deeper into is the view of Immanuel Kant and the view of a Utilitarian.

Abortion is defined as “The deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy.” (Oxford Dictionary). Nearly three out of ten women in the U.S. have an abortion by the time they are 45-years-old (Planned Parenthood). Abortion is morally permissible because an abortion prevents a woman and the potential child’s suffering. Abortion is moral because it is a fundamental right of competent adults to make their own decisions on the course of their medical treatment, can alleviate further suffering in immoral cases, such as rape and is protected by rule of law.

One of the most controversy issues that have had many Americans debating over the years is abortion. But why so much controversy? Well to start with we have to understand what abortion is. According to the Oxford dictionary, abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. There are also 2 types of abortions. The first one is Therapeutic abortion, which the baby is aborted for the safety of the mother, and elective abortion, in which the abortion is performed due to a choice that the mother has made for an unborn child. In other words, abortion is the end or the expulsion of a fetus from the uterus by natural causes or by clinical methods before it is able to survive independently.

There are two sides of abortion, those who believe that it is a woman's constitutional right to decide, and others such as myself, who believe that abortion is unethical, and it is murder when destroying a child’s life.

The techniques used for abortion have changed drastically over time and many cultures developed their own forms of abortions. Originally abortions were unregulated and many women performed abortions on themselves at home, which were very unsafe and many at home abortions resulted in injury or death. The two main methods of abortion as of right now are surgical and medical abortion, these are much safer than previous methods and rarely inflict any harm onto the woman. The surgical method is performed using a vacuum like device to empty the uterus of its content. The medical abortion can only be used early in a pregnancy and requires a woman to take a prescribed pill for the first seven weeks of her pregnancy.

Abortion is the induced termination of pregnancy before the embryo or fetus is capable of survival. This issue has created moral and social concern since the beginning of time. Individuals as well as the church, which is very influential on some people, have had to take a stand on either side of this controversial issue. There are many different views being taken on abortion making the decision of right or wrong that much more difficult to make.

On January 22, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court decided in the landmark case Roe v. Wade, that states could not restrict the right for a woman to have an abortion. Although more than forty years have passed, the controversy surrounding abortion rages on. Many different arguments are used in order to attack or defend abortion. It’s important to look at each of these from as objective of a lens a possible to keep bias, while unavoidable, to a minimum. Essentially each side of this argument boils their points down to be as follows, abortion should be included in a woman’s constitutional right to privacy, while the other side relentlessly argues that abortion is murder. What this says is that the side for abortion doesn’t see the unborn child as a person with equal rights to the mother, while the side against abortion feels that the unborn child in fact has the rights of any person including that of the mother. There are many areas where this argument can be taken obviously, but right now the point that really needs to be evaluated is just this. Is a human being’s fetus a person with the same rights as any other person, or does a pregnant woman have power over the life of the fetus inside of her? This question is not a straight forward one, but the answer boils down to be that based on the necessary requirements to be considered an individual person, the developing embryo inside of a woman does not meet the sufficient conditions to be classified as a person. This is a very controversial issue because many opinions arise about whether or not a child is to be considered alive at a certain point in the pregnancy, as well as the reasoning behind a mothers decision for killing her unborn child. The ethical beliefs of this issue could be based strictly political, religiously, or a combination of both depending on one’s view.

Abortion is a procedure performed when a mother wants to dispose/ kill the baby. This procedure can be done at any stage of pregnancy. The procedures are not only immoral but also brutal. Abortion is wrong and needs to be stopped.

Abortion has been a controversial subject for decades. For a small introduction into this topic, allow me to explain what an abortion is. In summery, an abortion is the voluntary terminiation of pregnancy typically within the first trimester, but can be performed in the second and third trimester. Currently, most abortions are performed by medicianal methods within the first trimester. Then with the second trimester there is a surgical method that is used. This being said, in the past abortions were done illegally in dark alley's with the use of coat hangers which put the mothers in great risk. Eventually there was a court case questioning the rightousness of abortion and whether it should be legailized or not. This case took place in 1973 and became known as Roe Vs. Wade, which is the most famous legal case of abortion to this day. I am currently Pro Choice and in my opinion, abortions should remain legal.

The main argument on abortion is really a debate on human life, and whether it has value from the moment of conception.
