Concussions occur daily in a life of an athlete. This can change their lives forever if they have one that is severe. They might get lucky if its minor and they can go back to playing. Concussions are very dangerous in an athletic world, because they can affect their lives even after they retire from playing that sport. These concussions can start off at any age, but the huge problem people are having is pro sports. NFL being one the biggest leagues to have these problems. There are many debates about whether the NFL are being careful enough and understanding how bad these concussions are. There are some people who are trying to help this problem become known to all. David Duerson’s family, the family of a legend, found Duerson dead in his home, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the chest (Bartholet). Duerson had won two championship rings, named first team All-Pro by three sources, received the NFL Man of the Year Award, and held an NFL record for 19 years (Bartholet). So why would this amazing man with a life of accomplishments commit suicide? Doctors wanted to find out. Duerson had sent his family a text message that he wanted his brain to be donated to research for concussions caused by professional football. In his final months, Duerson had complained to his family about his declining mental state. After his death, researchers found that Duerson had a disease found in many ex-professional football players, known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy, caused by concussions (Bartholet).

It is important to analyze the NFL and concussions among its players as an interrelated issue rather than looking at individual instances. When a player sustains a concussion they then undergo physical repercussions from this traumatic brain injury. The case that really started all this concussion discussion was back in 2002 when Hall of Fame Center Mike Webster was found dead. Webster’s death spurred debate on the issue that still continues today. A concussion is a brain injury that causes long term brain damage. Some football players will hide injuries, so that they can continue to play the game. Rules have been changed to protect the players health, for example if a player is suspected of have a concussion they are not permitted to play without getting checked out. Football concussions have a long lasting effect on physical and mental health. Concussions also affect how the game is played and regulated.

Concussions in high school sports doubled from 2005 to 2012. High School’s put in a new rule called “Return to Play” this rule was put into place so players waited the right amount of time to come back after receiving a serious head injury. Studies show that a concussion from a high school athlete takes longer to recover from than for older athletes. Concussions have been known to occur frequently in contact sports, making the rules based on injuries in need of change. In "Concussion recovery is slower in girls, mounting evidence suggests" by Diana Kwon, the passage states that concussions occur in female athletes more than twice the time as male athletes. Occuring in the sport of hockey, soccer, and football, where heads are continually clashing. I honestly do not believe that girl or boy impact sports should be banned; i do believe that the athletes should wear helmets. Helmets should be necessary when playing high-risk sports. Female sports do not have as many rules as males do which is why concussions occur more within the female population.

Students participating in sports should not return after suffering from a concussion unless schools require a doctor’s consent for the athlete to return to the sport.

Any type of sports is bound to have some type of injuries. These injuries will vary and the athlete will take the necessary treatment that he or she needs to be active again. Now sports related injuries differ in how it affects the health and well being of the athlete; this means that some injuries are more serious and need more attention than others. However concussions, head injuries that were only looked as minor sports related injuries are to be treated with more delicacy since they not only affect an athlete’s body but can also have multiple effects on the player injured. Concussions in professional sports have had long-term effects on those athletes whom have suffered from these types of injuries. Providing not only better equipment but also better regulations and treatments can make a difference inside the sports community to help those athletes who have suffered these types of head injuries.
