As Winston Churchill stated, “The flags of the Confederate States of America were very important and a matter of great pride to those citizens living in the confederacy. They are also a matter of great pride for their descendants as part of their heritage and history,” but in present day, the American people are claiming the meaning of the confederate flag is hate and discrimination. In South Carolina, the confederate flag was taken down and placed in a museum after a heated debate stemming from a mass shooting of nine black churchgoers in a historical Charleston church during bible study. The shooter, Dylann Roof, was a white supremacist. A photograph of Roof emerged showing him holding a confederate flag which fueled the political flag debate. The confederate flag is at the center of the controversy over racism. Although, it was first created as an official flag of confederacy, the confederate flag has changed into what is now either a symbol of Southern heritage and pride or slavery and racism by Americans. It is time to put this flag in a museum to be honored by those it means something to and no longer stand as a reminder of the division our country once suffered, so we can move on as a nation, united.

The beginning of Confederate flag controversy started due to the request of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) to remove the flag off the South Carolina statehouse. On the other hand, there are other groups that believe differently which considered themselves pro-flag groups. They claim that the flag holds a sign of history of heritage and should stay on the statehouse. The Confederate Flag 's banning is not necessary nor appropriate. Its meaning can not hold a misinterpretation as what it used to fly over, that being the confederate flag. The confederate flag represented the confederacy just as any flag of any country would represent any other group or country, state, club, etc.

For the past few months there has been lots of controversy of wither or not the Confederate Flag should be taken down. The removal of the Confederate Flag had been brought up again because a man by the name of Dylan Roof had shot and killed 9 innocent people who were attending Bible study at the Emanuel AME in Charleston, South Carolina, Wednesday June 17, 2015. People all over the United States have been arguing over this topic, no one can agree on wither or not we should take down the flag. In my opinion the flag and any other historical monument that relates to the Civil War should be left alone.

The first action by the winner of a battle is to remove the flag of the loser, a sign of victory. A war against racism has been raging in America for nearly two hundred years. Many battles were fought in the courts and on the streets of southern cities in the 1950s and 60s. Although a new America emerged out of the birth pangs of the Civil Rights Movement, the victors did not remove the battle flags. This oversight must be remedied, The Confederate flag must never fly over any official building in the United States of America.

Is the Confederate flag a symbol of Southern Culture or a symbol of racial injustice? Dictionary.com defines symbol as “a material object representing something, often something immaterial.” When the Civil War first started, the flag became a representative of the Confederate side of the war. After the war, it was thought to be rebellion. Now, it is a symbol of the Southern culture.

When a country loses a battle, their flag is lowered and no longer flies over government buildings. In America a war against racism has been raging for many years. Although the war against racism may continue in the hearts of men for eternity, the battle against legal prejudice acts has been won. A new America emerged out of the birth pangs of the Civil Rights Movement, a seventy five year battle is over. The Confederate flag must never fly over any official building in the United States of America.

When talking about hot topics such as race, religion, sex orientation, politics and the dang confederate flag, you find out things you never knew about people. By the end of the conversation, some people might look at you differently. You might look at them differently. I realize that our culture and how we were raised, play a big part on how we feel about these topics. What the confederate flag means to one person, may be different from someone else. We need to keep in mind how sensitive some of these issues are. Before your quick to dismiss how someone feels, put yourself in that person's shoes. The problem we are facing today is whether or not the confederate flag is a symbol of hate and racism of just some peoples misunderstanding of the meaning of the flag it’s self. I think meaning of the flag is simple and straightforward ,it represents the Confederate side in the civil war. I do not think the confederate flag should be banned on private or public property for a few reasons .One reason is that the civil war a huge mark on our history that needs to be remembered. Local governments must make sure all bodies in the community are happy, otherwise, the unhappiness of its citizens will start to affect other areas of concern for the government, like crime and the welfare of the community. If public spaces are for all of the public, then local governments must make sure that no citizen finds the artwork or monuments displayed in public areas offensive or harmful in any way. By doing this, the government ensures happy citizens and a comfortable environment for all.
