About 150 years ago, the Civil War ended, and Reconstruction era began. African American slaves were free, but were looked at as different than everybody else. It wasn’t until the late 1950s and early 60s that African Americans finally felt equal to whites. Today, even though slavery and segregation has ended in the United States, racism is an extremely important topic. African Americans and people of other races are still facing the problems they did 100 years ago. One symbol of this is the Confederate flag. The Confederacy supported slavery, a now proclaimed ‘unconstitutional’ act. The Confederate flag is still being flown in some Southern states today, and they are offending thousands of United States citizens. The Confederate flag should be taken down in all public places because it represents a crude act of African American labor, it is used by white supremacist groups, and represents a rebellious group of people. These people make African Americans and blacks feel terrible for their existence. The Klan kills and disrupts an innocent race of people. Their symbols or marks left behind on society include a burning cross and the Confederate flag. One of the main reasons why the Klan wanted the Confederacy to live on and rise from the ashes was because they wanted whites to be the rulers of the world. Rebecca Zissou also said in her article, “Heritage or Hate”, “If the flag weren’t a racist symbol, they add, hate groups like the Klu Klux Klan wouldn’t wave it”. If people are raising a flag on a regular day bases that represents a group that intimidates and threatens African Americans, how does that represent the rich heritage of the Southern United States? It doesn’t represent heritage, so the rebel flag shouldn’t be flying on public property because it tells the rest of the world that part of America still stands for discrimination and
