Confederate monuments, are they good or bad, should we keep them or tear them down. The statues are a big conflict between is it offensive or we need it. One statue supported slavery which angered or offended people who lived in the area, slaves were held in camps (landrieu). Statues like that should be taken down only, one that support anti slavery or something good should stay up. Some confederate monuments should stay up, they are a historical symbol. Conflict is starting to break in cities and towns are arguing to keep or get rid of these statues. If we take the monuments down we might lose memory the victories or defeats the statue stands for. Just imagine, if a statute of you was being taken down, but the reason was because your
Confederate statues depict anti-abolitionists as heroes and very honorable men, therefore they should be removed. These men who are depicted as heroes fought for the institution of slavery. These statues not only glorify anti-abolitionists but they remind people of the strong racism of the time. Many people fight for the removal of these statues for the sole reason that they “serve as constant reminders of institutional racism, segregation and
Attention Grabber: Due to the recent events that took place in Charlottesville, North Carolina, the discussion on whether or not the Confederate monuments and symbolism should be removed has come about. In this speech, I will give you some more information on the benefits and disadvantages to both removing and keeping the statues and flags.
A recent hot-button subject in the media has been what to do with Confederate monuments in the South. After the removal of a statue honoring Robert E. Lee, a general in the Confederate Army considered by many to be a hero for the part he played in the American Civil War, a clear divide has formed over whether it was the right thing to do. Some agree with this choice, calling the statues remnants from a time of racial oppression in the United States. Others are outraged, considering it desecration of their proud history. Still others don't understand either side of the issue, and see it as a pointless feud. It is imperative to understand that to many people, these are more than just statues. Whether their impression is positive or negative, this issue goes beyond physical monuments.
First, removing all these statues and monuments cost a lot of money and take a long time. For example, The cost to remove all the monuments and statues in New Orleans could cost $600,000. Thats a lot of money for one city to pay for, and that money could be used for more important things. Another reason I feel that we should keep these statues and monuments because it’s a part of our history. Yes, the Confederacy did believe in slavery, but it isn’t about honoring slavery. It’s about understanding that this is what we once were as a nation. Keeping this symbolizes how far we’ve come as a country and how much we’ve progressed. Taking these monuments down would be in a way an attempt to erase our
In order for America to evolve with the history, the best option would be to keep the Confederate monuments in the eye of the public only if a supplemental plaque is added since this solution could work in the favor of most of the nation and will be able to satisfy their basic needs. White supremacists have not only spoken about unhesitantly hurting others for wanting to remove these Confederate monuments, but dozens of them have committed to unspeakable crimes of violence to preserve the meaning behind the statues. This is a very complex matter that can be mentally, physically, and economically fatal to the United States’ citizens and the future generations to come. Countless blood-soaked homicidal videos and pictures roam the world wide
One of the biggest controversies of the summer that I saw on the news and heard about was the taking down of the confederate flag. Many called for the removal of the confederate flag on many of the state buildings that were public, even top retail stores such as Wal-Mart and Amazon pulled images of the confederate flag from their stores and websites. However, in my opinion yes the confederate flag should be taken down from public state buildings but the flag should not be taken down from Civil War related museums or other things such as that. The flag has a very strong history behind it, and in this world today I feel like people would rather be politically correct on issues rather than teaching the actual history behind things such as the
Confederate statues have become a hot topic in today’s headlines. Whether it is a certain group sees the statues as a disgrace where others see them as a memorial to American history, it’s now a huge debate on who is on the correct side of the fence. This topic can be fairly difficult to understand the reasoning from either side, especially being that I am from Kentucky, a neutral state during the Civil War.
Today I would like to talk about the removal of the confederate monuments. The war ended one-hundred and fifty years ago, these monuments have been standing for quite some time now. These monuments are set to honor those who fought for HUMAN rights. These monuments stand for a very dark part of American history and now they are being taken down because we as a nation simply cannot handle different opinions. I understand that some people see these monuments as a celebration of those who fought pro-slavery, but some also think that they are to celebrate the overcoming of such a horrendous time in our history; these are opinions and every single person is entitled to one. That doesn't mean we disregard such a huge part of what sculpted America
I believe that confederate monuments should be kept up. They do represent harsh times but they are a great representation of what we should not do. Therefore, they should be kept up.
Well i believe confederate statues should be removed the reason being is because one of main things these statues are causing is well controversy between two groups of people. The first group being those who believe they should not be removed and the second being those who believe they should be removed. Personally I think this is something which people shouldn't be stressing about or getting mad over. Because they're just statues yes i am aware that these statues have been put up in memory of our history, and I respect that but removing these monuments will just end it all, all the problems being caused, all everything.
Many have their own views from their own experiences on the matter of the confederate statutes being taken down, the main argument among them being the meanings behind these memorials. The most vocal and main argument is that the confederate statues were put up originally as monuments so they should be taken down due to their disagreeable intent. The other main argument, but less popular one, is that they should stay up because they are honoring American “heroes”. However, a more reasonable side argues that, although, they were made as monuments they became memorials and we should preserve them in a way that’ll keep both sides happy and preserve the history behind them. This is the contextualized view, as discussed in Gary Shapiro’s “The Meaning
The first reason the confederate flag should be taken down off government property is, because it is racist. The whole reason the confederacy was formed was, because the south wanted to keep state's power over the federal government, so in effect they could keep the slaves. Anybody that flies this flag states he or she is for slavery. The flag symbolizing racism is undeniable. In fact, the KKK was alongside the confederate army and slavery ended the same year that the civil war ended. The flag has never been used for good purposes other than to represent white supremacy. The confederacy is in some american’s heritage. However, whether confederate soldiers that fought had owned slaves or not they were still fighting to keep slavery legal. Even
The problem is whether or not confederate statues should be taken down or be left standing in their original places. According to the Washington post Barbra Lee stated that these confederate statues are hate symbols. I disagree that they should be removed but rather kept in their original place. These statues are not supposed to be interpreted as hate symbols, but rather they are our country’s history. These confederate soldiers and commanders are the stepping stones for America to be what it is now. Without these confederate individuals America would not be the same.
In New Orleans, and other places, statues of confederate generals have been removed from public. Certain parts of history have also been removed from history books and novels. I disagree with this act of trying to remove the losing side of history. We may disagree with the enemy, but that doesn’t mean that we get to erase them. The right thing to do is to present the facts and if you are truly on the right side, then people will agree with you. Just because you do not like what the opposite side did, doesn’t mean that it didn’t happen. Yes, confederates were on the wrong and losing side of history, but that doesn’t give us the right to remove them from history. Firstly, we can not hold the past to the same standards
Confederate monuments are an embarrassment to our country, our citizens, and past soldiers who aren’t being honored in the same way. Day by day these memorials split this country up more and more. None of these monuments were put up after the Civil War they actually started popping up during the Civil Rights Movement. Both of these events are nearly 90 years apart, almost 10 decades! Most monuments began to erect because of The Daughters of Confederacy. Our country should be rid of all Confederate Monuments they falsely portray The Civil War, honor slavery, and symbolize white supremacy.
