Today when you turn on the news station when you turn on a news broadcast, you can count on seeing the familiar sight of some conflict between the US and Russia. We as modern Americans been raised in a country where a rivalry with Russia simply is. With it holding so much attention in modern political debate and discussion, it makes sense that the origin of the US’s ongoing rivalry with Russia would be the main shift since the Reconstruction Era. This origin as a formal and single event is often considered to be the original condemnation of the October Revolution by President Hoover. This is the single largest shift in the past century.

A simple disagreement of governing and economic styles 100 years ago has lead to modern threats relating weapons of mass destruction.
The second major result of our disagreement with the USSR is the formation of the United States’ closest allies into one organised alliance, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation or NATO “was created in 1949 by the United States, Canada, and several Western European nations to provide collective security against the Soviet Union.” per the government website on history. The Soviet Union is directly quoted as being the main reason for a major alliance’s formation. This has been a massive asset to the United States amongst other members in security against large mutual enemies by leveraging size and also in working as a larger crisis response organization that takes issues from a single standpoint, national issue to a nearly global topic in need of action. When working together, the size and reputation of NATO allows the members to better those it oversees with more forceful methods. Recent actions like US bombings in Syria to counteract reports of chemical weapons used on their own people would be seen as a war for human rights, not policing for human rights. Currently there are 18,000 NATO soldiers working around the world to assist governments like Afghanistan and maintaining security in the Mediterranean Sea.
