Short stories are intricately planned and can be interpreted several different ways. However, some characteristics of the story are more prominent and have a greater impact on the reader. Throughout the short story, “The Story of an Hour,” Kate Chopin utilizes the setting, irony, and the conflict. By analyzing the setting, irony, and conflict within the it provides a uniqueness to the story. When analyzing “The Story of an Hour,” the setting is an overlooked role. The story takes place in the late 1800s- early 1900s, which helps to understand the female role during this time period. When Mrs. Mallard was notified that her husband was involved in the train accident, she began to cry out. However, the audience later discovers that she feels free and is ecstatic about the death of her husband. This is an example of situational irony because her reaction was not the typical response to finding out the death of a loved one. This aspect left the story with a sense of suspense. Her overwhelming sense of joy over the death of Mr. Mallard was due to her finally coming to the realization that she was free and could live a life exploring and admiring because she was a widower. It is also situational irony that Mrs. Mallard was the one who ended up dying at the end of the story when the audience and characters believed Mr. Mallard was dead the whole time. Another example of irony demonstrated in the story is when Mrs. Mallard’s sister says, “Louise, open the door! I beg; open the door--you will make yourself ill. What are you doing, Louise? For heaven’s sake open the door!” (Chopin. 1894, p.8). Yet, in the beginning of the story the audience discovers that she is already ill with heart issues.
