In the end of one of Shakespeare's most well-known play, a “pair of star-crossed lovers take their life”. These lovers are known as Romeo and Juliet and belong to opposing families, the Capulets and the Montagues. The blood feud between these powerful families have been disrupting the peace of Verona for years and has caused complications for the couple to be together. Thus, they hatched a plan to fake Juliet’s death so that she can escape to a city called Mantua, where Romeo lives, away from the chaos of Verona and the conflicts between their kin. However, the communication between them ran into some obstacles along the way and in the end, both lovers ended up killing themselves after hearing the news of each others death! Many believe that the outcome of the play “Romeo and Juliet” was a result of fate. Yet in reality, most of the elements that lead to their demise were really consequences of free will decisions. This brings the question, did Romeo and Juliet pass away because they were “star-crossed lovers” and that they were destined to die the way they did, or did they only perish because they made the wrong choices? For the reason that both Romeo and Juliet made decisions that lead to their deaths with open knowledge of the consequences that could follow, I have reason to believe that the outcome of Shakespeare's tragedy “Romeo and Juliet” was a result of free will. First off, Romeo had a major role in his and Juliet’s demise and made many free will decisions that
From the very prologue of Romeo and Juliet, we are informed by Shakespeare that these two “star-cross’d lovers” are going to “take their life”. For the rest of the play, we are left to observe how they kill themselves and who or what leads them into doing so. However, placing the blame on one person or event would be impossible, as nobody was directly responsible for their demise. Instead, everything that could possibly have gone wrong did go wrong. Although both Romeo and Juliet end up thinking it was their own decision to kill themselves, there were many other factors that unwittingly forced them into the situation they eventually found themselves.
Fate is a hidden, but unavoidable force that leads to certain consequences in people’s lives. The theme of fate plays a crucial role in the main characters of the play, Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare. Romeo and Juliet share a destiny that dooms them to tragic deaths immediately after the exchange of their zealous love. Despite their resolute attempts to challenge their destiny, the lovers still succumb to the inexorable powers of fate. In the Shakespearean play, Romeo and Juliet, the principle of fate propels the lovers together with infatuation, tears them apart through a bitter demise, yet, ensures peace in Verona for many future generations.
The death of Romeo and Juliet was partially because of free will. The fact that Romeo and Juliet got married knowing that there was a bitter feud between their families, the Montague and Capulet’s. This feud brought on many problems, such as the murder of Tybalt by Romeo. Juliet knew that this might be a problem for Her and Romeo. Juliet had said: “What’s in a name”? Which explains her ill fate of being a Capulet and Romeo being a Montague. When Romeo tells his servant “ Ay, mine own
In William Shakespeare’s tragedy Romeo and Juliet, we meet the characters and how their actions led to a tragedy. Romeo and Juliet met, end up falling in love, and – since both cannot dream of living without the other – take their lives. While the play ends in a tragic death for both characters, it was their own reckless decisions; though others might believe that it was destiny that played a large role in the lovers’ downfall. However, the majority of the text evidence points to them making their own choices leading to their demise.
Everyone wants to marry the love of their life. Seeking the approval of our family and friends, we all look ahead fondly at the idea of living a long and happy life with our soulmate. Unfortunately, in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet this is not the way life played out.
William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet focus on the two young lovers, Romeo and Juliet, who fall in love and die within a span of three days. Romeo and Juliet illustrate how the love brings them together to over power the control of their relationship. The moment that Romeo and Juliet declare their love for one another, they try to keep their love a secret since they are the children of the feuding families, the Montagues and the Capulets. Initially their families would be outraged against their relationship that Romeo and Juliet propose to hide the truth of their love. Once Romeo and Juliet reveal to the Nurse and Friar Lawrence their plans to marry, their relationship is nothing but a risk of problems. Romeo is unafraid to show his love that he teases Tybalt teasing him about falling in love with Juliet, although not explicitly. However, the deaths of Mercutio and Tybalt, occur when Romeo and Juliet take actions to protect themselves, but they are not however, protected. Juliet protects her relationship by committing a false death only for Romeo to believe it as true. As a result, the act to protect Romeo and Juliet’s relationship a secret are examples of the failed actions both Romeo and Juliet try to prevent; however, it is not ‘fate’ that control their lives and deaths.
First, the outcome of the play “Romeo and Juliet” was due to free will because of choices made by the friar. The
Was Romeo and Juliet written in the stars or an act of freewill? Many argue that Romeo and Juliet's death was fate taking its course, but I disagree. Romeo and Juliet in my opinion was not an act of fate, but an act of freewill because of many things the characters could have done to stop the tragedy that was their undoing. In general, Romeo and Juliet's deaths were not an act of fate, but free will because of the choices the characters got throughout the story and the horrible judgement Romeo and Juliet had.
The love that Romeo and Juliet had for one another was free will instead of fate. There are many reasons why it was in fact free will that brought the two lovers together instead of fate. An example of free will in the story is when Romeo agrees to attend the Capulet's party
Good intentions (trying to help) leading to tragic consequences is a major part of William
Throughout time, there have been many tragedies that began with a blooming romance - a prominent example being the story of two ‘star-crossed lovers’ (Prologue to Romeo and Juliet, 6), Romeo and Juliet, authored by William Shakespeare. The selfless and raw love shown between Romeo and Juliet contrasts strongly with the hate that fills their city of Verona. While the pair played a large part in their ultimate deaths through choosing to end their lives, many minor characters had contributing roles, such as Friar Laurence, Balthasar and Mercutio. However, the decisions and sacrifices that Romeo and Juliet made to be with each other also led to their shocking suicides.
Although Romeo killing himself was freewill, in “Romeo & Juliet” I agree that Romeo and Juliet are victims of fate due to their families hate for one another, Romeo's banishment, and Juliets timing to wake up,
In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet there is a very important theme. That is the theme of fate. What fate is basically what your destiny is, which you can not control. Fate is very crucial to the development of the story. Certain things in the story would not have happened unless fate had determined it.
In William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, the deaths of Romeo and Juliet were tragedies that resulted from several factors, both people and ideas. Their parents, the Capulets and the Montagues, are accountable for the deaths of their children, along with Romeo and Juliet themselves. Juliet was oppressed by her parents by being forced to marry a man she didn't love. She and Romeo were prohibited from sharing their love with each other, and they were aware of this. They caused the conflict by continuing to follow their love for each other. These people were solely responsible for the fatal outcome. Fate also played a key role in creating the calamity in Verona. The characters and the concept of fate manipulated the events that led to the
Destiny is no matter of chance. It’s a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved,” quoted by William Jennings Bryan. One of the most debated questions in history is whether our lives are ruled by fate or by own choice. William Shakespeare brings this question into play in his production Romeo and Juliet. Although fate does seam to be ruling over every situation, I believe that choice has more to do with this story then it’s really credited to. Even in the opening lines, this play drills into your head the inevitable outcome of the two lover’s deaths. When the chorus uses the phrase Star crossed lovers (I, 1,6) it clearly shows William Shakespeare’s thoughts on what killed Romeo and Juliet. This
