Embodiment of religious notions of good and evil. One of the main Christian concept is the one of temptation caused by the dual nature of humanity hence the concept of evil hiding in the light. This can be seen throughout the entire novella with the onomastic name of Hyde, as pointed out by Utterson’s pun, can also mean “hide”. Evil was therefore hiding, lurking, within Dr Jekyll the entire time but was emphasised by strict moral value and finally set free with Dr Jekyll transgressive experiments. This transgression to the natural and universal orders seem to affect his surroundings, the night is now “accursed”. The “constellations looked down upon (him)”, he defies God for he admits he had defied his “unsleeping vigilance”. This extract describes how the transformation operates on multiple level including the metaphorical one, it has also a highly religious value, showing the metaphorical meaning of good and evil and how it can be read as a cautionary tale of hubris. Now this story does not follow Dr. Jekyll through his journey of creating his evil alter ego. Moreover he is not even the first initial character that we are introduced to in the novella; we are first introduced to a man named Mr. Utterson. He is actually the lawyer of Dr. Jekyll and he takes an interest in his newfound protégé who is referred to as Mr. Hyde. His negative feelings towards Mr. Hyde, beget a personal investigation into his life and his connection to Dr. Jekyll. Sadly he does not realize the truth behind the mystery of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde till the end of the novella, where he finally discovers the secret from reading Dr. Jekyll’s last words written in a letter addressed to him after Dr. Jekyll’s untimely death.

Jekyll confesses to Mr. Utterson that he and Mr. Hyde hate each other. For instance, Dr. Jekyll starts to hate Mr. Hyde when he says “goodbye for ever Mr. Hyde” (64). Dr. Jekyll says goodbye to his evil side. He loathes his evil side because Hyde has shown Jekyll and Hyde’s capability to murder. Furthermore, Mr. Hyde detests Dr. Jekyll because he’s a prisoner inside Dr. Jekyll’s body. In addition, the narrator states that, “Hyde and Jekyll now hate each other with equal passion” (69). Mr. Hyde’s imprisonment within Dr. Jekyll’s body makes Mr. Hyde dislike him, so he tears Dr. Jekyll’s books (69). Jekyll talks about the years before the creation of the potion that transforms him into Hyde. He summarises his finding of the dual nature, human beings are half good and half evil. Jekyll’s goal in his experiments is to separate two opposite elements, creating a person with only good characteristics and a being of only evil. He does this because he wants to free his good side from dark urges. He fails this experiment, in fact he only manages to create a whole evil person ‘Mr Hyde’. In the letter, Jekyll says ‘I learned to recognise the thorough and primitive duality of man . . . if I could rightly be said to be either, it was only because I was radically both.’ The events of the novel inform the reader that the dark side (Hyde) is much stronger than the rest of Jekyll, this is why Hyde is able to take over Jekyll. This letter is really important for the reader so that the whole novel is understood. A lot of horror is created and it is all quiet in the reader's mind. In both genres the man and woman took a life, killed a person and had no regret. However, in the late nineteenth century in London, England Dr. Henry Jekyll dark side is kept under control. The dark half of him has a vicious appetite to do evil. There is no love lost between Jekyll and Hyde. Edward Hyde enjoys the tasteful lust of violence. His barbaric cold expression is noted by Mr. Utterson. The first impression Mr. Utterson got from Hyde, Hyde’s a friend to Satan. In spite of Dr. Jekyll honorable personality, fear grips Mr. Utterson mind. Mr. Hyde dwarfish appearance and bold displeasing smile is cause enough for Mr. Utterson to fear for Jekyll safety and involvement with such an evil man.

Everyone has to deal with some sort of temptations in their lives. Usually temptations are negative, but they may differ depending on the person. Some people may not like to admit this but everyone has a dark side and sometimes it shows. A person needs to let out some darkness at some points in their lives because nobody should bottle their emotions up. One man’s dark temptations are looked at in The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. In this novel, it starts out introducing Mr.Utterson who is a lawyer. He is walking with his cousin Mr. Enfield and they find a door which leads them to a house. Mr. Enfield starts telling a story and that is how Mr.Hyde and Dr.Jekyll are introduced. “ All at once, I saw two figures: one a little man who was stumping along eastward at a good walk, and the other a girl of maybe eight or ten who was running as hard as she was able down a cross street. Well, sir, the two ran into one another naturally enough at a corner; and then came the horrible part of the thing; for the man trampled calmly over the child’s body and left her screaming on the ground” (Stevenson 9). Mr. Utterson becomes curious as to who the person was and after doing some investigating he discovers that Dr.Jekyll is Mr.Hyde. Dr.Jekyll wanted a way to let out the bad that he had inside of him, but he didn 't want anyone to see him differently. He decided to make a potion, and when he drank the potion he would turn into Mr.Hyde.

The fight between good and evil has been a topic discussed and argued time after time. It is believed we have both good and bad in us, in a quote from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix the character Sirius Black said, “We’ve got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That’s who we really are.” Mankind has been trying to make better with their actions, stay to the light side, to be good. An example of this is the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde has inspired many other stories; people use it as a comparison as well. Courtney Davidson is just one of many. She and Dr. Jekyll may not have much in common, however, they would both agree on the quote, previously stated,

Utterson saw Jekyll since they were good friends he saw that this person in front of him was not his good friend. Dr.jekyll the good the kind and Hyde is turning him into a dark, and evil person. During the story Hyde’s actions compounds our first impressions of him. Stevenson never says exactly what Hyde takes pleasure in on his nightly forays but it is thought to be of things that would ruin Jekyll’s reputation if they ever came out. There is thought to be strong ties to drugs, alcohol addiction and other dangerous dealings; ‘he had once visited her (the maid’s) master and for whom she had conceived a dislike’. In the very first chapter, Mr Enfield tells his friend, Mr Utterson, a story where he witnessed a strange looking man walking along a deserted street, who ‘trampled calmly over (a) child’s body and left her screaming on the ground’ when they collided.

Sometimes do you feel you are two people in the same body? It may be quite possible if one minute you act sweet and nice to person and in the next minute you are angry and mean. Like someone may look at you different and think you are a crazy person. This was the case with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll was kind and in relationship with the love of his life. Mr. Hyde comes along, in the same body, after taking a secret potion and becomes this evil man. Once it was all said and done, Mr. Hyde destroyed Dr. Jekyll life and career.

Jekyll and Mr. Hyde not only conflicting forces but also affected by each other and dual natures. The book is written in only Dr. Jekyll’s perspective, so this paragraph will going to explain about Dr. Jekyll. Existence of Hyde provokes to know him more or to have a hard time (Suffered, wanted to destroy Mr. Hyde). In the story, Mr. Hyde couldn’t control himself and committed a crime. “Well, sir, the two ran into one another naturally enough at the corner; and then came the horrible part of things; for the man trampled calmly over the child’s body.” (Stevenson 3). Through this, Dr. Jekyll was suspected to blackmailed by Mr. Hyde, which decreases his social status and it could bring him big influence during Victorian era. Not only negative effect, but also positive effect exists. For instance, in beginning of the story, Dr. Jekyll has a lot of inner conflict, and due to that conflict, he seems always unorganized. “The thoughts of his mind, besides, were of the gloomiest dye; and when he glanced at the companion of his drive he was conscious of some touch of that terror of the law and the law’s officers which may at times assail the most honest.” (Stevenson 22). In the movie Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter has an internal fight between himself and the Dark Lord named Lord Voldemort. Harry is seen as the light and Voldemort as the dark. A character from the movie, Sirius Black, says, “We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That’s who we really are.” A girl named Courtney Davidson was a former hazer in her high school, but later on regretted and was remorseful for her acts. In the novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Jekyll is a natural balance of good and evil, but Hyde is Jekyll’s completely ruthless alter ego. The knowledge I have on these two individuals, Courtney Davidson and Dr. Jekyll, would lead me to believe that yes they both would agree with Sirius Black’s quote.

Dr. Henry Jekyll in Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886) seems to be an enthusiastic scientist just as Shelley describes Victor Frankenstein. Though Victor Frankenstein reports his own story to Captain Walton, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is narrated by different points of view, mainly from lawyer Utterson, a close friend of Jekyll and in charge of executing Jekyll’s last will. Thus, no background of Jekyll is provided. In fact, it is only mentioned that he lives in a splendid home in 19th century London with multiple rooms and a laboratory, and that he has servants to his dispose.
