Many financiers these days come from privileged backgrounds. Finance is usually associated with the stock market, high pay, prestigious colleges, and something that only the middle and upper class can take advantage of. We rarely, if ever hear stories of many ambitious homeless people that succeed in the field of finance. It is indeed rare, but it is highly possible for them to succeed with the support of the community. This is why we, The Covenant House, are here to help teenagers get their life back on track to succeed in what they enjoy doing.
Chris Gardner (born February 9, 1954) is an investor, entrepreneur, speaker, stockbroker, and philanthropist. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Thomas Turner and Bettye Gardner. He has an older half-sister and two sisters. His biological father was away in Louisiana and his stepfather was very abusive to him and his family. Although there was a lot of conflict at home, Chris’s mother was a never ending source of motivation and courage to Chris. He enlisted in the US Navy as a corpsman shortly after graduating high school. There he met Dr. Robert Ellis who gave Gardner a position as a research associate in San Francisco. Chris married Sherry Dyson on June 18, 1977 and became a father to Christopher Gardner Jr.

He did not have any connections or degrees to help him get a well paying job although he was fascinated by finance. Chris realized that he had to start ground up from very low paying training programs at brokerages. He wanted custody of his son because he always wanted to be a good father to his kids. Although Gardner managed to get a spot on the Dean Witter Reynolds training program, the salary was not enough for him and his son. Gardner had to stay at temporary housing to sleep and put his son at a church shelter
When he grows up in Milwaukee in the 1950s, Chris Gardner had an abusive, alcoholic stepfather. INCORRECTOnce, while his stepfatherthreatensGardner and his mother with a gun, his mother retaliated by saying she would burn the house down. For a while, Gardner slept on the streets while helooksfor a job. He found most jobs boring and, because he did not have a college degree, was not considered for many positions. Gardner finally got a job with a financial firm in San Francisco, but he makes a trainee's salary while trying to pay the bills for his young family. During the weekends, while his co-workers watch TV or playing ball, Gardner worked odd jobs to try to make ends meet. In the meantime, Gardner gets parking tickets he couldn't pay. This

Wayland Baptist isn’t a big university as in matter of fact the main campus is in Plainview. It has a community of 25,000 on the high plains of west Texas between Lubbock and Amarillo.
This video was originally an assignment I made for my college’s TV station. I wanted to explore the history of Friendship House, a unique, little-known piece of historical architecture in my home town, and tell the story of how it came to be at the college, while raising awareness of this one-of-a-kind landmark in my area.
Chris Langan could be the most intelligent man in America. He is the oldest of four boys who all have different fathers. Chris never knew his father, but he did know his mother’s fourth husband who was Jack Langan. Jack Langan was a failed journalist who would get jobs and lose them, moved the family around a lot, and he would drink and disappear. He would also lock the boys out of the cabinets as well as bullwhip them so they would stay in line. Chris’s family was so poor that in Outliers, he says, “To this day I haven’t met anybody who was as poor when they were kids as our family was. We didn’t have a pair of matching socks.” (91) When he grew up, he went to live on a farm. He was never published, never became a professor, never became
In spite of Chris’s pleasant childhood and a job he loved, he felt as if he was meant to do more for himself and
In the quote from Thoreau it says “I sat at a table where were rich food and wine in abundance, an obsequious attendance, but sincerity and truth were not…” (Krakauer 117). This quote lets the reader infer that Chris had been lied to by his parents. Chris found out that his father had had a previous marriage that he was not told about. Chris was denied the truth which led to the non-existent relationship between Chris and his parents.
What seems most hurtful and regrettable is Chris’ resentment towards the parents who did so much for him. Chris spent two years with no contact, and now they will never be able to see him again. His childishness clouded his judgment, and caused him to rewrite history, convincing him that his parents were his enemy when instead, they were supportive and proud of Chris. It was shameful “that a kid with so much compassion could his parents so much pain”(104). His travels seemed to be an escape from his family, and a reactionary revenge against his comfortable life. Something strange was happening to him, he became resentful of the life offered
Behind his selfish ambitions to find himself, Chris had his fair share of family problems that contributed to his decision to go into the wild. Krakauer wrote “Chris’s smoldering anger, it turns out, was fueled by a discovery he’d made two summers earlier… Chris pieced together the facts of his father's previous marriage and subsequent divorce…” he wrote, “Long after falling in love with Billie...Walt continued his relationship with Marcia in secret…” (pg.121) In short Chris knew that his father's previous life had turned into his secret side life, away from Chris and his mother. Chris kept his father secret to himself, never
Transferring from a two-year institution to one of the most protégées HBCU's in this country was one of the best life decision I could've made. The astrosphere at my HBCU is second to none. At the point when untouchables specify my establishment first thing that comes to the theme is the legendary "Marching Storm" or our world-class nursing program yet this is simply to give some examples. But with all these incredible trademarks I as an understudy still face worries about foundations with living arrangements, financial aid, and the absence of the educational programs field to consider in. These are just a few concerns to name that rarely gets the mention by outsiders looking in that I as a Prairie
He succeeded in getting good grades at school but defied the rules his teachers laid out for him. Chris learned guitar, piano, and french-horn as he was growing up. He later became a talented French-horn player, and was a member of the American University Symphony. Chris succeeded in forming a strong bond with his sister, Carine. Carine remembers him as her best friend. He was always there to protect her. Chris did well when he played sports. He never kept up playing them though, because he didn't agree with the rules and techniques. In high school, Chris was the captain of his Cross Country team. He set standards for himself to run his best. If he didn't succeed, he would be disappointed with himself. Chris thought he could do anything, all it required was for him to decide to do it. He once told a friend that they could raise the money to travel to South Africa to fight apartheid. On the weekends, McCandless would stay away from trying to sneak into bars, and instead talk to homeless people and prostitutes. Chris succeeded in trying to improve their lives. During Chris's junior year, he was hired by a building contractor and became a successful salesman. He was a prized
Chris Gardner excels at his stockbroker internship in Dean-Witter, earning the attention and respect from his superiors. However, his personal life plunges exponentially. He loses his money and has to resort to sleeping in homeless shelters and subway station bathrooms. He begins to think that happiness can never really be achieved, but he is proved wrong when he feels happy
Chris is a charismatic young man, but takes extensive measures to ensure he does not become too close with anyone. By going out into the wild without so much as a letter to his parents,
Covenant is promise or contract between two parties with certain set of conditions. Sometimes one of the parties involved could be stronger than the other. For example, in the case of the covenant between God and Israel, or other that, an agreement can be between two people at the same position or level. The covenants can be either conditional or unconditional. In this essay, I will discuss the use of Covenant as a way that people relate with God as well as the way people relate among themselves through Covenants.
However, being a father as a single parent like Chris gives him the enthusiasm to do his best and replace his wife's role to have a better life with his son. Yet, this decreases the happiness that Gardner possesses. According to Scott Coltrane, a sociologist at the University of California, points out that "Father's style of parenting has changed too. Fathers are beginning to look more like mothers" (qtd. in Cullen and Grossman). Before Linda leaves the family, she works double shifts to make more money to afford the living expenses and to help her husband. So Chris is the one who takes more care of their son than the mother, Linda. Gardner seems to be happier being close to his son. There are many scenes in the movie that show how Gardner and Christopher are happy of being together. Nonetheless, there is only one scene that Christopher not even misses his mother; instead he asks "did mom leave because of me?" (The Pursuit of Happyness). This indicates that Gardner does a great job of being a single parent that makes his son, not remembering his mother.
