We all get to see a glimpse of it every day, as many Oregonians have it as their license plate. That little picture on the license plate of course being Crater Lake; the ninth deepest lake in the United States (Reichemann). Crater Lake formed thousands of years ago due to a mountain erupting. Throughout the National Park we could see remains of rocks and minerals from the explosion. Crater Lake is one of the nicest and monumental lakes throughout the Pacific North West.
About 7,700 years ago, Mount Mazama erupted on itself after building upon itself and reaching an impressive height of 12,000 feet. The aftermath of the collapse left a crater more than 2000 feet deep and 6 miles wide (Reichmann)! The rocks and minerals from the Mount Mazama
Lake Natron is situated at the base of Africa’s only active volcano Oldonyo Lengai (Mountain of God). The lake lies in the northeast of Tanzania in between the Ngorongoro Highlands and Serengeti plains.
The youngest of these rocks are dated at about 220,000 years ago. Rhyodacties and quartz latites in the modern caldera area extruded from about 320,000 years ago to 260,000 years ago, and then silica-rich rhyolites at Glass Mountain northeast of the caldera erupted from about 210,000 years ago to 80,000 years ago. The scattered distribution of the initial mafic eruptions indicates that they were erupted from the mantle, while the slightly younger domes and flows were from a deep-crustal source. The youngest rhyolite eruptions erupted at the northeast rim of the caldera at Glass Mountain and were the first activity of the silicic Long Valley magma chamber (Bailey, et. al., 1989).
For the decades the first nation peoples are not being treated properly. Whether in terms of signing treaties or getting compensation of using their water from shoal lake 40. The Canadian government has carried out against Indigenous people, their land and their water as well. A centaury ago when the demand for water was increasing in Winnipeg city because of growing population , the federal government forcefully captured their reserve land on shoal lake 40 in order to construct aquaduct which is used to carry water extracted from shoal lake into the Winnipeg city. The federal government did not think about the consequences the first nation people will face who actually depend on shoal lake for their survival. T
The Battle of Lake Champlain was an important victory because it created a dent in the British plan to invade from the North and it ultimately convinced the British to surrender the War of 1812, which caused the US to gain worldwide respect. To begin, the British had been trying to invade America from the south, but they had very little success. They then decided to try and invade from the North, using Plattsburg, a city on the shores of Lake Champlain, as their headquarters for the invasion. This is why it was so vital that the US won the Battle of Lake Champlain because it hurt the British plan to invade by destroying a major part of their plan. This also convinced them that it would be too difficult and expensive for the benefit they would
As a gateway community to Texas Hill Country and Lake Travis, Lake Pointe is in an ideal location. Just 12 miles west of all the employers, entertainment, and cultural opportunities of downtown Austin, Lake Pointe is a carefully planned community that has just been built in the past 10 years or so. Developed near Highway 71 and Bee Cave Road, Lake Pointe is able to boast a great location as well as homes that are both more spacious and more affordable than many of the properties available within the city boundaries. Lake Pointe has always been popular with families who want plenty of space and clean, safe living while also enjoying all the amenities of Austin. Families also adore the fact that Lake Pointe is part of the prestigious Lake Travis School District.
One of Barry Counties most visited and largest lakes is none other than Gun Lake. The lakefront is home to a deep Indian history that reflects the extensive development of the surrounding area over the years. The lake is a key area in Barry County for recreation and tourism, but its rich history is its most important aspect.
Set high in the Adirondack Mountains range, Lake Placid, a sizeable freshwater lake, lends its name to the village which lies on its shores. Ripe with history, Lake Placid has flourished as an Olympic Village since its settlement in the nineteenth century. Over the course of these last two-hundred years, residents have built and rebuilt Lake Placid Homes which have experienced history in the making firsthand.
Lake Tonetta is polluted! Help us close it down before it’s too late! That's what the concern citizens think. However, I can prove otherwise. We think Lake Tonetta is healthy. So we conducted multiple experiments to prove our hypothesis is correct such as pH.
Many millions of years ago the Sierra Nevada was filled with ocean water until sediments began collecting and formed mountain ranges. Over a large period of time, the mountains began to wear out and became immersed in the ocean once again. Many different particles and materials began to make layers and created the first mountain system. After the Jurassic era, “…new strata were folded and crumpled and invaded by molten granite from below” (Beatty, 1943). A large
After more then 40,000 years of activity, one would expect that people would no longer live in the surrounding shadow of Mt. St. Helens. But regardless, many towns and cities sit inside of a zone that would face destruction if a large eruption took place. In 1980 Mt. St. Helens erupted and caused the loss of many lives and the destruction of thousands of miles of land and property. Following the eruption, the volcano has stayed extremely active. In 2004 it erupted again, building a new lava dome and sending ash and steam into the atmosphere. Since then, seismologists and volcanologists have recently discovered pockets of magma rising and that another eruption may occur soon. Even though the people of Washington know that an eruption could cause widespread devastation they continue with their lives, doing little to prepare for the potential disaster.
Lake Tahoe holds a dear place in my heart because it is one of the most often destinations for our family vacations. I lost count of how many times I have been there. For every occasion, it is just the place to go to. It is such a relaxing place, at least for the weekend I do not have to worry about anything. Lake Tahoe is a very green place to be in California. California is a very dry state and having forests like Lake Tahoe is something to be proud of. It attracts thousands of visitors each year and has numerous activities to do there. Not only is Lake Tahoe extremely beautiful, but it has many ecological features.
While rafting down the Chilko River, Ron Thompson, a seasoned river guide with thirteen years of experience, had his raft high side on a rock. When the raft high sided and all but one of his guests fell out into the river. Due to the strong rapids five of the guests died. This is a tragedy that should not have happened on the river considering it is not nearly close enough to being one of the major rivers in Canada. The problem of where this happened on the river, Lava Canyon, is about how long the rapids run. The water level was approximately 2 feet lower than it typically ran. With water levels changing, rapids adjust throughout the river. When the raft hit a wake it turned on its side and hit the rock that forced people out of the raft. Some of the people were able to swim for safety, including Thompson, but sadly five drowned.
The Grand Canyon has plenty of volcanic rocks near the bottom and the top. ICR, Institute for Creative Research, has been involved in a project for years to date these volcanic rocks. this study has come a long way to show that many of the Grand Canyon strata could have formed rapidly, and that the erosion of the Canyon by the Colorado River has not been going on for millions of years.
Moraine Lake is a man made lake, located in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. The surface elevation is approximately 6181 feet above sea level. The lake is home of grizzly bears, ground squirrels, parrots and many other animals. The lake got its name from the “moraine”, a pile of glacier rocks and boulders that were formed by the Wenkchemna Glacier next to the lake. The lakes bright, blue-green color is from the light reflecting off the “rock floor.” The lake usually doesn’t open until June, when it starts melting, through early September. Moraine Lake was discovered by Walter Wilcox, a college student at Yale, hired by Tom Wilson to help map out the area around Lake Louise. Wilcox went out in search for a new route up Mount Temple. On Sunday morning, Mum and Dad decided to bring us to toboggan at Lake Mountain. We woke up at 7:45am in the morning, got changed and started our journey to Lake Mountain. As we were driving along Plenty Rd, we stopped at the Bundoora Hungry Jacks for breakfast. Although, the bacon & egg muffin was crispy, it didn't have the same taste as the normal muffin. Despite this, we continued our trip to Lake Mountain. Our adventure to Lake Mountain consisted of many winding roads and narrow roads. After two hours of driving, we reached Fernshaw and the fog was thickening but soon after, we reached Marysville. In Marysville, we hired toboggans and snow boots from the local store. After that, we made our way up the mountain and saw huge piles of snow along the side of the road. On the top of the mountain, we paid a car entry of $57 and parked the car in the car park.
