Lake Natron is situated at the base of Africa’s only active volcano Oldonyo Lengai (Mountain of God). The lake lies in the northeast of Tanzania in between the Ngorongoro Highlands and Serengeti plains.

The youngest of these rocks are dated at about 220,000 years ago. Rhyodacties and quartz latites in the modern caldera area extruded from about 320,000 years ago to 260,000 years ago, and then silica-rich rhyolites at Glass Mountain northeast of the caldera erupted from about 210,000 years ago to 80,000 years ago. The scattered distribution of the initial mafic eruptions indicates that they were erupted from the mantle, while the slightly younger domes and flows were from a deep-crustal source. The youngest rhyolite eruptions erupted at the northeast rim of the caldera at Glass Mountain and were the first activity of the silicic Long Valley magma chamber (Bailey, et. al., 1989).

After more then 40,000 years of activity, one would expect that people would no longer live in the surrounding shadow of Mt. St. Helens. But regardless, many towns and cities sit inside of a zone that would face destruction if a large eruption took place. In 1980 Mt. St. Helens erupted and caused the loss of many lives and the destruction of thousands of miles of land and property. Following the eruption, the volcano has stayed extremely active. In 2004 it erupted again, building a new lava dome and sending ash and steam into the atmosphere. Since then, seismologists and volcanologists have recently discovered pockets of magma rising and that another eruption may occur soon. Even though the people of Washington know that an eruption could cause widespread devastation they continue with their lives, doing little to prepare for the potential disaster.

Lake Tahoe holds a dear place in my heart because it is one of the most often destinations for our family vacations. I lost count of how many times I have been there. For every occasion, it is just the place to go to. It is such a relaxing place, at least for the weekend I do not have to worry about anything. Lake Tahoe is a very green place to be in California. California is a very dry state and having forests like Lake Tahoe is something to be proud of. It attracts thousands of visitors each year and has numerous activities to do there. While rafting down the Chilko River, Ron Thompson, a seasoned river guide with thirteen years of experience, had his raft high side on a rock. When the raft high sided and all but one of his guests fell out into the river. Due to the strong rapids five of the guests died. This is a tragedy that should not have happened on the river considering it is not nearly close enough to being one of the major rivers in Canada. The problem of where this happened on the river, Lava Canyon, is about how long the rapids run. The water level was approximately 2 feet lower than it typically ran. With water levels changing, rapids adjust throughout the river. When the raft hit a wake it turned on its side and hit the rock that forced people out of the raft. Some of the people were able to swim for safety, including Thompson, but sadly five drowned.

The Grand Canyon has plenty of volcanic rocks near the bottom and the top. ICR, Institute for Creative Research, has been involved in a project for years to date these volcanic rocks. this study has come a long way to show that many of the Grand Canyon strata could have formed rapidly, and that the erosion of the Canyon by the Colorado River has not been going on for millions of years.

Moraine Lake is a man made lake, located in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. The surface elevation is approximately 6181 feet above sea level. The lake is home of grizzly bears, ground squirrels, parrots and many other animals. The lake got its name from the “moraine”, a pile of glacier rocks and boulders that were formed by the Wenkchemna Glacier next to the lake. On Sunday morning, Mum and Dad decided to bring us to toboggan at Lake Mountain. We woke up at 7:45am in the morning, got changed and started our journey to Lake Mountain. As we were driving along Plenty Rd, we stopped at the Bundoora Hungry Jacks for breakfast. Although, the bacon & egg muffin was crispy, it didn't have the same taste as the normal muffin. Despite this, we continued our trip to Lake Mountain. Our adventure to Lake Mountain consisted of many winding roads and narrow roads. After two hours of driving, we reached Fernshaw and the fog was thickening but soon after, we reached Marysville. In Marysville, we hired toboggans and snow boots from the local store. After that, we made our way up the mountain and saw huge piles of snow along the side of the road. On the top of the mountain, we paid a car entry of $57 and parked the car in the car park.
