Lost to the vision of the general public, in a small town named Yvern, lives a certain individual. A man who strives for nothing more than to advance his scientific understanding of the world, a man who was blinded to the true experiences it could offer him by his own delusional thirst. But the man was nothing but another victim to the desire to progress. Having dedicated his life to research and the discovery of anything that could be useful to the rest of society, he became a pioneer of Alchemy. Alchemy was the recreation of a lost art from times where humans believed in more religious, spiritual things; however those thoughts had all but disappeared. The newfound creation were highly condensed “crystals” of certain compounds, that when processed by an elaborate, but usefully mobile, contraption dubbed an “Amplifier’s Arm” would release the condensed chemicals in the crystal and react with itself. It was used to create crystals that could condense and spread materials (such as clay), to spit fire or spread water, pressurized air, and the possibilities to find new crystals were near infinite. This man’s experiments varied greatly, without any concern for any one subject, he created and discovered a vast array of crystal types and methods to use them. He was commonly praised in the scientific community, although he remained silent mostly otherwise, only speaking to others in conditions where they would prove to be a help. And so his life continued to be isolated and
Social isolation is a social issue where people avoid contact with one society. They are commonly seen nowadays preventing people from interacting with another as well as creating reliable relations, abating any chances for one to realize their destiny. This negative spiral immensely affects the opportunity for people holding a feeling of love and community toward others.

Alchemy can be described in multiple ways. One way that alchemy is portrayed is as a “primitive precursor” for modern science and medicine practices (Bobory & Rampling, 2012). The practical and experimental side
1) What is alchemy? What processes were involved? Who performed it and why? Who were the famous alchemists of the medieval period?
The book I read is called The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. The Alchemist is about a boy from Spain, whose name is Santiago and is a shepherd. The book tells how he gets around countries, and how he deals with his problems and how he solves them. It shows how he follows his dreams, and who helps him along the way.
All stories consist of a similar structure of stages, ranging from using a couple to all twelve, that help the protagonist in their journey to better themselves or others. The sole concept of this is called a Hero’s Journey. Now in The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, the whole plot is based off of the hero’s journey. The protagonist, Santiago, goes through all twelve stages in his quest to reach his personal goal which ultimately makes The Alchemist a great example for the hero’s journey. In the book, Coelho introduces Santiago as a boy who is a shepard that was raised to be a priest. He is pleased being a sheep herder but is also fond of wanting to travel and dreams of finding a treasure. This starts off the “ordinary life” stage thus followed
Some may refer to The Alchemist as a best-selling novel written by Paulo Coelho which explains the ideas of having a dream, or Personal Legend, and going through obstacles to conquer it. The book starts off like any other, introducing and describing the main characters, in this case Santiago is the first to share the interest of peers reading the story. He is said to be a small town shepherd boy who will do anything for his flock of sheep. In the opening scene of the story, Santiago takes his flock to an abandoned church and lies down under a sycamore tree hoping to get some rest. He is soon woken up from a disturbing dream which foreshadows further into the story of his own Personal Legend. Later in the book, Santiago is faced with multiple tests to be successful in finding his treasure. “Remember that wherever your heart is, there you will find your treasure” (Coelho 15). Paulo continues to add characters in the book that help Santiago throughout his journey.
In addition to using words and phrases relating to nature, Barry utilizes diction that includes many different scientific terms that strengthen his point by showing him as directly connected to the scientific community. Throughout this passage, Barry uses words such as “theory”, “inquiry”, and “analyze” to increase his credibility on the subject with his audience. Had he not used scientific words such as these he would sound less official and his audience would be less inclined to listen and believe his point. In addition to scientific words, he uses different phrases that represent the scientific process. This includes mentioning crystals and how they “create form, structure, and direction”, as this phrase is scientific in nature and acts
Paulo Coelho has inspired many people around the world with his novel, The Alchemist. The main focus in the book was about a local shepherd boy named Santiago (who behind some slight encouragement from an old gypsy woman as well as an old man that believes himself to be a king) travels from his home country of Spain, to the pyramids located over in the Egyptian desert attempting to uncover the treasure which is buried in the pyramids. Coelho exercises various sorts of images discovered from the beginning to the end of the book such as a sheep, oil and a spoon, the wind, the desert, and lastly Fatima to convey the theme of a journey that is equally important to the goal.
The second half of the book begins Santiago after he has spent a month working for the crystal merchant. He offers to build a display case for some crystals. However, the merchant declines stating that people will knock over the stand. Santiago sees himself as an omen and tells the merchant that he should take advantage of the beginner's luck while he has it. Time passes and business has increased. One day Santiago overhears a tourist complaining about thirst after climbing the hill. Santiago then suggests that they sell tea out of the glasses. He sees this as an opportunity to make extra money from tea and glass sales. A year passes and business is good Santiago can afford plenty of sheep, but he realizes that instead of returning home he

There are many obstacles in everyday life, but none as detrimental to ones future as fear. Fear can cause people to not only avoid achieving their goals in life but it also forces them to think about it throughout every day. Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist shows that those who wallow in fear will never achieve their personal legend, and those who conquer fear will achieve anything they strive for. Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist is a commonly analyzed and criticized piece of literature. One of these articles is Rejendra Kumar Dash’s “Alchemy of the Soul: A Comparative Study of Hermann Hesse’s Siddhartha and Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist”. Dash’s article is a literary criticism of the different parts of the character’s journey in The Alchemist.
